How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 375
One of the men, holding his injured head, says to the fat man, “I’m telling you, Fat Bro, the third guy probably won’t make it back, but he won’t die right away either. If he snitches on us—”
The fat man raises his hand to silence him. Still angry, he sits back in the trunk, clenching his fists and resting them on his thighs. After thinking for a long moment, he says, “If the third guy does come back, he’ll have a broken arm too. That’s good—we’ve been needing people like that lately. You all behave from now on. Send the old folks and kids back to Tang Siluo’s place, and make sure they keep their mouths shut. If Tang Siluo asks, just say they left on their own. It’s got nothing to do with us.”
Then the fat man looks angrily at the subordinates standing before him.
“You should get out of here quickly. Don’t show your faces again, or Zhan Lian will catch you and you’ll lose your lives!”
The subordinates nod as if they’ve been pardoned and scatter away.
An Ran is talking with Zhan Lian when Tang Siluo comes over again.
She has just finished handling the children and elderly when she hurries toward them. She looks at An Ran and Zhan Lian and greets politely, “Brother Lian, sister-in-law.”
An Ran tilts her head and ignores Tang Siluo. Tang Siluo doesn’t mind. Her attention is now on Luo Feifan, who is setting fire to the rats at the far end of the team.
She asks Zhan Lian, “Brother Lian, aren’t you going to help Brother Feifan? Can he handle it alone?”
“Don’t worry, he loves playing with fire the most,” Zhan Lian says casually.
Zhan Lian shows little interest in Tang Siluo’s tone. Holding the baby, he drops that line and leads An Ran away, heading straight back near the truck. He says seriously to An Ran, “I’m going to guard the rear of the convoy. If anything happens, just shout. I won’t be far away, I promise. I’ll be right by your side. No matter what, call me and I’ll come.”
This is a very long convoy, jammed full of survivors along a national highway. Zhan Lian and An Ran want to head around Xiangcheng and go north, but they’re stuck here, unable to move.
It’s still unclear what Tang Jianjun’s plan is. Will he send people back to attack Tiesi Village, or will he take so many survivors north following Zhan Lian’s idea? Zhan Lian has no idea what he’s thinking.
Their vehicle can’t move forward or backward, so they can only defend the rear of the team and keep the rats from rushing in. Fortunately, the rats can also serve as food for the copper-skinned zombies. They’re probably feasting in the village right now, so not many rats come out.
Zhan Lian and Luo Feifan are more than enough to handle the situation.
An Ran nods, takes Doll, and tells Zhan Lian to be careful. She watches as he joins Luo Feifan to hunt the rats. Then she climbs onto the truck and checks on Little Mint.
Little Mint looks pale as paper, lying on the truck’s seat. Zhao Ru has hung an IV drip on her hand and comes to check on her regularly to monitor her condition.
Night is approaching again, and the air is a little cold. The weather feels unstable. It was hot not long ago, but now people are wearing long sleeves and pants.
An Ran places Doll—a small chunk of warmth—on the driver’s seat, sits back in the chair, opens the truck door from the cockpit, and finds a large plastic storage box inside.
She pulls out a few coats and sweatpants, gives one to Hengheng, puts one on herself, and finds a thin blanket to cover Little Mint.
