- I Became a Sugar Mama to an Ancient General during a Famine!
- Chapter 12 Part 2 - A Life Worth Living
The Zhan family had inherited titles for generations, and his quality of life since childhood was no less than that of the nobles in the capital.
But seeing these dishes, he felt that his life was nothing special in comparison.
Any single dish was something that not only the cooks in the general’s mansion but even the imperial chefs might not fully recognize all the ingredients for.
Zhan Chengyin said, “Leave a portion each for deputy general Lin and deputy general Chen Kui, the rest we’ll eat together.”
Uncle Li heard this and took out two dishes, leaving two bowls of rice!
Everyone was about to start eating with their bowls and chopsticks when~
Suddenly, there was a knock at the main door.
“General, the supplies have been robbed by the commoners”
Abruptly, Zhan Chengyin put down his chopsticks and stood up.
The eight soldiers all put down their bowls and chopsticks and hurried to the door with the general.
The young soldier who came was about fifteen years old, still with a child’s face. His arm was injured, with blood seeping through.
He stuttered, “Hundreds of commoners have intercepted the supplies at the end of the alley. Deputy General Lin can’t move forward, Deputy General Chen Kui is covering the rear, and many soldiers have been injured.”
Hearing this, Zhan Chengyin quickly put on his armor, armed himself, and ordered Wu Erlang, “Go to the back alley of the general’s mansion, set up steel barrels, boil water and make porridge.”
“No, there’s no time to make porridge! Cook noodles, make instant noodles.”
Wu Erlang heard the order, “Yes.”
Everyone else went to support Lin Dajun and Chen Kui.
*
Lin Dajun’s group was blocked by women, children, and the elderly at the front.
They were all women, with families in tow, carrying dying elderly and children, all kneeling on the road.
Behind them were dense crowds of commoners, wielding hoes and kitchen knives.
The people in front applied pressure, all kneeling and crying, begging. “Deputy General, please save my child. Just give us something to eat and we can live. I beg you.”
The people behind waved their knives, looking fierce and evil: “Today, either you walk over our corpses, or you leave the food behind and you can go!”
Chen Kui had a violent temper. He immediately drew his large sword and slashed at the refugees.
“I’ve guarded the border for many years, killed countless barbarians. You few powerless little thieves dare to threaten me?”
“Let me tell you, if you delay military affairs, I’ll kill your entire families!”
The refugees had all gone mad with hunger.
Deputy General Chen Kui’s threats didn’t faze them at all.
They only knew that if they couldn’t get supplies today, their entire families would starve to death.
Better for one person to die than to watch their whole family starve to death!
Someone at the back shouted, “Grab it! If we can’t get food today, we’ll die anyway. It’s worth it to die with a full stomach!”
“My family is about to starve to death. We must get food today.”
“The general’s mansion clearly has food. Why are they hoarding it? How can they watch the people die?”
“There are only about a hundred of them. Everyone, follow me, let’s grab it together!”
The commoners swarmed forward.
The weak and sick at the front saw cabbage leaves peeking out from under the black cloth and became restless.
As the people at the back took action, those at the front crawled under the carts and lifted the black cloth.
Instantly, an entire large basket of cabbage was exposed.
The commoners’ eyes reddened at this sight, and they all swarmed forward.
The scene became chaotic.
Lin Dajun, Chen Kui, and the remaining soldiers all drew their weapons and began fighting with the commoners.
When Zhan Chengyin arrived at the small alley, the ground was already covered with the bodies of several commoners, and a few scattered soldier corpses.
Blood flowed to their feet.
Despite this, more and more refugees kept joining in. Because they had seen the four carts of supplies, as well as the rice and flour under the baskets.
One basket had been pulled out, spilling rice all over the ground, soaking in the bright red blood.
A dead commoner had his mouth stuffed full of cabbage leaves. He hadn’t had time to swallow before he died!
