- Chapter 88 - I Love Telling the Truth
Everyone turned around, the camera shifted again. A row of police cars came into view, one, two, three, four, five. There were five in total, lined up front to back. The flashing police lights pulsed like the beating hearts of everyone present.
Thump, thump. Silent, yet deafening.
“Police cars! Behind Captain Wang, it’s not just Su Xiaoxiao, but also the parked police cars on the highway!”
“Did Chen Shu hide the body inside the police car while he and his sister were being driven home?”
“So Su Xiaoxiao was lying too! They came back together, she must have known what Chen Shu was doing! These siblings were in on it the whole time. That crying act from Su Xiaoxiao just now? Oscar-worthy!”
“No way, I still can’t believe it. The road back was being filmed with a drone, but they were escorted by officers. Wouldn’t they have noticed something that big?”
“Maybe Su Xiaoxiao distracted the officer driving while Chen Shu was busy hiding the body!”
“And the smell? They drove all that way, and no one noticed anything?”
Even though the show had moved on to the second segment, where Chen Shu was reviewing his entire scheme. The moment he pointed at the police car, everyone was still in disbelief!
“So…” Wang Zheng’s face twitched as he looked at Chen Shu. “So, on the way back, you hid the dismembered body inside the car?”
Chen Shu nodded. “Yeah, that’s right.”
Wang Zheng turned to Su Xiaoxiao. “Is that true?”
Su Xiaoxiao didn’t answer, She just kept her innocent expression, “(。?_?。)” Because she had no idea! That day, on the way home, she sat in the backseat with her brother. She didn’t notice him doing anything suspicious.
“Captain Wang, since you’ve already admitted defeat, and it’s review time, hurry up and find the body so you can sleep peacefully tonight,” Chen Shu urged.
Wang Zheng swallowed hard and asked, “Which police car?”
Chen Shu thought for a moment, then shook his head. “I forgot.”
Wang Zheng turned to Su Xiaoxiao. “Do you remember?”
Su Xiaoxiao pouted. “I don’t know anything…”
“Then let’s search them all,” Su Haoran said, putting on gloves and leading the officers onto the highway. Immediately, they began searching all five police cars!
In the conference room, Zhang Sheng watched the live stream, twisted open a bottle of water, and gulped down half of it.
“Director Zhang, do you believe the body was hidden in a police car?” Zhang Bingbing asked.
“At this point, even our production team admitted defeat. Why would he keep lying to us?” Zhang Sheng replied. “That day, the officers drove the siblings back. Because they were in a moving vehicle, the live stream used drone footage, so we never got a true first-person perspective. What a shame.”
Zhang Bingbing added, “If this is true, Su Xiaoxiao’s acting skills deserve a legendary status. She played along with Chen Shu so well. When Captain Wang asked Chen Shu to take off his shirt, the way she cried, it was both despairing and relieved at the same time.”
“Of course! The actors I pick all have real talent,” Zhang Sheng boasted, then quickly added, “Except for Liang Wei, of course.”
About ten minutes later, the voices of the officers echoed through the live stream, “Captain Wang, I didn’t find a body in the car.”
“Me neither.”
“I practically dismantled the undercarriage, nothing.”
“Dismantled? I straight-up emptied the fuel tank!”
Hearing that, Zhang Sheng was stunned. He looked at Chen Shu standing in the courtyard, confused. “Wait, what is this? He’s already reviewing the case, why is he still lying?”
At the same time, the live stream chat went wild.
“I knew it! There’s no way he hid the body in the police car. The only possible places are the trunk, under the seats, or in the fuel tank.”
“But why would he keep messing with us? The investigation team already gave up, and he pulled off the perfect crime. What’s the point of misleading everyone now?”
“Chen Shu: I just love telling little lies.”
At that moment, after hearing the officers’ reports, Wang Zheng looked at Chen Shu, speechless. “Chen Shu, we already gave in. Do you really have to keep playing with us?”
Qin Min sighed. “Come on, just tell us the truth.”
Even Su Xiaoxiao spoke up. “Brother, the crime segment is over. Are you too deep in character to snap out of it? I know the body isn’t in the police car because I was with you the whole time. You sat right next to me, and you never made a move.”
Chen Shu curled his lips into a smile but didn’t answer. Instead, he started walking toward the highway. The camera followed his steps, moving in closer.
“Are you sure your brother sat next to you the whole ride back?” Qin Min asked, leaning toward Su Xiaoxiao.
Su Xiaoxiao nodded. “I love telling the truth.”
Qin Min asked, “Then what is he doing? They checked five police cars, trunks, fuel tanks, under the seats, even the undercarriages. Still nothing.”
Su Xiaoxiao shook her head. “After all this time with him, honestly, I still can’t read him.”
Qin Min joked, “At this point, I’d sooner believe he cooked the body and fed it to you. Maybe in soup, steamed buns, or… Liu Liang’s braised rice?”
Su Xiaoxiao, “How rude!”
Knock, knock. Just then, a tapping sound came from one of the cars. Everyone looked over to see Chen Shu standing beside the first police car.
“Officer Wang, are you sure you searched every inch of this car?” Chen Shu asked.
Wang Zheng nodded. “Absolutely.”
Chen Shu asked again, “Who drove this car today?”
“Qin Min,” Wang Zheng replied. Then, suddenly, his mouth twitched as he added, “I rode in this car too. Wait, are you saying the body was in this car?”
Chen Shu glanced through the car window. “It should be this one.”
With that, he opened the back door. He bent forward, half his body disappearing into the backseat. He ran his hands along the bottom of the seat, searching.
“Don’t bother, we already checked under the seats,” Qin Min called out.
“Found it!” Suddenly, Chen Shu spoke.
In an instant, everyone rushed over. They watched as his right hand grasped a silver… zipper?!
It was attached to the gray seat cover of the backseat. The cover, long unwashed, emitted a stale, musty odor. As Chen Shu slowly pulled the zipper open, a cloud of dust burst into the air. The camera lens, moving in close, was momentarily covered in a gray haze.
A long moment passed, the dust settled, and then—zzzt! With one swift motion, Chen Shu tore off the entire gray seat cover revealing what lay beneath.
