- Chapter 171 - Hidden Identity – The Midnight Chainsaw Killer
Creaaak. Just as Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao were joking about Liang Wei’s wife, a luxurious convertible car pulled up on the road outside the building. The loud rumble of the engine drew attention instantly.
“Damn, speak of the devil and she appears,” Su Xiaoxiao lifted her head and looked through the floor-to-ceiling window. Chen Shu turned to look as well.
From the driver’s seat stepped out a tall, broad-shouldered man in a black suit, clearly not a local, his skin dark, a foreigner. After getting out, he respectfully opened the rear door, and a beautiful woman, around twenty-seven years old, stepped out.
She had a coat draped over her shoulders, an LV red mini bag dangling from her hand, and walked confidently along the path toward the building.
“Is that An Jiayu?” Chen Shu asked.
Su Xiaoxiao replied, “Yep, she’s playing Liang Wei’s wife.”
Chen Shu narrowed his eyes. “She gives me a strange vibe.”
Su Xiaoxiao blinked. “What kind of vibe?”
Chen Shu thought for a moment and said, “Liang Wei is annoying, makes you want to punch him. But his wife… really makes you want to kill her.”
Clack, clack. Since the door had been left open, An Jiayu and the foreigner walked straight inside.
She glanced at Su Xiaoxiao and said with a smirk, “Xiaoxiao, the last episode ended nearly a month ago. You’ve been staying at Chen Shu’s place all this time? Aren’t you worried about scandals? You are a public figure, maybe act like one.”
Then, as if she owned the place, she plopped down on a seat.
Su Xiaoxiao replied, “The next episode’s about to start. I’m just learning some criminal techniques from my brother. What’s wrong with that?”
An Jiayu smiled, “Oh? And what have you learned so far?”
Su Xiaoxiao replied coolly, “Plenty. Enough to kill you.”
An Jiayu let out a chuckle, clearly unimpressed.
Irritated by her arrogance, Su Xiaoxiao snapped, “An Jiayu, in the next episode, you’re playing Liang Wei’s wife. Since the storyline takes place three years before the previous episode, that means you’re definitely going to die!”
In the episode “Say Hi to Your Sister-in-Law,” it had already been established that Liang Wei’s wife was dead. So naturally, if this is a prequel, then by narrative logic, An Jiayu’s character should die.
But An Jiayu waved her hand dismissively. “You’re ignoring something important, the timeline. The show never said when Liang Wei’s wife died. Could’ve been two years ago, maybe even one. So why are you so sure she’ll die in this episode?”
Su Xiaoxiao froze. Huh, she had a point. Damn. Can’t out-argue her now!
“Ahem,” Chen Shu cleared his throat, cutting into their conversation. He looked at An Jiayu and said, “Okay, real talk, partnering with Liang Wei next episode? Isn’t that basically a death sentence?”
Su Xiaoxiao added, “Yeah exactly! Liang the Dummy is so useless.”
“Heh,” An Jiayu shook her head. “Su Xiaoxiao, you only win by riding on Chen Shu’s coattails. Don’t get too smug. I’m not like you. Even if my partner’s awful, I’ll rely on myself.”
She then pointed at the man next to her. “This is someone I paid a hefty price to hire, a criminal mastermind. I’ve spent the entire past month learning techniques from him.”
The man spoke in broken Chinese, “Hello, my name is Qin Tairong. I am Miss An’s criminal consultant. The methods I’ve taught her, even a pig could win with them.”
Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao exchanged a glance.
Ah, so he’s a tutor. They thought he was her bodyguard.
Then An Jiayu turned back to Su Xiaoxiao, “You and Yamamoto Sakura, one leans on her brother, the other on her father. But me? I lean on myself. Just wait and see! In the next episode, I’ll carry Liang the Dummy to victory.”
Chen Shu gave her a thumbs-up. “Who says women can’t be just as good as men? I believe in you.”
Su Xiaoxiao, with trademark sarcasm, added, “Liang the Dummy really hit the jackpot marrying you.”
“Glad you understand,” An Jiayu stood and looked at the sibling pair. “Anyway, I just came to chat. Nothing more. See you when the next episode airs.”
And with that, she walked out with her so-called criminal advisor.
After they left and the car disappeared down the road, Su Xiaoxiao puffed out her cheeks. “Bro, I swear I’m not gonna coast this next round. I’m gonna chop her to pieces myself. Don’t stop me! Liang Wei’s wife? Yeah, she’s totally going down because of me, Su Xiaoxiao. Hmph!”
“Hold on,” Chen Shu calmed her down. “We haven’t even seen what identity cards and missions the show will assign us. Once we know, we can plan together and figure out the best way to kill her.”
Su Xiaoxiao clenched her fists. “Siblings united! Yayayayay!”
Chen Shu, “?”
Time flew by, and it was now July 6th. At exactly 7:30 p.m., The Inescapable Justice‘s official livestream kicked off. In just one minute, millions of viewers poured in.
“It’s finally live! I was about to lose my membership waiting for this!”
“Let’s gooo, waiting on Chen Shu’s entrance!”
“So excited! What kind of crime will Chen Shu pull off this time?”
“I have a feeling he’s gonna flop this time. They say “third time’s the charm,” so no way he pulls off a fourth perfect crime. Besides, this episode features paired teams, Yamamoto and his daughter are teaming up, and on paper, their crime skills outmatch Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao’s.”
“Chen Shu: “Our sibling crime score is 999. I carry 1000. My sister is -1.””
As the audience flooded the chat, the livestream screen showed host Zhang Bingbing’s familiar face. She smiled and greeted everyone, “Hello, viewers! Long time no see. Welcome to Episode 9 of Inescapable Justice.”
“Alright, let’s cut to the chase. I’m sure everyone already knows the show’s core premise. But before we dive in, I want to remind all of you watching. For a better tomorrow, and for your family’s well-being, stay on the right path, say no to crime, and strive to be model citizens!”
With the brief opening done, Zhang Bingbing flipped to the next cue card and continued, “Okay, before we reveal the roles and tasks, I’d like to introduce a brand new game mechanic.”
“This new mode is called, “Don’t Even Think About Finding Me!” In this storyline, each character has their own life, their own identity. But among them, one is secretly the Midnight Chainsaw Killer.”
“We don’t know who they are. We only know that in the past, they appeared in the dead of night, wielding a chainsaw, murdering person after person and even the police haven’t caught them.”
“This is a hidden identity. It will be randomly assigned once the episode officially begins.”
“The chosen person must hide the fact that they are the Chainsaw Killer and also complete a unique hidden mission.”
“Midnight Chainsaw Killer? What does that even mean? Someone explain, please.”
“It’s simple. After everyone gets their basic role and task, the show will randomly select one person to be the Chainsaw Killer.”
“Right, only the selected person will know. Not even us viewers with god-level perspective will find out until the episode ends.”
“What if Liang Wei gets picked? He can’t even handle the basic mission, how’s he gonna do a hidden one?”
“Please let it be Chen Shu. That identity sounds terrifying, he’s the only one who could do it justice.”
“Alright, Bingbing, enough with the intro. Hurry up and give us the role and mission breakdown already. We can’t wait!”
