- Chapter 93 - Missing Person Notice
Chen Shu put down his chopsticks. He turned his head and saw that Tang Bin had returned to behind the stall, deep-frying tofu for other customers. The hot oil made a sizzling sound, Chen Shu withdrew his gaze. The streetlights had come on, perfectly illuminating the area. It looked pale and overly bright.
“Look at that,” Wang Zheng nudged Chen Shu with his elbow and pointed to the wall at the entrance of Tang Bin’s house.
There was a missing person notice, white paper, black text. It was pasted on the gray, weathered wall. Chen Shu looked closely and saw that it clearly read.
My wife Qi Dan, 28 years old, around 1.65 meters tall, slim build, with long hair. She went missing on February 4th and has not returned since. On that day, she was wearing a red long down jacket, a pair of leather boots, and carrying an ordinary cloth bag.
If anyone has seen her, please contact Tang Bin at: 151XXXXXXXX.
Attached to the notice was a photo. It was of a young woman with a delicate face. Even though it was a small photo, her beauty was still undeniable.
“Have you seen my daughter-in-law?” Suddenly, a hoarse voice spoke. Chen Shu had been focused on the notice and didn’t realize when a woman in her fifties had stood beside them. Su Xiaoxiao was startled.
“Oh, this is Tang Bin’s mother, Qi Dan’s mother-in-law,” Wang Zheng introduced Chen Shu. “After her daughter-in-law went missing, she was deeply affected and seems to have developed some mental health issues. She keeps asking people if they’ve seen her daughter-in-law.”
“Is it really that serious?” Chen Shu asked.
“Yes,” Wang Zheng nodded, his brow furrowing as he continued, “According to Tang Bin, his wife was three months pregnant when she went missing. This is a huge blow to the old lady. You can imagine, after finally expecting a grandchild, and then… this. Who could handle that?”
Su Xiaoxiao looked at the woman with sympathy.
“Sorry, sorry,” Tang Bin hurried over. He pointed to his head and said, “My mom’s not in great mental shape. Sorry if she scared you. Please don’t mind.”
“Come on, mom, it’s cold outside, let me help you inside. Captain Wang, you all take your time eating.” With that, Tang Bin helped the old woman into the yard.
“Ah, it’s really sad. I hope we can catch the killer,” Wang Zheng shook his head helplessly, then pulled out a disposable pair of chopsticks, tapped them on the table, and grabbed a piece of stinky tofu to put in his mouth.
As he chewed, he said, “Hey, Chen Shu, why are you just standing there? Haven’t had dinner yet? Try it.”
Oil splashed out from the tofu, seeping through the gaps in Wang Zheng’s teeth. The stench spread throughout the whole street. Chen Shu looked down at the stinky tofu on his plate.
To be honest, while it was stinky, it was quite authentic, garnished with scallions, garlic, and various seasonings. The tofu was cut in a square shape with a slit in the middle, stuffed with some red, small spicy fish.
“Wow, wow.” Su Xiaoxiao rubbed her hands together excitedly. As a big star, she was used to luxurious foods, but this street food made her extra eager. She immediately grabbed a piece and shoved it into her mouth.
“Sis,” suddenly, Chen Shu called out.
“What’s up, brother?” Su Xiaoxiao asked.
Chen Shu looked into her eyes and said, “This stinky tofu is too oily, and it’s a bit spicy. If you eat too much, you might get a heat rash. What if you break out in pimples? That wouldn’t look good for the next episode shoot.”
“Don’t eat.”
