- Chapter 57 - Chen Shu Is Innocent
April 26th. Evening, 6:50 PM.
Chen Shu was busy in the kitchen, as for Zeng Zhiwei, he had gone to pick up Su Xiaoxiao. At the moment, he was the only one in the house.
“It looks like it’s going to rain again,” Chen Shu muttered, glancing through the glass window at the gloomy sky outside.
Suddenly, in his line of sight, two police cars sped toward his house and screeched to a stop on the road outside. Next, Wang Zheng and his team, along with several other officers, stepped out and headed straight for the building.
“They’re here, they’re here! They’ve come to arrest Zeng Zhiwei!”
“What? Did they already identify the murderer?”
“Didn’t you guys hear what Captain Wang said earlier? The killer contacted Liang Wei by phone. With modern technology, they just need to check Liang Wei’s call records to find out who he talked to!”
“Looks like Zeng Zhiwei made a fatal mistake.”
“Come on, pulling off a murder like this is already impressive. Perfect crimes are nearly impossible, so making a mistake is understandable.”
Ding-dong. The doorbell rang. Chen Shu wiped his hands, walked out of the kitchen, and opened the door. “Hey, Officer Wang, what brings you here?”
“Oh, we were passing by and decided to stop in,” Wang Zheng said.
“Come on in then,” Chen Shu invited them inside.
After Wang Zheng sat on the couch, he asked, “Xiao Shu, how have you been lately? You didn’t get hurt when you stopped Liang Wei, did you?”
“I’m fine,” Chen Shu replied, bringing over three cups of hot water. “Just a twisted waist. I’ve been resting at home and haven’t gone anywhere.”
“Are you sure you haven’t been anywhere?” Wang Zheng asked.
“Well… this morning, I took my sister to school. I didn’t want her going alone, what if she got kidnapped again?” Chen Shu sighed. “Liu Liang’s father is so stubborn. You already told him my sister didn’t kill Liu Liang, but he still won’t leave us alone. Oh, right, Officer Wang, have you found him yet? You need to catch him soon, or my family will never have peace!”
“He’s dead.” Wang Zheng said it outright.
“Huh?” Chen Shu was shocked. “He’s dead? When? Who killed him?”
Frowning, he added, “Officer Wang, don’t tell me you think I did it? Come on, you already accused me once… again?”
“Calm down,” Wang Zheng raised his hand to stop him. “We already have a preliminary judgment about the case and the murderer. You don’t need to explain yourself, we already have a clear picture. We’re just here to talk.”
“What? They just said it has nothing to do with Chen Shu. What does Captain Wang mean by this?”
“Yeah, weren’t they checking Liang Wei’s call records?”
“Maybe they haven’t retrieved them yet and are just questioning him first.”
Viewers were feeling bad for Chen Shu. He was just a bystander in all of this. Why were they bothering him again? Zeng Zhiwei was obviously the murderer!
“Fine, I get why you’re here. From your perspective, Liang Wei had a grudge against my sister and me, so his death would naturally seem connected to us.”
“But I believe in you guys, you’ll clear my name. Officer Wang, do you have any other questions?” Chen Shu took a deep breath, calming himself.
Wang Zheng reached out his hand. “Hand over your phone.”
Chen Shu was confused. “Why?”
“Before Liang Wei died, he was on a call with the murderer,” Wang Zheng explained. “If you want to prove your innocence, show us your call records.”
“Alright,” Chen Shu handed over his phone.
Wang Zheng opened the call log and scrolled through it. Suddenly, he smirked. “Chen Shu, you must have known we’d come for you. So, you deleted the call records in advance. But our tech department can recover them!”
Chen Shu froze. “Officer Wang, what are you implying?”
“Still playing dumb?” Wang Zheng stood up and pointed at him. “Last night, you called Liang Wei. You killed him. Don’t think we don’t know. Even if you took Liang Wei’s phone, we can still pull his call logs.”
“The last number he answered before he died was yours, Chen Shu! You were the one who contacted him!”
At that moment, Su Haoran pulled out a document. It displayed a list of phone numbers, with the top one showing a call at 2:30 AM. The registered name was clearly Chen Shu.
“This is Liang Wei’s latest call history,” Su Haoran stated. “At 2:30 AM last night, the number he answered was yours. Now, what do you have to say?”
Chen Shu panicked. “No way, you must be mistaken! I went to bed early last night, I didn’t go anywhere!”
The whole exchange was broadcast live and all the viewers were stunned.
“Holy sh*t! Zeng Zhiwei actually used Chen Shu’s phone to contact Liang Wei!”
“What a brilliant setup! Zeng Zhiwei knew calling Liang Wei from his own phone would lead the police to him, so he used Chen Shu’s instead!”
“Last night, Su Xiaoxiao was scared of Zeng Zhiwei and slept in Chen Shu’s room, while Chen Shu slept in the living room. That must have been when Zeng Zhiwei sneaked in and took his phone!”
“This is top-tier mind games!”
“Zeng Zhiwei just erased the only evidence against him and pinned everything on Chen Shu!”
“There’s no point in arguing anymore. Even if we don’t know your motive for killing Liang Wei yet, the evidence is undeniable. Just confess!” Wang Zheng yelled at Chen Shu. Then, he signaled to the officers outside. “Arrest him and take him to the station for questioning.”
In an instant, two officers stepped forward. They cuffed Chen Shu’s hands with cold, silver handcuffs then, they escorted him out of the house.
“Ugh, I can’t believe this! Chen Shu is innocent! He really didn’t do anything this time!”
“The detective team is being played. Zeng Zhiwei tricked them!”
“Damn, Chen Shu really didn’t commit any crimes in this episode.”
“All he did was wash dishes and write his sister’s diary, and now he’s getting arrested? I can’t even.”
“Zeng Zhiwei: ‘Ah Wei, do you see this? I did what you couldn’t. You can rest in peace now!’”
“Go arrest Zeng Zhiwei! He’s the real murderer!”
The police car door opened and Chen Shu was shoved inside. At the exact moment the cameras couldn’t capture his face, he smiled. He had entered the game himself.
The real show was just beginning!
