- Chapter 27 - If You Do It, There Will Be Traces!
“It’s over. This time, it’s really over.”
“They couldn’t find the body before, so we knew the investigation team had no way to get evidence. But now, Su Xiaoxiao admitted it herself, if they find the body, Chen Shu won’t be able to deny it.”
“Betrayed by an accomplice. There’s nothing worse than that!”
“If the actress playing the sister wasn’t Su Xiaoxiao, I’d be cursing already. Damn it!”
“Enough, stop saying pointless things. From the moment this show started, the outcome was set. Seeing a nobody like Chen Shu pull off such a brilliant strategy was already unexpected!”
“Yeah, the process was exciting. Let’s not dwell on the ending.”
In the pouring rain, Su Xiaoxiao led Wang Zheng and his team out of the building into the courtyard.
Meanwhile, Chen Shu was being restrained by two officers. They held onto his shoulders as he stood in the rain, silently watching everything unfold.
“Right here,” Su Xiaoxiao stopped in the center of the courtyard and pointed at the ground.
Her voice was steady, emotionless but deep inside, she was struggling. When she got Zhang Sheng’s call yesterday, asking her to turn herself in, she refused at first.
Why should she?
Chen Shu, a nobody, had managed to deceive everyone with his own skills. And yet, as his sister, she was supposed to betray him? She couldn’t do it!
But as an actress, she had no reason to refuse. Whatever the director said, she had to follow. Besides, she understood the reason behind it, it was about returning to the show’s original purpose: educating the public and preventing crime.
So, she reached out to Wang Zheng and chose to surrender.
“Dig!” At Wang Zheng’s command, several officers grabbed their shovels and started digging through the wet soil.
Meanwhile, Su Haoran knelt down, grabbed a handful of dirt, and sniffed it.
“No wonder I couldn’t find any traces of a buried body last time.”
“So that’s why…”
“A small amount of fertilizer, with its strong smell, can interfere with police dogs.”
“And back then, a heavy rain washed away the scent of the decaying body.”
“All these factors together, he really pulled it off.”
Su Haoran frowned, shaking his head in disappointment at himself. At the same time, Wang Zheng and Qin Min stood nearby, their faces calm. They had been searching for evidence for days, but nothing.
Chen Shu’s plan was flawless, not a single slip-up, and now, they knew this wasn’t their victory.
In the battle of wits, they had lost.
If the show didn’t require the criminal to lose, would Su Xiaoxiao have ever turned herself in?
Impossible.
“Alright, there’s no need to be too discouraged,” Qin Min said, trying to comfort Wang Zheng and Su Haoran. “Think about it, Chen Shu fooled all of us, but Su Xiaoxiao’s surrender proves one thing. If you commit a crime, there will always be traces.”
“Yeah,” Su Haoran nodded, snapping out of his self-doubt. “In other words, Su Xiaoxiao was a ticking time bomb. While Chen Shu tried to cover for her, he also had to guard against her. He accounted for everything except that his sister would turn herself in.”
“Exactly. In the end, perfect crimes don’t exist. Su Xiaoxiao saw everything he did. As long as she’s alive, the truth will always remain,” Wang Zheng added.
“So…” Qin Min continued, “We didn’t really lose. It was just a matter of time. If we had more time, we would’ve found clues from Su Xiaoxiao even without her confession.”
“Right,” Wang Zheng nodded. He wasn’t just making excuses, Qin Min’s words had given him insight. In this world, committing a crime always leaves a trace.
And in this case, Su Xiaoxiao was that trace.
As long as she was alive, the truth would come out eventually. But due to the show’s time constraints, they simply hadn’t been able to prove it in time.
Their conversation was broadcasted live. The audience agreed.
“You can’t hide the truth forever. The showrunners were right to have Su Xiaoxiao turn herself in.”
“Yeah, if the trio had more time, they might have solved the case even without her confession.”
“Su Xiaoxiao’s surrender just sped up the process.”
The rain kept pouring, drenching Chen Shu.
Wang Zheng walked over and said, “Chen Shu, I have to admit, you fooled all of us for these past ten days. But now, you should understand that there’s no such thing as a perfect crime.”
“Anyone who witnesses your crime could eventually become the final straw that breaks you.”
“Traces can never be completely erased.”
Hearing this, Chen Shu didn’t reply. He simply smiled at Wang Zheng and the others. Rainwater trickled down his lips as he smirked.
“Captain Wang, we found it!”
A voice echoed through the courtyard. Immediately, the live broadcast camera zoomed in on the deep pit that had been dug. Inside was a large, tied-up burlap sack.
“Open it,” Wang Zheng ordered.
The officers carefully dragged the sack out and began untying it. All eyes were locked on it. Even the entire production crew was watching intently, because once that sack was opened, and Liu Liang’s body was revealed, it would mark the end of the case.
The show’s finale.
“Brother…”
“I’m sorry…”
“I should’ve turned myself in from the start. I shouldn’t have dragged you into this…”
“I’m sorry…”
“I know we did wrong. I know there’s no such thing as a perfect crime. We were bound to be caught eventually… That’s why I wanted to confess earlier. I’m sorry… I’m really sorry…”
Su Xiaoxiao sobbed. She had completely immersed herself in the role. The guilt of dragging her brother down, the unbearable pressure that led her to betrayal, it all poured out.
But Chen Shu didn’t respond. He stood there silently, hands restrained by the officers.
Rip.
As the burlap sack was sliced open, bit by bit, the contents inside began to emerge. After being buried for ten days the body was finally revealed! The officers moved in, ready to take Chen Shu into custody and transport him to the city for trial.
“Captain Wang…”
But then, a sharp, disbelieving voice rang out.
Everyone froze.
“It’s not Liu Liang’s body!”
“It’s a sheep!”
