Chen Shu recalled the disheveled look Su Xiaoxiao had last night, and the rotten, bloody stench he’d caught from the back of her neck. He couldn’t make sense of it.
With all these questions in mind, he stepped through the school gate and made his way toward the building ahead. Finally, he reached the third floor, looking at the long hallway, he frowned slightly. Unlike the liveliness downstairs, this hallway was eerily empty.
Chen Shu walked the entire corridor, from the far-left stairwell all the way to the far-right one. Suddenly, he saw a crowd gathered at the stairwell leading from the third floor to the rooftop. They looked like they were watching something unfold.
Smack! Smack!
From behind them, Chen Shu heard the sharp, stinging sound of slaps echoing from the rooftop. It was crisp and harsh like someone was repeatedly slapping another’s face with brutal force. Then came a woman’s vicious voice, filled with curses and insults, vile and degrading. She was trampling someone’s dignity without mercy.
Ring. The school bell rang, startling the onlookers. They quickly dispersed, slipping past Chen Shu and disappearing down the hallway. Then, from the rooftop stairs, a short-haired girl emerged.
There was a smug smile on her face. As she walked, she casually smoothed her slightly messy hair, looking completely at ease, as if she’d done this many times before.
“What are you looking at?” she suddenly barked, noticing Chen Shu’s gaze. Her tone was blunt and rude. Then she asked, “Who are you? What are you doing here?”
Chen Shu shook his head slightly. “Oh, I just came to deliver a book to my sister.”
“Tch.” Yamamoto Sakura scoffed, bumped past him, and walked off. Chen Shu watched her leave, then lifted his gaze toward the rooftop. He felt a deep sense of unease rising in his chest. Because… he could smell it again. The same scent that had clung to his sister.
He could also faintly hear labored breathing coming from above.
Creak. Chen Shu pushed open the metal rooftop door and stepped out onto a flat, open rooftop. Water stains were scattered across the surface, along with snack wrappers that hadn’t been cleaned up, and cigarette butts crushed into the corners.
He stepped further in, but he didn’t see his sister.
“Hmm?” He frowned, puzzled but also… a little relieved.
Maybe he was overthinking it. His sister had such good grades, was kind and well-behaved. How could she possibly be the target of bullying? Thinking this, Chen Shu turned to leave.
But, just as he turned around, he saw it and his blood surged with fury. The veins on his forehead bulged, his anger reached a breaking point.
There, on the wall with the metal door, Su Xiaoxiao was pressed against it. It was as if she’d been glued there. Her arms and legs were outstretched, just like… Jesus nailed to the cross.
The pale gray wall behind her made her small figure appear even more fragile. Like she was sinking into a swamp, being slowly swallowed whole.
“F**k! I’m seriously done with Yamamoto Sakura’s evil ass. How could she torture Su Xiaoxiao like this?”
“She just got back to school today, and Yamamoto Sakura couldn’t wait to attack. At this rate, she’ll be bullied to death!”
“My heart hurts for Su Xiaoxiao. All bullies deserve to rot.”
“Chen Shu saw it. He’s seeing it now. He won’t let Yamamoto Sakura off the hook.”
“Chen Shu: Yamamoto Sakura is dead. Not even Jesus can save her now. I mean it!”
“She has to die!!!”
In the livestream, the scene of Su Xiaoxiao stuck to the wall was burned into every viewer’s eyes. They were enraged, and in the director’s room, Zhang Sheng saw it too.
A chill ran down his spine. He was genuinely stunned by Yamamoto Sakura’s cruelty. At the same time… fear crept into his heart.
“I specifically set her character card so she couldn’t tell him she was being bullied. But now… Chen Shu saw it with his own eyes. What do I do?”
“Chen Shu dotes on his sister. He’ll definitely break the story flow and interfere.”
Zhang Sheng rubbed his temples. Then his brows eased a little as he muttered, “His task is to study hard and focus on medical research. If he gets involved in a school drama and spends all his time on his sister, his mission will fail anyway.”
“And Yamamoto Sakura’s father is the school principal. Even if Chen Shu wants revenge, it won’t be that easy. Hahaha. Given his current role and task, he’s at a huge disadvantage. What can he possibly do against Yamamoto Sakura?”
“If she even suspects he’s plotting something, all she has to do is have her dad kick him out.”
Zhang Sheng straightened his clothes. He now had a general idea of what to expect. So he calmed himself and turned back to the livestream.
Below the pale gray wall, Chen Shu stood on tiptoe, carefully peeling Su Xiaoxiao off. The glue binding her to the wall and her clothes was extremely strong. Even her hair had been stuck to the surface.
Each time Chen Shu pulled, Su Xiaoxiao let out a soft whimper. “Brother… it hurts…”
“It’s okay… really… it’s okay…” Chen Shu slowed his movements. He took out a scalpel and carefully cut through the strands of hair that were too deeply stuck to the wall.
He endured the pain in his chest, held back the tears in his eyes. He had never cried in front of his sister. Not when the police brought him in, not when they pushed him to the brink over and over.
He never cried because he wanted to give her a strong sense of safety. He couldn’t let her see his weakness. But this time, Chen Shu couldn’t hold it in. Looking at her swollen cheeks, red from slaps, looking at her crucified against the wall like some sacrificial offering to her classmates.
His tears slid silently down the bridge of his nose and dropped to the rooftop floor.
Drip, drip.
