- Chapter 177 - Not Telling
When the viewers saw Su Xiaoxiao running home with fear written all over her face, the livestream chat exploded with speculation.
“What’s going on with Su Xiaoxiao? Why is she so afraid of Liang Wei?”
“Right? He kindly let her wash her hair at his place. He clearly didn’t mean her any harm.”
“Are you blind? There was blood on the back of Su Xiaoxiao’s neck. It clearly dripped from the ceiling. That means Liang Wei hid his mother-in-law’s corpse above the bathroom ceiling, and Su Xiaoxiao accidentally found it!”
“And Liang Wei’s mission is to kill anyone who discovers his secret. Doesn’t that mean Su Xiaoxiao’s doomed?”
“She’s bullied by Yamamoto Sakura, leered at by Yamamoto Yuu, resented by An Jiayu… now even the security captain wants to silence her. Honestly, she might as well stop going to school.”
“Seriously. Born under a cursed star, confirmed!”
“Please, someone tell Chen Shu and let him crush them all!”
In the director’s room, Zhang Sheng grinned as he watched the scene unfold. “Hehehe… now things are getting good. I thought Yamamoto Sakura would be the one to torment Su Xiaoxiao to death. But now she’s stumbled onto Liang Wei’s secret, and both of them will want her dead. There’s almost no way she survives this!”
“As for Chen Shu, he can just sit at home and study his medicine. School matters are completely beyond his reach now.” Zhang Sheng crossed his legs in satisfaction.
Beep, beep. The phone on his desk lit up and vibrated.
Zhang Sheng answered. “Hello? Old Wu? The show’s already streaming, everything’s going perfectly.”
“Yeah, I saw,” Wu Hong replied. “By the way, Xiao Zhang, do you remember who you assigned the ‘Midnight Chainsaw Man’ identity card to?”
Zhang Sheng said, “Director, I swear, there’s no manipulation this time. I truly picked at random. I don’t even know who got it. But don’t worry, with a one-in-six chance, there’s no way it landed on Chen Shu.”
“Good.” Wu Hong’s voice relaxed. Then he asked, “What’s the hidden mission tied to that identity?”
“It’s not fixed,” Zhang Sheng replied. “The ‘Midnight Chainsaw Man’ card comes with a special note. The hidden task adjusts depending on the character’s background. If Yamamoto Yuu was selected, the task would involve his daughter. If it was Liang Wei, it would involve his wife.”
“And if Chen Shu was chosen… the hidden mission would involve his sister. But if Su Xiaoxiao dies…” He chuckled. “Then that mission is doomed to fail.”
“I see,” Wu Hong said thoughtfully. “Alright then, I really hope Yamamoto Yuu is the Chainsaw Man. Judging by how things are going, he and his daughter have the upper hand. If they can pull off an impressive crime, that would be excellent. We can’t let Chen Shu and his sister hog all the spotlight forever.”
“Exactly!” Zhang Sheng agreed, and then ended the call. His attention returned to the livestream feed.
On screen, Su Xiaoxiao had buried her face in Chen Shu’s chest, curled up on the floor, trembling and sobbing uncontrollably. Chen Shu gently patted her back, trying to soothe her. It took a long time before she finally calmed down.
“Xiaoxiao,” he said softly, “you just said you don’t want to go to school anymore. Did something happen? Or are you feeling unwell?”
“Tell me, please.” Seeing that she’d stopped crying, he pressed gently for answers. But Su Xiaoxiao raised her head, wiped away her tears, and forced a small smile. “Brother, I’m fine. It’s just… senior year is really stressful. I had a bit of a breakdown earlier. I didn’t mean what I said, don’t worry about me, and don’t overthink it.”
“Really?” Chen Shu didn’t quite believe her.
“Of course.” Su Xiaoxiao pulled herself out of his arms. “Anyway, it’s getting late. I can only come home once a week. I should get some good sleep.” With that, she headed toward the bedroom while the audience erupted.
“Ahhh, why didn’t she tell Chen Shu?! I’m dying here!”
“Seriously! If she just told him, everything could be solved!”
“Chill out. Her identity card clearly says she can’t drag her brother into this. And she doesn’t want to. She’d rather endure it alone.”
“Damn this director. He’s just being cruel now!”
“If Su Xiaoxiao can’t speak up, then let’s hope Chen Shu figures out what’s going on himself!”
Chen Shu stood up, staring at Su Xiaoxiao’s back. His nose twitched, his eyes narrowed on the back of her neck. There was a smell, not fresh blood, but something worse. It smelled like death, like rotting flesh mixed with old blood.
“Why does she smell like that? Hasn’t she been at school this whole time? What… did she go through?” Chen Shu was filled with questions and growing unease. Clearly, his sister was hiding something and it wasn’t something small.
Click. Su Xiaoxiao’s bedroom door shut. Chen Shu withdrew his gaze and looked down at the medical books on the sofa.
Study? How was he supposed to study like this?
“It looks like… I’ll need to make a trip to the school myself tomorrow night.”
