How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 248
Just as I’m thinking about hiding my weakness, a car horn blares outside the motel, attracting a street full of zombies.
Yun Tao and Anran’s faces change. They both walk to the window on the motel’s first floor. On the second floor, Little Mint, holding Hengheng, also hurries downstairs and stands behind Yun Tao and Anran.
“It’s that Lei Jiang from yesterday!” Yun Tao frowns slightly as he looks outside.
Lei Jiang’s group arrives in at least five or six vehicles, and several power users step out from each car. The zombies swarm toward these power users while Lei Jiang exits his vehicle with another man following him. This man is carrying two bags of supplies, and together they head toward the motel.
The zombies lingering near the motel have clearly been drawn away by Lei Jiang’s men. Lei Jiang smiles, nods at Yun Tao through the window, and then sets his eyes on Anran, who is holding the child beside Yun Tao.
Feeling Lei Jiang’s gaze, Anran shivers involuntarily. She takes a step back, turns around with Doll in her arms, reaches out to pull Little Mint, and Little Mint grabs Hengheng’s hand. The three children hurry upstairs to the second floor.
Just as Anran rounds the corner of the stairs, she hears Lei Jiang enter the motel behind her, calling Yun Tao “Brother, brother!”
Yun Tao responds just as enthusiastically, affectionately calling Lei Jiang “Captain.” The two of them act like long-lost brothers, laying the flattery on thick.
“The one upstairs… could that be my sister-in-law?” Lei Jiang grins, sets down the supplies in his hands, pulls out a chair, and plops down. Laughing again, he says, “I’ll just make myself comfortable here, hahaha, don’t mind me.”
Yun Tao chuckles. “Make yourself at home, no need for formalities. Food’s getting scarcer these days — it’s all thanks to the captain’s generosity.”
Yun Tao deliberately ignores Lei Jiang’s mention of “sister-in-law.”
Listening to their conversation from upstairs, Anran considers stepping out to clarify things but decides against it. Maybe it isn’t a bad thing if people misunderstand. A woman with a child and a man like Yun Tao beside her could deter some unwanted attention.
Although… some men wouldn’t care whether a woman had a man or not when they set their minds on doing evil.
Moments later, Anran overhears Lei Jiang downstairs trying to persuade Yun Tao to join his survivor team. He warns that zombies are growing in number and evolving rapidly, and that surviving alone in this apocalypse is becoming increasingly difficult — especially since Yun Tao now has a family to protect.
Yun Tao has lived long enough to know how to read between the lines. The ways of the world have made him perceptive. As he continues exchanging pleasantries with Lei Jiang, his eyes linger on the supplies Lei Jiang has placed on the table — all food. Giving away such valuable resources just to win over someone with powers seems excessive.
Seeing Yun Tao maintain his casual smile, Lei Jiang doesn’t rush things. Spotting the map on the table, he casually moves the supplies off it, places them on the floor, and sighs as he studies the map.
“Brother, are you interested in this map too?” Lei Jiang asks. “Lately, a lot of survivors in remote areas have been receiving broadcasts from northern Hubei. I noticed the zombie migration patterns this morning — many survivors heading north are stirring up the zombies in Xiangcheng, driving them northward. Brother,” Lei Jiang adds with a smile, “are you and my sister-in-law also planning to head to northern Hubei?”
