- Chapter 16 - A Witness? Then Let's Interrogate!
Su Haoran walked out of Su Xiaoxiao’s interrogation room. He knew that all of her testimony had been dictated by Chen Shu.
Not a single loophole!
This made him take this “amateur” more seriously. Normally, if someone was lying, he could tell no matter how good their acting was. But this time, he couldn’t see any trace of performance in Su Xiaoxiao’s words.
When she described what happened on April 2nd, she was logical, confident, and flawless!
Creak.
At that moment, the interrogation room next door also opened, and Qin Min walked out, standing beside him.
“How’s Su Xiaoxiao holding up?” Qin Min asked.
“She’s just a puppet. That amateur must have told her exactly what to say and what not to say. There’s nothing to dig out of her,” Su Haoran shrugged. “But that’s fine. This case was never about her, she’s just a side character. Our focus should be on that amateur.”
“Tsk,” Qin Min sighed. “Even Captain Wang couldn’t get anything out of Chen Shu. The guy’s too composed, and his words are airtight. Looks like he made full use of those two days the show gave him to prepare.”
Meanwhile, the live chat was going crazy, spamming the investigation team with messages.
“You guys got the timeline wrong! April 2nd definitely wasn’t Liu Liang’s time of death. Go back and check your facts!”
“Exactly! They were out having fun on April 2nd. How could they have committed the crime?”
“What’s going on here??”
“The investigation team got cocky. They underestimated the amateur, so now they’re making mistakes.”
Just then, the heavy metal door of the interrogation room swung open again. Wang Zheng stepped out, leaning against the wall with them.
“This Chen Shu is trickier than I expected,” Wang Zheng grinned, then turned to Su Haoran. “He says he was in Jinfu Village on April 2nd. Su Haoran, go to the surveillance bureau and check the footage, was he really there?”
“I already called them,” Su Haoran said.
“And?” Wang Zheng asked.
Su Haoran frowned. “Jinfu Village is too remote. It’s only recently become a popular tourist spot, so there’s no surveillance inside the village only on the highway leading there. And the rural buses don’t require real-name ticket purchases, so we can’t confirm whether the siblings actually went there that day.”
Hearing this, Wang Zheng’s brows twitched slightly, lost in thought.
After a long moment, he suddenly chuckled. “Ha! Looks like we really didn’t take that amateur seriously enough. He deliberately chose a place without surveillance. Interesting. This was supposed to be an easy case, but he just raised the difficulty level for us.”
Qin Min had a sudden realization. “Right? Why would two siblings go see rapeseed flowers? That’s something couples do! He must’ve chosen that spot on purpose.”
“Yeah, this Chen Shu… he’s not simple at all,” Wang Zheng took a sip from his tea flask.
“He’s too confident, so confident that I’m starting to wonder if we actually got the wrong guy. And it’s not just him, he even made Su Xiaoxiao that confident in just two days.”
Qin Min quickly asked, “Captain, what do we do now? We’re not seriously letting him go, are we?”
“Of course not,” Wang Zheng shook his head. “Since he claims to have witnesses, fine. Qin Min, take some men and bring every single one of those witnesses here.”
“Captain, if there’s no surveillance proof that he was in Jinfu Village, those so-called witnesses are definitely bribed. We won’t get anything useful from them,” Qin Min said.
Wang Zheng capped his flask and his gaze sharpened. “He made a big mistake.”
“Oh?” Qin Min looked puzzled.
“When we interrogated him, he deliberately named a bunch of witnesses. Why? Because he wants us to question them, right?” Wang Zheng saw through Chen Shu’s intentions.
Qin Min nodded. “That makes sense.”
“The more witnesses there are, the harder it is to make sure their statements match perfectly. If he only had one or two, maybe we wouldn’t catch anything. But the more people we question, the more likely they’ll slip up,” Wang Zheng explained. “Go now. We have to solve this case tonight.”
“Got it!” Qin Min immediately set out. Then, Wang Zheng turned to Su Haoran, who had been silent this whole time. “Haoran, why aren’t you saying anything?”
“I think we’re going in the wrong direction,” Su Haoran frowned. “Chen Shu was fully prepared for our interrogation. He’s meticulous, and we won’t find his flaws just by questioning him.”
“So, what’s your plan?” Wang Zheng asked.
Su Haoran stretched his stiff neck and said, “Captain, you stay here and continue interrogating him. I’ll take a team to search his house. When I was there earlier, I took a good look, if they really killed Liu Liang, the body can’t be far from their home.”
“Maybe it’s buried in their yard.”
“If we find the body, no amount of preparation will save him.” With that, Su Haoran left.
At 10 PM that night, Su Haoran got approval for a search warrant. He took ten officers and a few police dogs and headed for Chen Shu’s house.
Meanwhile, the live chat exploded again.
“They messed up the timeline, but at least they’re still professional. Su Haoran’s right, interrogating Chen Shu won’t get them anywhere. They need to find the body!”
“Su Haoran’s instincts are insane. I really thought Chen Shu could last a few more days, but the investigation team is more competent than we expected.”
“The body’s definitely buried in the backyard. We all know that.”
“Wang Zheng interrogates the witnesses, Su Haoran searches for the body, dual attack strategy. Chen Shu has no breathing room now.”
“It’s over. Time for Liang Wei to step in!”
In a hotel room, Liang Wei was watching the livestream.
After seeing everything unfold, he started questioning the investigation team’s competence. He couldn’t believe they had actually messed up Liu Liang’s time of death and conveniently, it overlapped with Chen Shu’s trip, giving him a perfect alibi.
“April 2nd?”
“Chen Shu and Su Xiaoxiao were out of town?”
“Then what was I doing that day?”
Bored, Liang Wei tried to recall, but his memory was hazy.
“I remember April 2nd was when the show started airing. If they were part of the show, how did they have time to go on a trip?”
“Huh?” Liang Wei felt like he had stumbled onto something. But his head was foggy, and he was feeling lightheaded. He grabbed his phone, lay down on the couch, and continued watching the livestream.
Right then, the camera zoomed in on Chen Shu, sitting in the interrogation room. His face was partially hidden in the shadows, his gaze piercing through the screen, as if staring directly into the eyes of every viewer.
“Hmm… I must be remembering wrong. He and Su Xiaoxiao were out of town on April 2nd.”
