- Chapter 35 - Liang Wei Crumbles Again and Again
At Chen Shu’s home, since the show was about to end, Su Xiaoxiao could finally watch the live broadcast. She held her phone and watched the investigation team in action.
She was shocked to learn that during their first trip to the village, Chen Shu had already hidden the body in the ancestral hall. She recalled being drowsy while listening to the old village chief talk about local customs, almost falling asleep, when she vaguely sensed movement beside her from Chen Shu.
But she had been too sleepy to care.
As for the old village chief, his poor eyesight and the dim lighting in the ancestral hall meant he was unlikely to notice anything. He had been too engrossed in his storytelling to pay attention to Chen Shu’s actions.
So that was when Chen Shu hid Liu Liang’s body! Now that she thought about it, everything made sense. But just then… the moment Qin Min’s shout rang out in the live stream, Su Xiaoxiao’s mouth fell open. The conclusion she had just pieced together shattered instantly!
The box didn’t contain Liu Liang’s body. It was filled with… sheep bones?!
Su Xiaoxiao was utterly shocked. She suddenly remembered how, after they had eaten roast lamb at the farmhouse, Chen Shu had voluntarily cleaned up the leftover bones. It turned out he hadn’t thrown them away, he had secretly collected them all, sneaked into the ancestral hall under the cover of night, and hidden them under the table.
And all of this was just to toy with the investigation team? Had he predicted this outcome?
Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t believe it. She turned to look at Chen Shu, who was sitting not far away.
At that moment, she realized, calling him a genius wasn’t enough. It might be crude to say, but this man was absolutely insane!
He had actually pulled off the perfect crime!
“Bro…” Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t contain her excitement and blurted out, “How… how did you do it?”
Chen Shu turned slightly at the sound of her voice, a faint smile appearing on his lips, just like when he first saw Su Xiaoxiao accidentally kill Liu Liang.
“Sis, I told you I would help you commit the perfect crime.”
His words, like a boomerang, echoed from fifteen days ago, striking Su Xiaoxiao right in the heart. Back then, she would never have believed that this ordinary man could pull it off.
But now she realized, “Even if I turned myself in, the police wouldn’t be able to arrest me. What the hell?!”
Inside the ancestral hall of Jinfu Village. A group of people stared at the assembled sheep skeleton on the ground. The dead sheep’s hollow eyes seemed to glare at them, its mouth twisted as if mocking them with a silent, piercing laugh.
Their expressions turned grim.
“Check what’s written on the note,” Wang Zheng gritted his teeth and told Qin Min.
Qin Min retrieved a note from the bottom of the box. The live-stream camera zoomed in, revealing three bold words, “Good job!”
“Heh… heh…” Wang Zheng let out a bitter laugh. The message dripped with mockery.
“After all that effort, we’ve been fooled again. He knew we’d find this place, so he deliberately left breadcrumbs just to make us look like clowns in front of the audience!”
Su Haoran sighed, rubbing his forehead. “I knew it. If we couldn’t find any leads ourselves, there was no way the netizens could. It was all intentional from the start.”
Wang Zheng checked his watch. “Only three minutes left. We lost completely. But honestly, I don’t think we lost unfairly. Chen Shu is a worthy opponent.”
“But I still can’t figure out, where did he hide the body?” Qin Min sat on the floor, unable to accept the truth. “A corpse that big, cut up or not, can’t just vanish into thin air!”
After all, throughout the entire episode, he had been practically useless. He hadn’t even gotten a moment to shine. And now, just when he thought he was about to, he was met with sheep bones again!
He desperately wanted to see the real body!
Meanwhile, in the live stream, the chat exploded.
“What the hell? How did he pull this off?”
“Good job! Haha, straight-up mocking them. Wang Zheng looks like he’s about to cry.”
“They had no chance of solving the case in two weeks. The show even set-up Xiaoxiao’s ‘confession’ and an interactive audience event to help them, and they still failed. No wonder they’re questioning reality.”
“Wang Zheng’s confidence just shattered!”
“Chen Shu is a genius. He actually pulled off the perfect crime.”
“Honestly, I think he left that clue on purpose, just in case the show’s producers tried to pull something shady. ‘Good job’ wasn’t just for the investigators, it was a message to the production team too.”
“Wait, aren’t we forgetting someone?”
“Yeah, him! He hasn’t appeared once on camera, but the audience won’t stop talking about him!”
“Come on out, Liang Wei!”
With only a few minutes left before the show ended, netizens flooded Liang Wei’s social media, bombarding him with comments.
“Yo, yo! A thousand episodes of Detective Conan, and this is all you got?”
“Liang Wei, I sincerely recommend a crime thriller about a villain constantly scheming and causing trouble. It’s called Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf.”
“Haha, I can’t! Liang Wei was so confident before, but now he’s completely humiliated.”
“Liang Wei, good job!”
“Confirmed: Liang Wei < Chen Shu.”
“Goddammit!” Liang Wei collapsed onto his bed, staring at his phone screen. His mind was in shambles. “This doesn’t make sense! Even if Detective Conan failed me, I read Sherlock Holmes cover to cover! How could I still be wrong?”
“According to my deductions, Chen Shu should’ve hidden the body in the ancestral hall. Where else could he have put it?”
“Did he predict my prediction?”
Liang Wei still couldn’t believe it, but the truth was right in front of him. Even if he refused to accept it, what could he do?
Staring at the flood of comments, he felt himself spiraling. The more confident he had been, the more embarrassing it was now. “Dammit, I’m a clown again!”
With a wail, Liang Wei pulled his blanket over his head. He couldn’t face the world anymore.
In the director’s office, Zhang Sheng sat motionless, staring at his phone on the table.
That’s right, he was waiting. Waiting for a call. Waiting for Station Director Wu Hong’s call. With only two minutes left before the show wrapped, neither the investigation team nor the viewers had found any holes in Chen Shu’s plan.
In other words, Chen Shu had truly committed the perfect crime within two weeks.
But Wu Hong had made it clear. He couldn’t be allowed to get away with it. When faced with a problem, you find a solution.
Alright then, there’s barely any time left. I’ll wait and see what trick you can pull now. But Zhang Sheng waited and waited, and just as Zhang Bingbing was about to step in for the closing remarks, Wu Hong’s call still hadn’t come.
So, Zhang Sheng picked up his phone and dialed.
“Hello…”
“Director Wu…”
