- Chapter 59 - My Dad Went Out Last Night
April 26. Thirteen days until the program ends. 8:30 PM.
Clang. The iron door of the interrogation room slammed shut. Wang Zheng and Qin Min sat in their chairs, staring at Chen Shu, who was seated across from them.
This scene felt oddly familiar.
“Chen Shu, tell us exactly how you killed Liang Wei.”
“Officer Wang, I really don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t even know where Liang Wei is, so how could I have killed him? And why would I kill him? Do I hold a grudge against him?”
Chen Shu looked exasperated. Even with handcuffs on, he still struggled.
Bang! Bang!
Wang Zheng slapped the table. “Chen Shu, cooperate with us!”
“Officer Wang, am I not cooperating?” Chen Shu was both angry and anxious, his tone filled with helplessness. He looked so pitiful.
“Wang, you’ve really misunderstood Chen Shu. Just let him go. He looks like he’s about to cry from injustice.”
“Last episode, Chen Shu was so arrogant. Now, he looks completely defeated. Hahaha.”
“Chen is nothing compared to Zeng, just a pawn to take the fall!”
“Do you think this attitude looks cooperative?” Wang Zheng scolded. “Chen Shu, last time, you and your sister killed Liu Liang. We couldn’t find any evidence, and now you have the guts to kill again? What, did Liu Liang’s father have something on you two, so you had to silence him?”
“Heh,” Chen Shu let out a bitter laugh. “Officer Wang, your interrogation is pure speculation. First, my sister and I have never committed a crime. Second, we have no reason to kill Liang Wei.”
“Alright,” Wang Zheng said in a deep voice. “Then answer this, why did Liang Wei receive a call from you before he died? What were you calling him for?”
Chen Shu shook his head. “I didn’t call him. I was asleep by 11 PM last night. I didn’t go anywhere.”
“Can anyone vouch for you?” Wang Zheng asked.
“My sister,” Chen Shu replied.
“Your sister? That’s a joke. She can’t be considered a credible witness.” Wang Zheng scoffed. “By your logic, you went to sleep at 11 PM, and then at 2:30 AM, your phone magically called Liang Wei on its own?”
“You think your phone is some kind of AI assistant?”
Chen Shu thought for a moment before saying, “Officer Wang, isn’t it possible that my sister was sleeping in my room last night while I slept in the living room, and someone secretly took my phone at 2:30 AM to call Liang Wei?”
“Why was your sister sleeping in your room?” Wang Zheng frowned, staring at Chen Shu with a strange expression.
“Because…” Chen Shu hesitated, struggling to find the words. “Ugh, this is kind of embarrassing to say. My sister and I noticed that my dad has been acting weird. He often sneaks into her room in the middle of the night. She was scared, so she’s been sleeping in my room these past few nights.”
Hearing this, Wang Zheng glanced at Qin Min. “Wang, if what he says is true, then his father likely has a daughter complex. It’s a psychological disorder that does exist,” Qin Min responded.
Wang Zheng turned back to Chen Shu. “So you’re saying that while you were asleep in the living room, someone took your phone to contact Liang Wei? And who do you think that person was?”
“I don’t know,” Chen Shu shook his head in confusion. Then, as if remembering something, he suddenly leaned forward and said, “Oh, Officer Wang, my sister and I woke up this morning and realized my dad wasn’t home. He only returned at 7 AM, completely soaked, like he had fallen into the water.”
Upon hearing this, Qin Min and Wang Zheng exchanged glances. Zeng Zhiwei? Completely soaked?
“Are you sure about this?” Wang Zheng asked.
“Yes,” Chen Shu nodded. “Officer Wang, I hope you investigate properly instead of pinning every murder on me. I’m truly innocent.”
“Enough, stop talking. Whether you’re innocent or not, we’ll find out ourselves,” Wang Zheng snapped. Then he turned to Qin Min. “Send Chen Shu’s statement to Haoran. Tell him to interrogate Zeng Zhiwei.”
“Got it!” Qin Min pushed open the door and left.
“Oh damn, is Zeng Zhiwei about to be exposed?”
“Are you kidding? You think he hasn’t considered all of this?”
“Zeng Zhiwei covers his tracks flawlessly. There’s no way he’d make such a stupid mistake. With his intelligence, he must have already planned a way to deal with this.”
“Exactly! Since he knows Chen Shu and his sister noticed his absence, he must have set up a series of countermeasures to deceive the investigation team. His previous murders were impressive, I can’t wait to see what he does next!”
As Qin Min left, the iron door slowly closed again. The light from outside was reduced to a thin line before fading completely. Chen Shu narrowed his eyes and leaned against the cold iron chair.
Since the director had stripped him of the opportunity to commit crimes, then he’d just take on the role of director himself! He would decide when this ended. He would decide when Zeng Zhiwei gets caught.
Framing someone? Who was the hunter, and who was the prey, that was yet to be determined!
At Chen Shu’s house, Zeng Zhiwei had just returned home when he saw a police car parked outside. His breathing quickened, and he struggled to suppress his anxiety. “Officers, is there a problem?”
“Your son is a suspect in a murder case. He has been taken to the station. I’m here to ask you some questions,” Su Haoran said, looking at the father and daughter.
“What?” Su Xiaoxiao gasped. “That’s impossible! My brother hasn’t gone anywhere these past few days, how could he have killed someone?”
“Yeah, my son was home all day. As for the night…” Zeng Zhiwei paused, trying to steer the conversation. “He wasn’t out. My son isn’t a murderer.”
“Calm down,” Su Haoran raised a hand to stop them. “Around 2 AM last night, what were the three of you doing?”
“At 2 AM? Sleeping, of course,” Su Xiaoxiao answered. “My brother was asleep too.”
“How can you be sure?” Su Haoran asked.
“My brother was sleeping in the living room. Around… I think 2:40 AM, I got up to use the bathroom and saw him lying on the sofa. He didn’t go anywhere,” Su Xiaoxiao replied.
“Alright,” Su Haoran remained unconvinced. These siblings were not to be trusted, it was possible they were covering for each other. “What about you, sir? Were you home at that time?”
“I…” Zeng Zhiwei raised his hand and rubbed his nose. “Yes, I was home.”
“Dad, you didn’t come home until this morning,” Su Xiaoxiao looked at him in confusion.
Su Haoran’s eyes sharpened. “Sir?”
“Oh, oh,” Zeng Zhiwei let out an awkward laugh and smacked his forehead. “Silly me, I must’ve mixed up the time. Right, I went out for something last night.”
Su Haoran stared at him. “We heard that when you came back, you were soaking wet. What exactly were you doing?”
