- Chapter 34 - Emptying the Boxes
“Liang Wei!!”
“Oh my god!!”
“The production team should really thank Liang Wei. If he hadn’t pointed out the location of the hidden body, how could the detective team have found it in time?”
“Don’t worry, in the next episode, the director definitely won’t let Liang Wei off the hook. He’ll for sure cast him as the criminal, he’s too incredible!”
“Ahhh, Liang Wei, are you going to ruin Chen Shu?”
“It’s over. This time, it’s really over. What a pity… Chen Shu was so close to pulling off the perfect crime.”
At this moment, the audience had stopped complaining about the show being unfair. After all, the “Nationwide Body Hunt” event effectively drew everyone in and gave them a sense of participation. Even with an omniscient perspective, everyone was initially at a loss.
It wasn’t cheating! At least, it made more sense than forcing Su Xiaoxiao to turn herself in.
What a shame!
Why did Liang Wei have to exist alongside Chen Shu? Liang Wei’s deductions left Chen Shu with no chance to turn the tables.
Meanwhile, in the director’s room, Zhang Sheng received yet another call from the station director, Wu Hong.
“Xiao Zhang, how’s it going? Pretty good idea, huh?” Wu Hong’s voice came through the phone.
“Director, you’re amazing! This event not only stopped the online backlash but also helped find Liu Liang’s body using the power of the public,” Zhang Sheng said, making sure to flatter his boss appropriately.
“You still need to learn a lot. You can’t just think about avoiding problems when they arise. Look, if we had gone with your idea and let Chen Shu commit the perfect crime, what would be the point of this show?”
“That’s why you need to use your brain, there are always more solutions than problems.” Wu Hong continued his lecture.
“Yes, yes, I still have a lot to learn from you, Director.” Zhang Sheng felt a bit annoyed but couldn’t deny that the “Nationwide Corpse Hunt” event had indeed saved the core purpose of the show.
Experience does matter.
To reach the position of station director, Wu Hong certainly had some skills.
“Alright, now that the box with the body has been found, let the detective team open it. Also, make sure the show wraps up properly.” With that, Wu Hong hung up the phone.
“Music, start!”
“Lighting, in place!”
“Camera crew, prepare for close-ups!”
Zhang Sheng gave out his orders one by one.
At the ancestral hall, the police officers carried out the cardboard boxes filled with white candles.
“Captain Wang, these boxes have a faint scent of blood. Chen Shu must have treated them somehow, but there’s no doubt, the body he dismembered is inside! He must have placed the organs in each box,” an officer reported.
“Hmm.” Wang Zheng nodded and checked his watch.
There were only about ten minutes left until the show ended.
That was close! If they hadn’t figured out Chen Shu’s actions at the last moment, he couldn’t imagine what would have happened.
One thing was certain, Chen Shu had both the mentality and the guts of a top-tier criminal. If someone like him committed crimes in real life, he would be a nightmare to deal with.
As a veteran detective, Wang Zheng wasn’t frustrated that he hadn’t solved the case himself. On the contrary, this episode had taught him a lot.
Chen Shu, an ordinary person, had given all three of them a valuable lesson.
This was the real educational value of the show! It not only taught the audience that justice would always prevail but also reminded detectives never to underestimate any case.
“After this episode, the three of us need to hit the books again.” Wang Zheng glanced at Qin Min and Su Haoran. They both nodded in agreement.
Then, Wang Zheng turned to Qin Min and said, “Alright, Qin, it’s finally your turn. Empty out all the boxes. Even though we relied on outside help, at least we secured the final victory. You should have your moment in the spotlight too.”
“Got it.” Qin Min put on his gloves. He had been waiting for this moment for a long time. After all, crime scene investigation wasn’t his forte.
In previous episodes, bodies were usually found right away, and he would examine them, guiding the investigation through forensic clues. But this episode was different, the body only appeared at the very end.
Honestly, it has been frustrating.
Eagerly, he crouched down and carefully tipped the white candles out of the boxes. Buried among them were the dismembered body parts.
Meanwhile, the live broadcast cameras zoomed in. Soon, one by one, eerie white bones clattered onto the concrete floor, mixed with the candles.
“Bones! Holy crap, that’s terrifying.”
“Chen Shu is ruthless. He really chopped the entire body into pieces.”
“Can we get a mosaic or something? I’m scared!”
“Why? It’s just a realistic human bone prop. Nothing to be scared of.”
“Hey, can you at least try to immerse yourself in the scene?”
“Ahh, it’s over. Gotta admit, this episode was amazing. Chen Shu is the only criminal so far who managed to last until the final day.”
“Too bad he still couldn’t pull off the perfect crime.”
“Wake up! The production team was never going to allow a perfect crime. They would always find a way to bring the criminal to justice.”
The live broadcast’s viewership skyrocketed to 80 million! For a variety show, this was an unprecedented achievement.
Looking back, the show had been full of ups and downs over the past two weeks.
At first, everyone thought Chen Shu was just a slacker. But then he unleashed a series of mind-blowing tactics, shocking everyone. That was the first peak in popularity.
Then came the “Nationwide Corpse Hunt,” which pushed the hype even higher. And now, in the final ten minutes before the show ended, the detective team had finally found Liu Liang’s body bringing everything to a satisfying conclusion.
It sent a clear message to the audience. There is no such thing as a perfect crime.
“Camera, zoom out for a full shot of the detective team.”
“Music, what are you waiting for?”
“Bingbing, get ready for the closing monologue.”
“Oh, and camera crew, don’t forget to capture the moment Chen Shu is arrested and put into the police car!”
Zhang Sheng’s voice filled the live broadcast control room. Exciting music surged, fueling the viewers’ emotions as they watched the criminal’s downfall. The production team followed Zhang Sheng’s instructions meticulously.
“Captain Wang!!” Suddenly, just as the cameras were about to capture the detective team’s close-up, Qin Min let out a sharp scream.
“What’s wrong?” Wang Zheng asked.
“This… this…” Qin Min’s voice trembled. He turned to Wang Zheng with a complicated expression. “These aren’t Liu Liang’s remains. They’re all sheep bones!!”
“What?!” Wang Zheng’s legs almost gave out in shock.
“Qin Min, what the hell are you talking about?” Su Haoran demanded.
“I’m not making this up! Come and see for yourself!” In a panic, Qin Min dumped out all the remaining boxes. More sheep bones tumbled onto the floor, mixed in with the candles. When they assembled the bones, they formed a complete sheep skeleton.
“We’ve been played again!!” Qin Min let out a scream.
Then, as all the boxes were emptied, he spotted a piece of paper tucked inside one of them.
“Captain Wang, Haoran, look! Chen Shu left a note! It says…”
