Chapter 69: Safety First
***
Last night, Wang Wenqi, who was supposed to track Liu Haoyu, followed him to the hospital but then lost his trail.
After searching without results, the police officer came to the folk customs store.
Looking at the white-haired elderly man before him, Wang Wenqi spoke.
“Old Deng, it’s been a while.”
“Special Investigation Team?” Old Deng frowned at the man before him: “What’s the matter?”
Wang Wenqi had great respect for Old Deng and gave a slight bow.
“There’s no need to be so hostile towards us, Old Deng.”
“Hmph.”
In response to Wang Wenqi’s words, Old Deng immediately snorted coldly.
“Of course I won’t be hostile to you, you’re heroes serving the country and the people.”
Though these were Old Deng’s words, his tone suggested otherwise.
“If you have something to say, say it quickly. If not, please leave.”
Seeing Old Deng’s unfriendliness, Wang Wenqi could only sigh helplessly and said.
“About the incident back then, I’m truly sorry.”
“Let me ask you, if your son was betrayed by his teammates and died at the hands of evil spirits, I just want to ask if you could still remain calm.”
“Back then… sigh~”
Wang Wenqi didn’t know how to explain.
Old Deng’s son — Deng Wenping, was also a member of the Special Investigation Team when he was alive.
During one mission, to ensure his teammates’ safety, he voluntarily chose to stay behind and face the attacks from evil ghosts alone.
However, when reinforcements arrived, everyone discovered…
During that one minute waiting for reinforcements, if someone had actively gone back to get Deng Wenping, perhaps he wouldn’t have died just 10 meters from the exit.
This incident was precisely why Old Deng harbored such great dissatisfaction with the Special Investigation Team.
And this matter was indeed the Special Investigation Team’s fault, leaving Wang Wenqi unable to give Old Deng a proper explanation.
“The Special Investigation Team has recently discovered multiple supernatural incidents in Jiangliu City, so we wanted to ask if Old Deng has any insights.”
“I’ve long since quit being an exorcist, what use is there in asking me about these things?”
Old Deng’s words made Wang Wenqi a bit embarrassed, but this police officer’s skin was quite thick, and after coughing once, he continued.
“Even if you resent and hate us, Old Deng, for the sake of our fellow citizens and people, we can’t just stand by and watch, can we?”
“You people just love to use this approach to bother others.”
Old Deng snorted, but he still spoke.
“If there really have been many supernatural incidents, it’s likely related to that haunted house in the suburbs.”
“That haunted house?” Wang Wenqi’s expression was somewhat surprised: “Hasn’t it been sealed by you?”
“So many years have passed, even the most secure seal will develop problems.”
Old Deng took a puff of his cigarette.
“The grievance energy in that place can even pollute the earth’s veins, its danger goes without saying, so I’ll advise you as well, if something really goes wrong there, you won’t be able to handle it. Go there and you’ll die.”
Faced with Old Deng’s warning, Wang Wenqi responded with a righteous expression.
“If something really serious happens, I’m willing to sacrifice heroically and gloriously at my post, just like your son.”
“Your wife and children wouldn’t be happy with you having such thoughts,” Old Deng glanced at Wang Wenqi and said: “Don’t die.”

Shortly after Wang Wenqi left, Liu Haoyu walked into the folk customs store.
When Old Deng saw Liu Haoyu, his eyebrows lifted with joy, showing an almost completely opposite expression from when he spoke with Wang Wenqi.
The elderly man looked at Liu Haoyu and said.
“Lately that girl Xiaolin seems to be in a bad mood, do you have any idea why?”
Faced with this question, Liu Haoyu couldn’t help but laugh.
“It feels like nothing can be hidden from you.”
“That’s not it, I’ve watched you two kids grow up since you were little, how could I not guess what’s on your minds.”
Old Deng took a puff of his cigarette and said.
“By the way, there’s a strong grievance energy around you, just got back from work?”
“Yes… Old Deng, you’re aware that Jiangliu City hasn’t been very peaceful lately.”
Liu Haoyu spoke very calmly with the old man, but hearing these words, Old Deng’s hand froze in mid-air.
“Be careful, although you might feel you have nothing to lose, there are always people who care about your safety… that girl who’s been peeking is one of them.”
“Grandpa!!”
Deng Xiaolin, who had only intended to peek, could no longer contain herself and spoke.
“I was just passing by!”
“By passing by, do you mean peeking through the door crack for 3 minutes?”
Old Deng exposed her without hesitation, making Deng Xiaolin’s entire face turn red, after which the young girl quickly fled back into the inner room.
After exposing Deng Xiaolin’s pretense, Old Deng said.
“Go comfort that little girl first, she’s really been in low spirits lately.”
“I understand.”
Liu Haoyu stood up, preparing to walk towards the inner room, but at this moment Old Deng spoke leisurely.
“Xiao Liu, although your strength is outstanding among exorcists, when facing supernatural events, this level of power is far from enough. Judging from the concentration of grievance energy on you, you must have just experienced a fierce battle.
Next time… don’t risk your life like this. If you can’t win or aren’t sure you can win, run away quickly.”
Old Deng’s words brought a warmth to Liu Haoyu’s heart, and he nodded, saying.
“I will keep Old Deng’s advice firmly in mind.”
After speaking, Liu Haoyu walked into the inner room.
The elderly man watched his departing figure and slowly exhaled a thick cloud of smoke.
Liu Haoyu didn’t know about the Special Investigation Team, and Old Deng wouldn’t actively introduce Liu Haoyu to this organization.
Although Liu Haoyu’s strength far exceeded ordinary exorcists, as mentioned before, when facing supernatural events, even the strongest exorcist would have moments of powerlessness.
And as an organization fighting against the supernatural, the Special Investigation Team had an extremely high casualty rate.
Even with excellent equipment and experienced personnel, they were simply not enough when facing major supernatural events.
Fortunately, supernatural events of that scale weren’t common, and many supernatural incidents weren’t too difficult to handle, otherwise the Special Investigation Team might not be able to cope at all.
Even so, the Special Investigation Team’s nature in the country was almost the same as that of narcotics officers.
They were all people most worthy of respect, but… they were also people in the most dangerous situations.
But for Old Deng, Liu Haoyu was practically family.
Most elders wouldn’t want their children to walk the most dangerous path.
Nor would they want to see white-haired people sending off black-haired ones.
Everyone has selfish thoughts, and Old Deng was no exception.
The elderly man looked towards the inner room, his mumbling voice carrying a hint of worry.
“These recent supernatural events… could it be that the seal on that red door has developed problems?”
