- Chapter 137 - Back in the Game—I'll Take It All
“Xiaoxiao!” Chen Shu’s frantic cry pierced the night sky. He rushed to the window, panicked, and looked down helplessly.
Two bodies lay sprawled on the ground below.
Blood gushed from their heads like blooming flowers, quickly soaking the ground beneath them. Even in death, Su Xiaoxiao’s hand was still tightly gripping Yamamoto Sakura’s hair. With all her strength, she had staged the scene to look like a struggle that ended in an accidental fall.
This was her way of helping her brother shoulder the blame.
The whole scene unfolded so abruptly that even the livestream audience was stunned into silence for a long moment. Then, like a dam breaking, the comment section exploded.
“I was wrong about Xiaoxiao, she didn’t betray Chen Shu!”
“It’s all Liang Wei’s fault. He just had to scare her. She’s so naïve and clueless, she really thought something had happened to her brother.”
“Exactly. From Su Xiaoxiao’s perspective, hearing Liang Wei say her brother’s plan had failed and he was going to die… of course she panicked. And she couldn’t help in any other way, reporting to the police was all she could do.”
“Chen Shu tried to kill Sakura to get the bone marrow to save Su Xiaoxiao, and now Su Xiaoxiao, in turn, has taken the blame through death to protect her brother. In their own ways, they’re both expressing love for each other.”
“What a heartbreaking bond between siblings.”
“Damn it, give me back my Xiaoxiao!”
All the previous comments bashing Su Xiaoxiao as a burden and a saboteur of Chen Shu vanished without a trace. Yes, she had called the police, but it wasn’t betrayal.
She had simply been misled by Liang Wei’s words and feared for her brother’s life. That was it. She never imagined that her good intentions would lead to disaster, dragging Chen Shu into the abyss. So, in her final moments, she did the only thing she could for her brother. To take the fall.
Protect him at all costs.
Meanwhile, in the director’s room, Zhang Sheng collapsed again.
Yamamoto Sakura was dead, which meant this season’s god-making campaign had completely failed.
Ring, ring. The phone on the desk rang. Zhang Sheng already knew what was coming, another verbal lashing. Sure enough, the moment he picked up, Director Wu Hong’s voice thundered through the line
“Zhang Sheng, what the hell were you thinking? Who designed this damn character mission? Why did the sister have to do something for the brother? Now, look what happened!”
“Su Xiaoxiao took the mission literally and died to protect Chen Shu! And Chen Shu? He’s completely off the hook. This storyline feels all too familiar!”
Zhang Sheng said innocently, “Director, yelling at me won’t help. You approved the character mission during the script review. You said it was fine.”
Wu Hong snapped, “And just because I said it was fine, it is fine?”
Zhang Sheng replied with a cheeky, “Yup!”
“You little—” Wu Hong growled. “Forget it. I’m too tired to even scold you anymore. You’re immune to my wrath at this point. Let’s just focus on figuring out what the hell we do next.”
Zhang Sheng thought for a moment, then said, “Director, I don’t think it’s all bad. Even though Su Xiaoxiao took the blame, I believe the detective team might still pick up on something. Besides, Yamamoto Yuu has joined this episode.”
Wu Hong grumbled, “Clues? What clues? The mess in the office could easily be explained as the result of a struggle between Su Xiaoxiao and Yamamoto Sakura. The shovel that killed Sakura has no fingerprints, it’s clean. Chen Shu was wearing gloves the whole time.”
“Everything points away from him. The cops are more likely to suspect Liang Wei than Chen Shu at this point.”
“That’s true,” Zhang Sheng sighed. But then his eyes lit up. “Wait, Director, don’t forget, Chen Shu’s mission was to get the bone marrow. Now that the police are here, there’s no chance he can harvest it from Sakura. So even if he isn’t convicted, he can’t complete the mission.”
“In the end, he still fails. His sister took the blame, yes, but if he doesn’t accomplish the mission, it’s not a perfect crime.”
Wu Hong paused, then nodded. “You’re right. The police came too fast, Chen Shu didn’t have time to extract the bone marrow and now he won’t get another chance.”
“If he can’t get the bone marrow, the mission is a failure.”
The two continued to discuss the implications. Then, after hanging up, they refocused on the livestream feed.
Back in the livestream, Chen Shu was leaning over the windowsill, staring down at the bodies below with a dazed expression.
Step, step. Footsteps echoed closer from the hallway, Chen Shu stepped away from the window. He pulled off his gloves and stuffed them into his pocket.
Then he bent down and picked up the shovel that had been used to kill Yamamoto Sakura.
He gripped it several times, almost deliberately, as if to leave fingerprints on it. Finally, he stashed the shovel under a desk.
Viewers were baffled.
“Wait, what is Chen Shu doing?”
“Su Xiaoxiao already took the fall for him. If he leaves fingerprints on the shovel now, won’t the police suspect him again?”
“Exactly! He’s not that dumb. Otherwise, why bother wearing gloves before?”
“Oh, I get it now. Chen Shu saw Su Xiaoxiao die, and now he doesn’t want to live either. He’s ready to turn himself in.”
“What kind of move is this?”
“Su Xiaoxiao died to give him a chance to survive, and now he’s just throwing it away? Then again… it makes sense. Every crime he committed was for her. She may not have helped him much, but she was always there. Without her, maybe he doesn’t want to go on either.”
“Besides, now that the police are here, there’s no way he can get the bone marrow anyway.”
No one could understand Chen Shu’s actions.
He had a clean escape, why incriminate himself now? Was he afraid the police wouldn’t catch him? Wouldn’t that make Su Xiaoxiao’s death meaningless?
After stashing the now-tainted shovel, Chen Shu stood up and opened the door. Immediately, police officers flanked both ends of the corridor. Chen Shu took a deep breath.
His eyes blazed with fury.
“The plan was disrupted. It wasn’t Xiaoxiao’s fault, it was Liang Wei’s! And now that the police are here, I’ve lost my chance at the bone marrow.”
“I won’t let my sister die for nothing.”
“In that case…”
Chen Shu clenched his fists, steeling himself.
“I’ll throw myself back into the game.”
“Liang Wei’s life, Sakura’s marrow, I’ll take it all!”
