- I Became a Sugar Mama to an Ancient General during a Famine!
- Chapter 13 Part 2 - General Zhan's Life-Saving Grace
Zhao Youcai’s biggest mistake was letting the elderly, weak, women, and children block the carts.
He had let a mother, clutching her child, watch as her husband was cut down.
He had done all of this without consulting them, organizing it in secret and showing no regard for the lives of the elderly or children!
Now, the general’s mansion was willing to open the granaries and distribute food.
Yet Zhao Youcai was still excited.
Was he planning another raid on the mansion?
Sure enough, he blurted out, “Brother Wei, let’s organize another raid on the general’s mansion and go big this time!”
Suddenly, Wei Guang grabbed Zhao Youcai by the throat, his teeth clenched in anger, “You brought all these people here today.”
Zhao Youcai chuckled a few times, trying to pry Wei Guang’s hand off.
Wei Guang, tall and strong despite his recent weakness, was no match for Zhao Youcai.
“Brother Wei, don’t you want everyone to eat their fill?”
Wei Guang growled, “The general’s mansion has already opened the granaries. The people in the city can eat.”
“What’s the use of that? There’s famine everywhere outside. Don’t you want to sell the grain outside and make enough money to last several lifetimes?”
Wei Guang shoved Zhao Youcai against the wall, snarling, “The city is surrounded. Where could you sell the grain?”
Zhao Youcai didn’t respond, just smiled knowingly at Wei Guang.
Wei Guang’s eyes widened in realization.
Zhao Youcai had connections with the barbarian tribes. He had likely already colluded with them.
How dare he!
The Zhan family’s army had guarded the border for decades, losing over 200,000 men, with only 20,000 remaining.
All to protect the citizens of the city.
And now, Zhao Youcai was colluding with the barbarians!
Thinking of this, Wei Guang released Zhao Youcai, his gaze dark and cold.
“You’re a barbarian spy?”
The moment the words left his mouth, several men moved in, surrounding Wei Guang and Mute Sun.
Zhao Youcai grinned, showing his yellowed teeth, and straightened his collar.
“Brother Wei, what spy? I’m a businessman. I used to trade cloth for horses with the barbarians. Now, with drought everywhere, the barbarians’ lands are barren too. They also lack water and food,”
“If we can do business with them once, I guarantee you’ll have more money than you could spend in several lifetimes.”
“I see you and Mute Sun have some abilities. I don’t usually recruit ordinary people.”
“I’ll give you until dawn to decide. Now I’m off to line up for noodles.”
After saying this, Zhao Youcai left with his men.
After walking a few steps, he turned back with a cold gaze towards Wei Guang.
“Brother Wei, you know my biggest secret. If you don’t join, you won’t live to see tomorrow! Give me your answer before daybreak!”
Mute Sun fearfully tugged at Wei Guang’s clothes.
Wei Guang glared fiercely at Zhao Youcai, then angrily punched the wall.
Be a spy? Absolutely not!
Tonight, he would go to the general’s mansion and report Zhao Youcai and have him arrested.

When everyone returned to the general’s mansion, they had lost their appetite.
Looking at the delicious dishes, full of color, fragrance, and flavor, no one picked up their chopsticks for a long time.
Zhan Chengyin had Uncle Li divide one dish and one box of rice for each deputy general to take home to eat.
The deputy generals each took a portion.
Chen Wu helped bring back the food for Lin Dajun and Chen Kui.
There were two dishes left. He kept half of the braised fish, and let Tian Qin, Xu Ming, and Uncle Li share the rest.
He tasted a piece of the fish. It was very fragrant.
He had never tasted this flavor before. The tender fish meat melted on his tongue—a rare delicacy.
Noodles had started cooking in the back alley, with over twenty large cauldrons set up. Everyone was lining up.
He ate a few bites, then put down his chopsticks and went to the back alley.
The back alley was packed with people.
The moment he appeared, all the citizens knelt down.
With red eyes, they knelt and thanked Zhan Chengyin through tears.
“Thank you, General, for opening the granaries.”
“Thank you, General, for saving our lives!”
