- Chapter 24 - Art + Crime, the Internet Explodes
Chen Shu’s scheme quickly stirred up a storm online. The top three trending topics were dominated by him.
“#Chen Shu manipulated time and deceived the entire internet!”
“#A nobody’s scheme, shockingly brilliant!”
“#The investigation team remained steady and exposed Chen Shu’s tricks!”
His name flooded the internet, leaving netizens in awe.
“I gotta be honest, I never expected things to turn out this way. He not only fooled the investigation team but even tricked us viewers. Two words, absolutely insane!”
“Thinking back to past episodes, even the best actors playing criminals never posed a real challenge to the investigators. But now, Chen Shu actually made them argue? That’s next-level!”
“That being said, the investigation team is amazing too! This back-and-forth is a real battle of wits!”
“Chen Shu is a genius!”
Amidst the praise, some people felt lucky that Su Xiaoxiao accidentally led Chen Shu onto a film set. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have witnessed such an incredible crime technique.
If award-winning actor Liang Wei had played the role of the brother, he would have delivered a more immersive performance. But there was no way he could have pulled off such a sophisticated crime!
Public opinion online started to shift completely in Chen Shu’s favor. Soon, another trending topic quietly emerged.
“#Thank goodness! Liang Wei, just stay in bed#”
The moment this went viral, Liang Wei, lying in his hotel room, felt utterly crushed.
Aside from the praise, Chen Shu’s use of montage in crime sparked discussions among content creators. Most were just riding the trend, providing shallow analyses.
But then, a user named Fu Zhengyi posted a comment praising Chen Shu.
At first, people dismissed him as another clout chaser. But when they checked his profile, they realized this guy was the most authoritative editing master in China’s entertainment industry!
He had worked on legendary productions like Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and The Yellow Storm; almost every major Chinese film and drama had his fingerprints on them.
“As an editor, I’m well aware that montage is primarily used in film editing. But Chen Shu’s execution on the show took my understanding to a whole new level. I never imagined montage could be used for crime!”
Fu Zhengyi first praised Chen Shu, then provided an expert breakdown.
“This isn’t just a simple imitation, it’s a result of his own thought process and innovation. By carefully arranging different scenes and leveraging human psychology, he successfully orchestrated an elaborate time swap.”
“I initially thought Chen Shu must have a filmmaking background to come up with such a creative crime technique. But after looking into him, I realized he’s not even part of the industry.”
“I’m really curious to see what other artistic techniques he’ll apply to crime in future episodes!”
Fu Zhengyi’s words only made Chen Shu’s method seem even more shocking.
Thus, the label Art + Crime was born.
The show exploded in popularity, surpassing all previous episodes. Chen Shu’s artistry attracted countless viewers who weren’t even interested in crime-related content.
Meanwhile, in the director’s room, Zhang Sheng received a call from station director Wu Hong.
If this were before, Zhang Sheng would have been terrified. He had almost tanked the show by bringing in a random contestant, he could’ve been fired for it.
But now? He picked up the phone without hesitation, his face smug.
“Zhang Sheng, well done!”
“The show has gone viral thanks to this contestant! You’re the hero!”
Wu Hong’s excitement was palpable.
Though the show was already popular, its audience mainly consisted of crime enthusiasts and fans of the movie star cast. But now, it has broken through to an even wider audience.
Zhang Sheng chuckled. He didn’t boast but simply replied, “Director, I’m just doing my job. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure this episode is absolutely flawless.”
“Good, good, good!”
Wu Hong continued to shower him with praise before hanging up. Zhang Sheng leaned back in his chair, legs crossed, basking in his victory. While the internet was in an uproar, the atmosphere in the city was suffocatingly tense.
The tea in Wang Zheng’s hand had gone cold.
“Captain Wang, if Chen Shu went to the countryside on April 3rd, then where did his previous train ticket come from?”
“Was it forged?”
“If it was a fake…”
Before Qin Min could finish, Su Haoran interrupted, “Don’t waste time on the train ticket. The countryside buses don’t require ID registration, just a ticket with a date. With so many weekend tourists visiting the rapeseed fields, it would’ve been easy to grab a few tickets from April 2nd.”
“So from the moment he left for the countryside, he had already laid the groundwork for everything?” Despite having witnessed Chen Shu’s methods, Qin Min still couldn’t hide his shock.
Wang Zheng nodded. “That’s right. This Chen Shu is even more formidable than I initially thought.”
“So where do we go from here?” Qin Min asked before quickly realizing something. “Since we’ve exposed his attempt to mislead the witnesses, we can simply tell them the correct date and have them testify against him.”
“That won’t work,” Su Haoran said. “People only believe what they see and hear for themselves. In their minds, Chen Shu went to the countryside on April 2nd. If we suddenly tell them they’re wrong, they’ll just think we’re manipulating them. That kind of testimony won’t hold up in court.”
Silence fell over the room, the Iron Trio now faced a difficult reality. Even though they had unraveled Chen Shu’s tactics, they still couldn’t convict him.
There simply wasn’t enough evidence to pin him down!
“At this point, we really don’t have any other options.”
“Every possible lead, witnesses, alibis, and surveillance were accounted for in Chen Shu’s plan. He didn’t leave a single gap.”
“And we haven’t even found the body yet.”
“Time is running out…”
“It looks like we’re really about to lose this one…”
