How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 416
Later, when his wife is around, Zhan Lian treats the box of crystal cores like his salary card and gives it to An Ran for safekeeping. At that time, An Ran isn’t in the mood to care much about his box full of crystal cores, since she already has plenty of her own.
Sometimes when she has too many, An Ran even puts some of her own cores into the box. Little Mint’s crystal cores, taken remotely, also go in there.
Now, at this critical moment, it’s time to use those crystal cores. An Ran doesn’t bother being polite with Zhan Lian; she just wants the box, mainly the copper-skinned zombie crystal cores inside.
Almost all the copper-skinned zombie crystal cores come from Zhan Lian, and there are quite a few. Zhan Lian absorbs them before, but unlike An Ran, he doesn’t feel any pain. Apart from feeling stronger and able to throw more flying knives, he doesn’t experience the suffering An Ran does.
So without hesitation, Zhan Lian takes the box, goes up to the second floor, and places it at An Ran’s feet.
“Okay, go ahead. Don’t worry about us!” An Ran waves him off, afraid he might notice something is wrong.
Zhan Lian stands still, staring at An Ran’s pale face with his dark eyes, and asks, “Why do you look so pale?”
An Ran rolls her eyes and replies, “There are so many rats. Which woman wouldn’t turn pale seeing them?” She then walks forward and gently pushes him toward the stairs. “Don’t dawdle. If you wait any longer, Luo Feifan and the others outside won’t be able to hold on.”
Hearing that Luo Feifan and the others might be overwhelmed, Zhan Lian feels the urge to leave. But still looking worriedly at An Ran, he says, “I’m outside. Call me if there’s any problem. If you really can’t stand the rats in here, just leave it to me. I’ll come in and kill them.”
“Alright, alright, go already.” An Ran urges, pushing him down the stairs. Seeing he still looks worried, she smiles at him again. “I’m the kind of person who’s super careful about her life. If I just cut my little finger while chopping, I’d cry for half a day. If something’s wrong, I won’t force myself.”
Yes, that’s how she is. Before the end of the world, she’s the kind of woman who screams at the sight of a cockroach.
Zhan Lian takes a few steps down, frowns, looks back at An Ran, and says, “I’m right at the main gate. Call me anytime, I’ll come in immediately.”
“Alright, alright, you’re so nagging,” An Ran says with a smile from the top step.
An Ran stands on the highest step, looking down and smiling at Zhan Lian. Behind her, Doll taps on the baby rocker with her hands.
Despite the apocalypse making life a complete mess, An Ran’s heart feels warm—she doesn’t feel cold.
Zhan Lian, still doubtful in his heart, glances at An Ran a few more times. Then he turns and walks toward the main door—but doesn’t go far.
He stands there at the door, watching the fat thorn balls rolling on the ground and listening to the sounds from the second floor. He raises his hand to support Luo Feifan and the others outside.
A few large rats come in from the side door. Zhan Lian sees the fat thorn balls on the ground handle the threat, and there are no unusual sounds upstairs.
Slowly, he calms down and focuses the defense on the main door, thinking of leaving the side door open and letting some rats in to help An Ran train her ability.
Of course, Zhan Lian isn’t stupid. Since reuniting with his wife, every little detail about An Ran is deeply etched in his mind. Overnight, the bathroom walls become covered in climbing vines. Along the way, the plants that can “eat” ordinary zombies, as well as An Ran’s absorption speed of crystal cores… and that gives him some reassurance.
