How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 428
Zhan Lian lands hard—but the water zombie vanishes. All that remains on the ground is a rippling puddle, with several fat thorn balls floating on its surface. The water surges, and the thorn balls drift steadily toward the stairs.
“It’s going upstairs!”
An Ran immediately senses it. She feels it through her connection to the fat thorn balls. They’re not moving on their own—the water zombie they’re absorbing is dragging them up the steps!
“Feifan!” Zhan Lian shouts and springs into action.
He leaps onto the stairs, gripping two knives, crouched low, and stabs rapidly into the flowing water with lightning-fast jabs—but it’s no use. Water has no form, no shape to strike.
Luo Feifan follows with a blazing fireball. It does little more than scorch the fat thorn balls and boil some of the water into steam. They can’t stop it.
Zhan Lian has no choice but to fall back as the puddle flows up the stairs and slowly reforms into the shape of a zombie.
Then, desperate, he grabs an iron basket and slams it down over the recondensing zombie—trapping it. He presses down, forcing the creature into a compact, cube-shaped box.
It’s a last-ditch effort, a desperate idea made in the heat of battle—yet somehow, it works.
The water zombie that no one has been able to kill is now sealed inside a small iron box, unable to escape.
From where they stand, An Ran and Zhao Ru finally exhale in relief. They watch as Zhan Lian carefully places the iron box on the ground. Just as they’re about to approach for a closer look—
The box begins to swell.
Something inside expands. The thick iron surface groans and bulges—and then bursts.
A tiny hole cracks open in the side, and a stream of water trickles out.
It’s clear now: this box can’t have even the smallest gap. If it does, the water will seep through—and that alone is enough to cause chaos all over again.
An Ran quickly pulls Zhao Ru back, but the water already coils around Zhao Ru’s feet. She looks down and lets out a scream. Her face goes pale—
Then suddenly, the water stops.
It stills in place, no longer seeping out of the box. Zhao Ru is controlling it.
An Ran hurriedly summons the fat thorn balls to absorb the water. Zhan Lian clamps down on the damaged box again, while Luo Feifan tosses another fireball at it—but none of their powers compare to Zhao Ru’s.
She’s a water-type Ability User, and no one can rival her in controlling water.
“What now?” Zhao Ru’s eyes widen as she stares at the puddle she’s holding in place. She looks like someone who’s just climbed out of a pool, soaked in stress. As a water-type user, her entire existence is tied to water—yet even she can barely contain this thing.
An Ran stands frozen beside her, unsure what to do. She looks to Zhan Lian.
Zhan Lian looks at Luo Feifan.
Luo Feifan shrugs, gives it a moment’s thought, then flashes Zhao Ru a smile.
“Looks like this one’s all you, Miss Zhao. Just hold tight. We’ll head out, finish off the copper-skinned zombies outside, and come back with a real plan.”
They’ve got internal chaos and external danger.
If they don’t move fast, Yun Tao, Liang Ziyu, and Wang Wei—who are still guarding the gate—will be torn apart by the copper-skinned zombies.
Without further delay, Zhan Lian and Luo Feifan dash out the door, leaving Zhao Ru to hold the line inside.
She doesn’t dare move.
Moments pass. Then she calls out to An Ran in a strained voice:
“Give me a crystal core—quick! I can’t hold it much longer!”
