- Chapter 60 - Full of Flaws, Where’s That Cleverness When Killing?
At this moment, the audience was beyond excited. This was the first direct confrontation between the criminal and the investigation team.
“Music team, set the mood.”
“Camera crew, focus on Zeng Zhiwei and Su Haoran, shoot from a circling angle.”
“Lighting team, adjust the lights, one bright, one dark, to frame them both.”
As Zhang Sheng gave his instructions, each team sprang into action.
In the main live broadcast room, Zeng Zhiwei and Su Haoran stood face to face, like a beast lurking in the night and a hunter with a gun, locked in a psychological battle.
It seemed calm on the surface, but with the atmosphere heightened, the audience could feel the intense tension in the air.
“I’m so excited! I really want to see how Zeng Zhiwei handles the interrogation!”
“Zeng Zhiwei is incredibly skilled. He knows that Chen Shu and his sister discovered he wasn’t home last night, so he must have prepared in advance.”
“In the last episode, Chen Shu handled the interrogation so smoothly that even Captain Wang was left speechless. Now, Zeng Zhiwei will surely perform even better.”
“Exactly! After all, Liang isn’t as good as Chen, but Chen isn’t as good as Zeng!”
In the director’s room, Zhang Sheng watched the flood of comments. He rubbed his hands together, full of anticipation. There were still thirteen days left until the show’s deadline.
Based on Zeng Zhiwei’s previous displays of skill, he was certain to hold out until the very last moment, ensuring maximum viewership. Right now, he was only facing an interrogation. For him, this was nothing.
After all, from how he handled killing Liang Wei, it was clear that Zeng Zhiwei was an incredibly intelligent and meticulous criminal. Trying to catch him in a lie through simple questioning was nothing but a fantasy.
Unless the investigation team found solid, irrefutable evidence. But that wasn’t something that could be done in just a day or two!
For now, the entire online audience, as well as the show’s staff, had complete confidence in Zeng Zhiwei. Everyone wanted to witness how he would talk his way out of this!
At the scene, once Su Haoran confirmed that Zeng Zhiwei hadn’t been home last night, he immediately questioned him, “Uncle Zeng, your daughter just said you weren’t home early this morning.”
“What were you doing?”
Zeng Zhiwei replied, “Oh, I like fishing. I don’t have time during the day, so I went night fishing.”
Su Haoran, “Where did you go fishing?”
Zeng Zhiwei, “At the river in the western suburbs.”
“Oh,” Su Haoran nodded. “Earlier, Captain Wang questioned your son, and he said that when you came home this morning, you were completely drenched. What’s up with that? Were you fishing, or did you jump in the river to catch fish?”
Hearing this, Zeng Zhiwei’s mouth twitched. He quickly said, “Ah, Officer, I slipped while pulling in a fish. Lost my balance and fell in. Got soaked, and the fish got away too.”
Su Haoran chuckled. “That must’ve been a big fish. Uncle Zeng, what brand of fishing rod were you using? It would be really strong if it pulled you into the river without breaking.”
“Just some no-name brand, I forgot the name,” Zeng Zhiwei said.
“Show it to me. I’ve been thinking about getting a fishing rod, and if a cheap one is this sturdy, I could save some money.”
“Uh…” Zeng Zhiwei hesitated. “Sorry, Officer, I lost it this morning on my way back. I was in a rush to take Su Xiaoxiao to school.”
“And the fish you caught?” Su Haoran pressed.
“Ah,” Zeng Zhiwei laughed awkwardly. “You’ll probably laugh, but maybe I made too much noise falling in, scared all the fish away. I didn’t catch a single one.”
“Oh? A complete failure?”
Zeng Zhiwei nodded. “Yeah.”
Then, Su Haoran immediately followed up, “Uncle Zeng, what time did you fall into the river?”
Zeng Zhiwei thought for a moment. “Around four in the morning, I think. I don’t remember exactly.”
Su Haoran followed, “So you fell in at 4 AM, but you only got home at 7 AM. That means you were soaking wet for a full three hours. Why didn’t you just go home and change? The western suburb river isn’t that far from your house, is it?”
Hearing this, Zeng Zhiwei seemed to falter. Despite the cool weather, beads of sweat formed on his forehead. The audience watching the live stream was puzzled.
“What’s going on? Zeng Zhiwei looks like he’s about to be exposed?”
“His alibi is garbage. He says he went fishing last night, but he lost his rod and caught nothing? I don’t believe that.”
“Did he not prepare for this? His murder skills were top-notch, but he seems completely out of his depth handling Su Haoran’s questioning.”
“Yeah, he feels like a totally different person compared to the cold, calculated killer we saw before.”
“But the truth is, he really did commit the murder!”
The livestream was filled with curiosity. Zeng Zhiwei’s execution of Liang Wei had been so flawless that people had praised him as a criminal genius. But now, with just a few simple questions from Su Haoran, he was falling apart.
“Officer, I swear, I really went fishing last night. You might not believe it, but that’s the truth.” Zeng Zhiwei was running out of options, but he stubbornly stuck to his story.
Su Haoran watched him closely, then smiled and said, “Alright, Uncle Zeng, I believe you.”
“But… I have one last question.”
At these words, Zeng Zhiwei swallowed hard. His sweaty hands clenched into fists. “Go ahead, Officer.”
Su Haoran glanced at Su Xiaoxiao, then asked, “Uncle Zeng, you know that yesterday, Liang Wei kidnapped your daughter and threatened to kill her. At a time like this, when you knew he hadn’t been caught yet, as a father, how did you have the peace of mind to go fishing?”
This question was like a dagger. It tore through all of Zeng Zhiwei’s lies.
“Damn! Su Haoran is sharp!”
“Honestly, if Zeng Zhiwei just kept insisting that he was fishing, Su Haoran wouldn’t have been able to do anything. But this question completely shattered his story.”
“Yeah, as a father, if you knew someone wanted to kill your daughter, you wouldn’t leave her alone to go fishing.”
“Wait, what’s happening? Wasn’t Zeng Zhiwei supposed to be really smart? Why is he so bad at lying?”
“Feels like someone else planned the crime for him!”
