- Chapter 42 - Seeing Through Zeng Zhiwei
Chen Shu put down his phone. He still wasn’t sure what was going on. But doing nothing? Wouldn’t that make the system useless?
He was definitely going to find a way to commit a crime.
“Xiaoxiao, Xiaoshu, I’m back.” A voice called from the living room. Chen Shu stepped out of his bedroom first and there stood Zeng Zhiwei.
Short, a little chubby, and when he smiled, his eyes squinted into a thin line. Chen Shu knew that in this episode, Zeng Zhiwei was playing the role of his and Su Xiaoxiao’s father. But what was the father’s mission? He had no idea.
“Dad.” Su Xiaoxiao also came out. Unlike Chen Shu, as a professional actress, she got into character much faster. She called out to Zeng Zhiwei warmly, walked over, and took the luggage from his hands.
“My good daughter, I heard what happened to you, so I rushed back from abroad without stopping.”
“Those police officers really framed a good person. My daughter is so obedient, how could she possibly commit murder?” Zeng Zhiwei looked Su Xiaoxiao up and down. Tall figure, fair skin, like a budding flower. “Dad was worried you might run into more trouble, so I came back. Don’t worry, as long as I’m here, no one will hurt you,” Zeng Zhiwei said, reaching out to stroke Su Xiaoxiao’s cheek.
Hearing this, Su Xiaoxiao let out a breath of relief. So, the showrunners arranged for this character to protect her? That meant she didn’t have to figure out how to survive alone anymore.
This scene was streamed live, and the viewers went wild.
“Let go of Su Xiaoxiao, damn it! Hands off!”
“Su Xiaoxiao, he’s a bad guy! Don’t trust him!”
“It’s over, she’s surrounded by predators!”
“Only Chen Shu doesn’t have bad intentions toward her, but he doesn’t have a mission this time, he can’t do anything!”
“Looks like Su Xiaoxiao is about to get taken advantage of. Damn it, Zeng Zhiwei is getting off way too easy!”
“Relax, even if she gets assaulted, she’ll report it. The investigation team will take Zeng Zhiwei down in no time.”
“Honestly, this show is getting intense. The plot is packed! Both Liang Wei and Zeng Zhiwei are after Su Xiaoxiao, it’s just a matter of whether they can get away with it after committing the crime.”
“Xiaoxiao, it’s late now. Go take a shower, after you’re done, come to my room. I have some important things to tell you.” Zeng Zhiwei said to Su Xiaoxiao.
“Okay, Dad.” Su Xiaoxiao had no suspicions, because she knew this episode was a continuation of the last one. Her mission was to survive. That meant her only real threat was Liu Liang’s father.
Su Xiaoxiao walked into the bathroom. Zeng Zhiwei’s eyes followed her, but suddenly, he looked up and noticed Chen Shu watching him.
“Xiaoshu, you should get some rest too. Your sister was wrongfully accused, you must have been scared out of your mind. Just stay home and rest for the next few days,” Zeng Zhiwei said, patting Chen Shu on the shoulder.
“Mm.” Chen Shu nodded and returned to his room. Something felt off. Just now, Zeng Zhiwei’s expression wasn’t that of a normal father. That didn’t make sense. He was an award-winning actor, why would he act so unnaturally?
Something’s wrong.
“This is a simulated crime reality show. Zeng Zhiwei is playing the father, and he doesn’t know Su Xiaoxiao is the murderer. If he was just here to protect his daughter, that wouldn’t qualify as a crime.”
“In other words, he has another motive.”
Chen Shu made a deduction, at that moment, a chilling possibility crossed his mind. But he wasn’t sure yet, surely the showrunners wouldn’t go that far, right? Better observe some more.
Of course, if his suspicion turned out to be true… he wouldn’t just stand by and watch. If necessary, he wouldn’t mind getting rid of this “father.” His mission was to pick up and drop off his sister at school. If anything happened to her, stopping her from going to school…
Wouldn’t that mean mission failure?
Heh, exploiting loopholes? Chen Shu knew how to play that game too.
“Ah!” Ten minutes later, a scream from outside jolted Chen Shu. He rushed out of his room and headed straight to Su Xiaoxiao’s bedroom. Inside, Su Xiaoxiao stood there in a bathrobe while Zeng Zhiwei rummaged through her closet.
“Dad, what are you doing in my room? You scared me!”
“N-Nothing… I just saw how exhausted you’ve been lately and thought I’d check if you had any laundry. I was going to wash them for you,” Zeng Zhiwei replied.
“But…” Su Xiaoxiao’s face darkened. “I’m already grown up. You shouldn’t be going through my things. And why are my undergarments out?!”
“It was an accident,” Zeng Zhiwei explained. “Xiaoxiao, Dad’s just worried about you. You’ve been so tired lately, I just wanted to help however I can.”
“Oh…” Su Xiaoxiao smiled awkwardly. “Sorry, Dad, I misunderstood you.”
“It’s okay.” Zeng Zhiwei waved it off and stood up. “You get back to what you were doing. But don’t forget, come to my room later. I have something important to tell you.”
Before Su Xiaoxiao could reply, Chen Shu cut in. “How about we talk tomorrow? It’s late, and she has school in the morning.”
“Mm, that works too.” Zeng Zhiwei left. Afterward, Chen Shu turned to Su Xiaoxiao. “Sis, when you sleep, lock your door. Don’t sleep too deeply.”
“Huh? Why?” Su Xiaoxiao frowned.
“Liu Liang may be dead, but his father knows you’re the killer. The police couldn’t arrest you, but he won’t let you off. Stay alert, don’t let him find an opening,” Chen Shu warned.
“Brother, you’re overthinking. We’re at home, Liu Liang’s father can’t get in,” Su Xiaoxiao said with a laugh.
Chen Shu shook his head. “Even at home, you need to be careful. The police situation is settled, but there are still people lurking in the dark who might come after you. I can’t protect you from everything, so stay vigilant these days.”
“Oh…” Su Xiaoxiao nodded.
Chen Shu left the room and closed the door for her. Then, he glanced toward Zeng Zhiwei’s room. Now, he was certain. This “father” wasn’t a good guy. He was one of the criminals in this episode. What kind of father casually goes through his daughter’s clothes?
Especially when she was already grown up, wasn’t he supposed to know boundaries?
Zeng Zhiwei was an award-winning actor. There was no way his acting would be this sloppy. Which meant… he had an agenda.
“You dare interfere with my mission to take my sister to school?”
“Then I’ll find a way to get rid of you!”
