“?” Wu Hong froze for a second, then barked out, “Are you seriously trying to get yourself yelled at again? Who the hell are you calling a foreign-worshipping bootlicker? I only admire Mr. Yamamoto from a professional standpoint! He’s a renowned detective from Japan, which is exactly why I invited him to assist the investigation team!”

Zhang Sheng nodded, mumbling to himself, “Yeah… real helpful, that was.”

Then Wu Hong paused to think and said, “Since the investigation team is getting a bit crowded, how about this, you assign Mr. Yamamoto the role of a criminal. Pair him up with his daughter. A powerhouse father-daughter duo.”

“Huh?” Zhang Sheng’s eyes lit up.

Now that was a brilliant idea!

In every episode so far, Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao had always acted as siblings leaning on each other and sticking together. In contrast, all the other criminals had been operating solo.

So for the next episode, if Yamamoto Yuu and Yamamoto Sakura teamed up as a father-daughter criminal duo to go up against the sibling duo of Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao, both sides being criminals, then wouldn’t Chen Shu’s team get completely crushed?

It was simple, aside from emotional support, what real help had Su Xiaoxiao given Chen Shu? You could already be thankful she wasn’t dragging him down. But a father-daughter pair? That was different.

Yamamoto Yuu was already a top-class detective with strong anti-investigation skills, and his daughter? She wasn’t a pushover either.

Just think, wouldn’t they completely steal the spotlight from Chen Shu?

And that’s not all. The next episode wouldn’t just feature a father-daughter duo and a sibling duo. There would be a third team.

The fan-favorite husband-and-wife duo, Liang Wei and his mysteriously resurrected wife!

Three duos, three battlefronts, three men, and three women.

“Holy hell, Director, this is why you’re the boss. You’re a freaking genius,” Zhang Sheng exclaimed, for once not sucking up, he genuinely meant it. That old fox on the other end of the line had truly earned his place. “With this setup, it’s going to be way harder for Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao to pull anything off. And the spotlight will definitely shift to Yamamoto and his daughter.”

Wu Hong replied, “Exactly. If the show keeps relying on Chen Shu to carry the buzz, it won’t last. So next episode, let’s do everything we can to make Yamamoto’s duo outshine the sibling pair. So in the meantime, tighten up the character arcs and mission structure.”

Zhang Sheng said eagerly, “Got it, Director. Leave it to us!”

Late June, just one week left before Episode 9 airs.

In Building 109 on the west side of the city, Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao were gnawing on lamb legs together.

Crunch, crunch.

“Ahahaha! I’m done!” Su Xiaoxiao waved her picked-clean bone in triumph and declared, “Whoever finishes last washes the dishes. That mountain of plates we’ve been ignoring for two days? They’re all yours now, Big Bro!”

Chen Shu gave her a deadpan look.

“Xiaoxiao, you’re supposed to be a big celebrity. It’s been nearly a month since the last episode and you’ve been hanging around my place ever since. Aren’t you busy? Do you even have a schedule? Is this how an idol works?”

“If your fans found out you’ve been slacking like this, wouldn’t they all unfollow you? Even a work mule would be embarrassed by how lazy you are.”

Su Xiaoxiao wiggled her index finger and said, “No, no, no. I actually got several offers this month. TV dramas, movie shoots you name it. But I turned them all down! They would’ve taken months of my time, and I might’ve missed the next episode of the show.”

“And besides, the pay wasn’t even that good! Shows like Inescapable Justice where you can get paid to basically lie down and chill? They’re rare these days!”

Chen Shu was speechless. This girl was ridiculously lucky.

At such a young age, she was already a top-tier celebrity and now she was getting paid handsomely for just lounging around in a reality show.

Life’s not fair.

“By the way, bro,” Su Xiaoxiao suddenly leaned closer, “Did you see the teaser the show released?”

Chen Shu nodded. “Yeah. The next episode takes place three years before ‘Say Hi to Your Sister-in-Law.'”

“Not that one,” she shook her head. “I mean the cast list. It includes you and me, obviously. Yamamoto and his daughter too, and Liang Wei is still there. But now, there’s one new person.”

Chen Shu hadn’t noticed that. “The new one… must be the actress playing Liang Wei’s wife?”

“Exactly.” Su Xiaoxiao nodded. “Her name’s An Jiayu. She’s in the same agency as me.”

Chen Shu raised a brow. “Wow… your agency’s really milking this show for all it’s worth, huh?”

“…” Su Xiaoxiao didn’t deny it. After hesitating for a moment, maybe because they’d gotten closer, she decided to tell the truth.

“Actually, a few months ago, our agency offered two jobs, one to be in Inescapable Justice, and the other to star in a film. They originally wanted me to do the film and let her take the show.”

Chen Shu was surprised. “Was the company planning to use the show’s buzz to make her famous?”

“No,” Su Xiaoxiao shook her head. “At the time, the show was popular, sure, but not this popular. And for a female celeb to join a crime-themed show? It would’ve ruined her public image. She didn’t want to do it. I don’t know what strings she pulled, but she convinced the agency to switch our assignments.”

“So that’s how I ended up in the show. But now, she’s jealous, because not only did I keep my image intact, I made easy money, and I even got a brother like you who spoils me rotten. She’s furious.”

“So now she wants in too.”

Hearing all this insider drama, Chen Shu finally understood. An Jiayu sounded like a serious schemer.

“Bro,” Su Xiaoxiao puffed up her cheeks, looking all serious. “This time, I’m going all in. I want to be just like you, ruthless and unstoppable!”

Chen Shu, “?”

Su Xiaoxiao. “??”

Chen Shu, “I just finished eating, don’t make me laugh.”

Su Xiaoxiao, “I mean it! Don’t be fooled by how lazy I am, I’ve learned a lot from you these past few months. I’m gonna kill An Jiayu!”

Chen Shu leaned back in his chair, his little sister was finally showing her fangs. So he asked, “Okay then. What’s your plan to take her out?”

Su Xiaoxiao answered immediately, “First, I’ll prep a hammer. Then, when I catch An Jiayu alone, BAM! I’ll take her out. After that, I’ll kill Liang Wei too. He’s a clown, easy pickings. I’ll skip the details.”

“Once they’re both dead, I’ll swap their bodies. So when the cops arrive and do an autopsy, Qin Min the forensic guy will be completely baffled. He’ll think An Jiayu was secretly a drag queen. Ahahahaha!”

“I’m dying over here.”

Chen Shu, “Absolutely diabolical.”
