- I Asked You To Simulate A Crime, And You Pulled Off The Perfect Crime?
- Chapter 26 - Educational Significance? Just Say You Can’t Play
One day earlier.
As the show neared its final countdown, Zhang Sheng was ecstatic. This meant that for the first time since its inception, a criminal had successfully committed the perfect crime!
By then, the show’s overall popularity would surely break a billion views! As the director, he would also gain more recognition for this achievement. For him, it was an unexpected delight.
Of course, aside from the professional benefits, he was also amazed by Chen Shu’s methods. Who would have thought that such seemingly ordinary actions would turn out to be intricate setups?
Even the detective trio had found no evidence to convict him after their exhaustive interrogations. It wasn’t that they weren’t good enough. It was just that Chen Shu was simply too brilliant!
However, just as Zhang Sheng thought this episode would conclude with Chen Shu executing the perfect crime, he received another call from the station director, Wu Hong.
As the show’s director, Zhang Sheng had the highest authority on set. But in the grander scheme of the entertainment industry, the station director belonged to the television leadership level, overseeing all programs, big and small.
“Zhang Sheng, we’re almost at the halfway mark of the month, and the investigation team still hasn’t apprehended Chen Shu and his sister. The purpose of our show is to highlight the exceptional skills of the detectives!”
“But now, the criminals are about to get away scot-free.”
Wu Hong’s words echoed in Zhang Sheng’s ears. He instantly understood what the director meant. While Wu Hong was happy about the show’s success, the main reason this program was approved was to deter crime and warn the public.
If criminals escaped justice, wouldn’t that send the opposite message?
It might even embolden potential criminals in society, it would show them that perfect crimes truly exist!
From an entertainment perspective, Zhang Sheng actually wanted Chen Shu to escape judgment, but from a real-world educational standpoint, this wasn’t a good outcome!
“Director, I understand what you mean, but right now, the investigation team has made no progress. Chen Shu has destroyed all the evidence and there’s no way to convict him.”
“So, why not just let it be?”
“Besides, in the history of our show, no actor has ever managed to escape justice. If this ordinary contestant actually pulls it off, our show’s popularity will reach an entirely new level!”
Zhang Sheng tried to persuade Wu Hong.
“No,” Wu Hong firmly replied. “If the perfect crime truly happens, this show will be shut down. The broadcasting authority won’t tolerate such an outcome.”
“Sigh,” Zhang Sheng sighed. “Then what should we do, Director? There’s really no evidence to expose Chen Shu.”
On the other end of the line, Wu Hong fell silent for a moment. Then he spoke again, “I have an idea. It might be against the rules, but it’s the only way.”
“What idea?” Zhang Sheng asked.
“Contact Su Xiaoxiao and make her turn herself in!”
“What?”
Zhang Sheng was momentarily speechless. As show staff, they weren’t supposed to interfere with the plot’s development. The audience would surely criticize them for this!
After all, the whole point of the show was the battle between the detectives and the criminals. If the production team stepped in to help the investigators, wouldn’t that be admitting they couldn’t handle the game?
“Calm down and hear me out.”
Wu Hong continued, “Tell Su Xiaoxiao that after accidentally killing Liu Liang, she has been haunted by guilt, suffering from relentless nightmares and unbearable psychological pressure. Eventually, she decides to turn herself in to ease her conscience.”
“This way, we’re not directly interfering with the plot while still delivering an educational message.”
Hearing this, even though Zhang Sheng was reluctant, he had no choice. As Wu Hong said, if the criminals truly got away, the broadcasting authority would intervene! So, he had no choice but to agree.
Back to the present.
Under the torrential rain, inside the house, Chen Shu stared in disbelief at Su Xiaoxiao as she walked out of the kitchen.
His sister had turned herself in!
“Brother, I’m sorry…”
“The past few days, the psychological pressure has been overwhelming, I just can’t pretend everything is fine.”
“Every night, I dream about Liu Liang…”
“Ever since I accidentally killed him, I haven’t had a single peaceful night’s sleep…”
“So, I chose to turn myself in, to give my conscience some relief…”
Su Xiaoxiao’s voice filled the entire live broadcast. The audience immediately exploded.
“What the hell?! Only three days left, and Chen Shu was so close to escaping judgment, why would you turn yourself in now?!”
“I thought Chen Shu, as a regular contestant, would slip up, but I never expected Su Xiaoxiao to mess things up instead!”
“This show is scripted. As a crime prevention reality show, of course they wouldn’t actually let criminals escape justice.”
“Damn, I’m so mad! The investigation team couldn’t find any evidence to convict Chen Shu, so in the end, they just made Su Xiaoxiao turn herself in? Wow, so they really can’t handle losing, huh?”
“Ah, classic domestic reality shows. If you know, you know.”
The internet was flooded with outrage. Viewers were furious!
They were watching the show for entertainment. But in the end, they got a lesson in morality instead.
Did the producers really love preaching that much?
However, some viewers had a different take.
“This show is all about the battle of wits between both sides. The outcome was predetermined, criminals were always meant to be caught.”
“Exactly. In a lawful society, a perfect crime would never be allowed.”
“My kid is only seven. If he saw that Chen Shu committed a crime and still escaped justice, it would definitely have a negative impact on him.”
In any case, the moment Su Xiaoxiao turned herself in, the internet erupted into chaos.
Some viewers lamented that Chen Shu had meticulously erased all the evidence but overlooked Su Xiaoxiao. Of course, this wasn’t something he could control. After all, Su Xiaoxiao was a living, breathing person. If she wanted to confess, who could stop her?
What a shame.
Such a shame!
As the furious audience flooded the live broadcast with comments, Su Xiaoxiao walked toward Wang Zheng.
She began her confession, “Officer Wang, I killed Liu Liang.”
“I’ve been under extreme mental stress these past few days. I truly regret what I did. If I could go back in time, I would have turned myself in the moment I accidentally killed him.”
“His body is in the yard!”
“My brother misled the police dogs with fertilizer, which is why you couldn’t find it.”
“I’ll take you there…”
