- Chapter 76 - The Test
Under the director’s control, the camera in the interrogation room shifted. Through the iron door, the figure in the hallway was illuminated. Chen Shu’s face instantly appeared on the livestream.
“Wait, why is he here?”
“I just heard an officer say he came voluntarily to verify the handwriting?”
“What the hell? I’m so confused. I understood why he handed over the diary since he couldn’t hide it, but now, after Su Xiaoxiao took the blame for him out of sibling loyalty, why is he showing up?”
“Could it be that he’s about to pull off the perfect crime, and the showrunners couldn’t stand it, so they pressured him into coming?”
“Damn, that actually makes sense. The production team must have forced him. Think about it, Chen Shu already signed the contract, so he has to follow their orders.”
“Fine, fine, even if the production team had to do this to wrap things up, in my mind, Chen Shu has already executed the perfect crime.”
For a moment, his sudden arrival sent netizens into a frenzy of speculation. In the end, they unanimously agreed: the director must have pressured him. It was a simple deduction.
In the previous episode, Chen Shu’s involvement was unexpected, and he hadn’t signed a contract. But in this one, he was a signed participant. And now, with a perfect crime about to unfold, would the director really just sit back and let it happen?
The answer was definitely not!
But… Inside the director’s room, Zhang Sheng’s lips twitched. “The hell? I didn’t pressure him, did I? And there’s no clause in my contract with him that requires this. So why did he voluntarily ask for a handwriting verification?”
Zhang Sheng was baffled. Then, after a brief pause, he smacked his forehead and suddenly understood, “I got it. Chen Shu is being considerate! He knows that if he pulls off a perfect crime, the production team will have a hard time explaining things to higher-ups, so he’s doing me a favor by voluntarily coming for verification.”
“Yeah, that must be it.”
“Chen Shu, oh, Chen Shu, you’re really looking out for me! Hahaha!”
The livestream continued. Wang Zheng stepped out of the interrogation room, looking at Chen Shu in the hallway. “What are you doing here, Chen Shu? Your sister already confessed to everything. Why are you stirring things up?”
“I understand you have a strong sibling bond and don’t want to accept the truth, but unfortunately, the facts are right in front of us. Your sister has already confessed,” Qin Min added.
“No, you’re wrong,” Chen Shu shook his head. “Confessing doesn’t mean she’s actually guilty.”
The trio exchanged glances. Wang Zheng frowned. “What do you mean? Are you just here to cause trouble?”
Chen Shu pulled out three notebooks from his bag. “Officer Wang, these are my sister’s notebooks. They contain her handwriting. I want you to compare them to the diary and conduct a forensic analysis to see if they match.”
“Also, one of these belongs to my father. I’d like you to verify that handwriting as well. And, to avoid any suspicion, the last one is mine. You’re welcome to check that too.”
“The Liang Wei murder case isn’t as simple as it seems. I hope you’ll take a second look.” He handed the notebooks to Wang Zheng, his gaze firm.
“And one more thing,” he suddenly added, turning toward the interrogation room, where Su Xiaoxiao sat, her eyes red from crying. “In this case, my sister is the one who’s been wronged the most. You’ve completely misunderstood her. The only reason she confessed… was because of family.”
“He’s exposing himself! Chen Shu is about to expose himself!”
“Of course it’s because of family.”
“This is the director’s power, forcing him to confess.”
“Enough,” Wang Zheng waved him off. “We don’t judge cases based on emotions. As her brother, of course you’d see it that way.” He took the notebooks. “Fine, to clear things up for you, wait here. I’ll have the forensic team analyze the handwriting right away.”
Chen Shu nodded. “Thank you, Officer Wang.”
After Wang Zheng left, Qin Min stepped forward and patted Chen Shu’s shoulder. “I get how you feel, man. Your sister seems sweet and obedient, but… people’s hearts aren’t always what they seem.”
Chen Shu didn’t respond, just shook his head. He turned back to the interrogation room. For a moment, his eyes met Su Xiaoxiao’s. Under the dim light, their gazes locked, each glimmering faintly. Then, Chen Shu smiled.
It was a smile Su Xiaoxiao had seen before. The same confident smile he had after killing Liu Liang, when he promised her he’d clear her name and keep her safe.
Su Xiaoxiao was utterly confused. What does this mean? The diary was his, after all. She had already taken the blame for him. Why was he verifying the handwriting? If he wanted to confess, why didn’t he do it earlier? Why wait until she got arrested?
Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t figure it out. Her brother wasn’t the type to do something unnecessary. He must have a reason for this. She couldn’t see through his thoughts, just like she hadn’t been able to understand his emotions when he took her to Mount Jinfo back then.
Impossible to guess his true intentions.
“Chen Shu, wait in the office,” Qin Min called out. “Handwriting verification takes time. If we’re lucky, we’ll have results by tomorrow.”
“Alright.” Chen Shu withdrew his gaze.
In the office, he leaned back in his chair. Staring at the dim glow of the fluorescent light. Then, he murmured softly, “After all this time, my sister finally proved she’s trustworthy. She passed the test… She’ll be a good partner in the future.”
The next day, April 30, 9 AM.
Tap tap tap. Hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway. An officer rushed forward, gripping a folder.
“It’s here! The results are out!”
“The city police worked fast. Normally, handwriting verification takes days.”
“Technology has improved a lot. If Chen Shu provided clear samples, half a day is more than enough.”
“Ugh, the director really forced Chen Shu into confessing.”
“Whatever, this episode was worth it. We got to see Chen Shu’s brilliant crime techniques. Him getting caught is just so the show can keep airing.”
In the director’s room, Zhang Sheng hadn’t gone home all night. Rubbing his hands excitedly, he grinned. “Thank you, Chen Shu, for doing me this favor. I owe you big time!”
At the hotel, Liang Wei hadn’t slept either. “Holy shit, the director did something right for once. Forcing Chen Shu to confess… finally, I’m not the clown anymore!”
“Woohoo!”
Meanwhile in the interrogation room, Wang Zheng and the others had been waiting in the office since early morning.
“Captain Wang! Captain Wang!” The officer rushed closer, waving the document. “After an all-night forensic analysis, we finally have the results!”
“The handwriting in the diary is…”
