How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 376
“Sister, I want to go out and pick up crystal cores.” Little Mint lifts her eyelids, her face slightly flushed, and looks at An Ran’s wet eyes. She asks, “Do you have any crystal cores to use?”
“Don’t worry about that. It’s time for you to get some good rest now.”
An Ran reaches out and touches Little Mint’s forehead—it’s a little hot. She frowns. Although her mood is heavy, her face doesn’t show it. She fastens Little Mint’s seat belt, hugs her, and says in a thick, nasal voice, “Whatever you want to eat, whatever you want to drink, I’ll find it for you. No matter what it is, I’ll bring it to you. Come here and talk to me more.”
The hot-faced Little Mint shakes her head weakly and says softly, “I just want a good knife, so it’ll be easier to dig crystal cores. Sister, I want to dig crystal cores.”
“Okay, let’s go. When you get better, I’ll kill many zombies so you can dig lots of crystal cores.” An Ran chokes up.
Doll behind her sits on the driver’s seat curiously, raising her hands and kicking her legs, humming and making soft noises. She seems very happy to sit there and doesn’t understand the heavy atmosphere in the car at all.
After a while, another group of people runs over from the front of the convoy. Zhang Boxun leads them—it seems they’re going to deal with the troubles in Tiesi Village. He takes over the work of Zhan Lian and Luo Feifan and stands by a pile of fire, talking to Luo Feifan.
Yun Tao and Zhan Lian come back. An Ran gets off the vehicle holding Doll and whispers to Yun Tao, “Little Mint has a fever.”
“Okay, I know.” Yun Tao looks solemn, brushes An Ran’s shoulder, gets into the driver’s seat, lowers his head, props the door with one hand, and says to An Ran beside the car, “Take Doll away. I’ll keep watch here.”
An Ran shakes her head, tears of reluctance in her eyes, but she tries not to let them fall. She raises her head slightly and looks at Yun Tao. The despair in her heart slowly erodes her from within.
She can’t bear to let go. In these end times, she’s seen many people with fevers turn into zombies. Now that Little Mint has a fever too, An Ran’s despair runs even deeper and more turbulent than when she saw Liu Yuan turn into a zombie.
God is so cruel. Little Mint’s fate is already miserable enough—why won’t He just let her go?
“An Ran!” Yun Tao leans out from the driver’s seat, looking down at her with a serious expression. “You have to be stronger. Don’t be so fragile. In the future, more people will leave you—maybe me, maybe Hengheng, or even Doll. If you’re not strong, how can you survive this doomsday road?”
Before Yun Tao finishes speaking, An Ran turns and runs away, holding Doll tightly. She doesn’t want to hear these words—she’s afraid to hear them!
Zhan Lian silently follows behind her, watching her slender back carrying the chubby baby as she walks on bravely. Her back faces him, and though she says nothing, her posture is full of sorrow.
Sadness mixed with loneliness.
Zhan Lian reaches out and grabs An Ran’s arm. She stops, and so does he.
After a while, An Ran turns back and looks at Zhan Lian with red eyes. A tear slips down her cheek.
“Don’t cry,” he says, unable to bear it. He reaches out and wipes the tears from her face. “I’m still here. I’m here, and I won’t leave again.”
