Chapter 47: The Heavens Opened Their Eyes; Water Finally Flows in the River

Ye Mumu leaned against the railing for a while to recover before continuing to channel the river water with her mind.

This time, the water level dropped by about half a meter.

Her face turned pale, and her back was drenched in sweat, but she persevered.

After resting briefly, she picked up the vase and, feeling weak in her legs, made her way back to the villa.

Passing the well, she glanced at it – the water inside was still full.

She entered the villa’s living room and collapsed onto the sofa, too exhausted to keep her eyes open.

A slip of paper fell, unnoticed by her.

*

In Zhen Guan, two bright solar-powered lamps hung by the river.

Seeing the suddenly rising water, the Civilians rushed to the riverbank in a frenzy.

Those who had fallen asleep were jolted awake by their families.

Elderly people who couldn’t walk were carried on door panels to the riverbank.

Thousands knelt by the river, gazing at the crystal-clear water rippling gently under the moonlight.

The civilians collectively knelt – some silently wiping away tears, others wailing in heart-wrenching sobs.

They finally had water. The river had finally filled!

The heavens were merciful! The great drought was finally over.

They knelt by the river, crying in unison. “The heavens have opened their eyes; the Zhen Guan people won’t starve anymore!”

“Oh, my poor child, if only you had lived a few more days to eat rice porridge and see the river full of water!”

“Child’s father, the water has finally come. Can you see? The river has risen, our whole family can survive now; you can rest in peace!”

“Mom and Dad, I will take good care of my younger siblings. The water has risen; we can finally grow crops again. Waa…”

Zhan Chengyin watched the civilians kneeling and weeping by the riverbank.

He understood how difficult it had been for the people of Zhen Guan to survive this year.

They had endured water shortages, drought, famine, barbarian attacks…

From being too hungry to stand or walk, only able to lie in bed waiting for death.

…To now having water to drink and porridge to eat.

And now, seeing the river full of water, they had finally made it through.

Everyone was overcome with emotion, experiencing great joy and sorrow!

Some sprawled by the riverside to drink their fill.

Others were so overwhelmed they fainted from crying.

Zhan Chengyin quickly ordered soldiers to take the fainted civilians to the army medics.

*

The soldiers hadn’t bathed in half a year, their emotions echoing the civilians’ intensity.

Most had been on the battlefield, and were stained with the scent of blood. Now they could hardly contain their eagerness to jump into the river for a bath.

After waiting for the civilians to finish drinking, they jumped into the river.

Even the refined Mo Fan jumped in wearing only his underclothes, having servants help scrub him.

As they scrubbed, he complained about his own body odor.

Not having bathed for over half a year, he felt like he had lice and itched all over.

Tian Qin stood behind Zhan Chengyin, handing him a towel. “General, why don’t you wash up?”

Zhan Chengyin took the towel and asked Tian Qin, “No word from the god?”

“No.”

“What time is it now?”

“General, it’s the hour of Zi (11pm-1am)!”

At this hour, she was probably already resting.

Zhan Chengyin undid his belt, removed his robe and undergarments, revealing his muscular build with broad shoulders and narrow waist.

The water was crystal clear, seeming to have fish and shrimp swimming in it.

Zhan Chengyin cupped some water in his hands. Was this the river water from the god’s world?

It was so clear!

He very much wanted to meet the goddess in person.

He wanted to thank her directly.

But they were worlds apart – would there be a chance to meet in this lifetime?

*

The next day.

Ye Mumu slept until noon before waking up.

There were numerous missed calls on her phone.

Many were from unknown numbers, and two were from the textile factory’s sales manager.

The sales manager had sent a message: “Miss Ye, I’ve delivered the first batch of fabric. Mr. Yang at the warehouse has weighed it, totaling over 1,000 tons. Please settle the final payment when you see this.”

Ye Mumu called Uncle Yang.

He said the fabric had been weighed and the quantity was correct.

She settled the final payment with the sales manager.

The sales manager called her back excitedly, “Miss Ye, we’ve received the final payment. The waterproof canvas and denim fabrics are in urgent production. If you need any other fabrics, our factory can make them.”

“Do you have any inexpensive solid color fabrics you can sell me?”

“Sure, how much do you need?”

“Two hundred thousand yuan worth of goods. For solid colors, 70% should be suitable for men – navy blue, sky blue, black, military green… The remaining 30% should be subtle colors suitable for women – light pink, pale yellow, white, soft green… You can decide on the color ratios.”

“Alright, I’ll arrange for the factory to produce them as soon as possible.”

Ye Mumu paid a 1 million yuan deposit.

After receiving the deposit, the sales manager said it would take about three days to ship the goods.

Ye Mumu planned to move out of the villa for a while.

At the very least, to temporarily avoid her bloodsucking relatives finding her.

But she worried they might jump the fence and occupy the house if it was left empty.

After some thought, she called her former housekeeper, Auntie Liu.

Auntie Liu had returned to her rural hometown. After Ye Mumu stopped paying her, her son and daughter-in-law weren’t treating her well.

When working for the Ye family, Auntie Liu earned 15,000 yuan a month. She would send 12,000 home and keep 2,000 for herself.

But after returning home, she didn’t receive respect from her son and daughter-in-law, who verbally abused her daily.

Auntie Liu was surprised to receive Ye Mumu’s call. “Young Miss, how have you been?”

“I’m well, Auntie. My father’s relatives are being very troublesome, so I plan to live elsewhere for a while.”

“Someone needs to watch the house. Auntie Liu, would you be willing to come look after it?”

“I’ll raise your salary to 20,000 yuan a month!”

Auntie Liu had worked for the Ye family for many years and had practically watched Ye Mumu grow up.

Her parents’ deaths had hit Ye Mumu hard.

During that time, Ye Mumu was in a very bad state.

She wouldn’t leave her room, kept the heavy curtains drawn, wouldn’t eat or sleep. The servants watched her grow thinner and thinner, fearing she wouldn’t make it.

They took her to the hospital several times, where doctors diagnosed malnutrition and warned of serious health consequences if it continued.

The servants tried various ways to get her to eat more.

But Ye Mumu had shut herself off. When they urged her to eat, she became irritated and angrily dismissed all of them.

Including Auntie Liu.

She knew the servants cared about her, but at that time she was too depressed.

She just wanted to be alone and quiet.

Now that she needed to change residences, she needed someone trustworthy to watch over this villa.

Seeing Auntie Liu still hesitating, she added: “If you find it too lonely alone, you can invite the others back to keep you company. I’ll give everyone an extra 1,000 yuan in wages!”

Auntie Liu was overjoyed and quickly agreed, “Shall I contact them then?”

“Yes!”

After hanging up, Ye Mumu immediately contacted companies to install surveillance cameras and electric fencing.

She planned to install electric fencing all along the villa’s walls.

And surveillance cameras in every corner of the house.

She hoped to move out today, offering double the usual price for immediate service.

Hearing the doubled price, the workers drove over right away.

The surveillance installers arrived first, running wires and setting up cameras, including some solar-powered ones in the back garden.

With many workers, it was completed in two hours.

The feeds were connected to the security room at the entrance and the large screen in the top floor room.

The electric fence was installed quickly, finished in two and a half hours.

Ye Mumu paid them in full.

From the basement storeroom, she moved several large boxes containing antiques, property deeds left by her parents, jewelry, gold bars, jade…

Important contracts and IOUs were all placed in the car trunk.
