How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 246
“Alright, at least you all didn’t get wiped out.” Lei Jiang glances at his subordinates — all looking pitiful with bruised faces and swollen noses. He sneers with disdain, still playing with the green leaf in his hand, and says casually, “That person must have left by now. Whatever, let them go. I have something more important for you to do. Pick a few men right away and go keep an eye on someone for me.”
“Who?” A subordinate with two black eyes steps forward curiously. Seeing that Lei Jiang seems lost in thought, the man asks again, “Captain, who do you want us to watch?”
“A woman.” Lei Jiang frowns slightly.
Seeing the suggestive looks on his subordinates’ faces, he knows exactly what filthy thoughts they’re having. He waves his hand dismissively, places the leaf on the table, and points to a subordinate with a serious expression.
“Zhou Xiang, you go. Take two others with you, and be careful.”
Zhou Xiang nods calmly in response.
To be honest, Lei Jiang doesn’t want to tell his subordinates about the whereabouts of the “mobile granary.” In the end times, you have to be wary of everyone — even your own men. If the subordinates sent to monitor the mobile granary end up kidnapping her and running off, Lei Jiang will suffer a major loss.
So he only gives his subordinates half the story. He tells Zhou Xiang that he has discovered a capable man named Yun Tao, who is stronger than most of them, currently resting at a motel on the next street. Lei Jiang claims he wants to recruit Yun Tao and orders a few men to keep watch on him.
The reason Lei Jiang chooses Zhou Xiang is that Zhou Xiang is one of the few relatively decent men among those Lei Jiang has saved.
Not all survivors lose their humanity in the apocalypse. A person’s true nature only reveals itself in moments of crisis. Zhou Xiang has been with Lei Jiang for a long time, and unlike the others, he has never forced himself on a woman. The few men who are close to Zhou Xiang are similarly able to control themselves.
Since the “mobile granary” is a woman, Lei Jiang fears that if he sends anyone else, they might resort to violence the moment they spot her. Yun Tao is undoubtedly stronger than any of Lei Jiang’s power users — Lei Jiang can sense that.
After giving his orders, Lei Jiang begins to count the supplies. He also instructs his men to dispose of the corpses in the villa as if they’re nothing more than garbage. He doesn’t care where they’re thrown, so long as they’re out of his sight.
About four men have died, leaving five women and 26 men in the villa — 16 of whom are power users, while the remaining 10 are ordinary men. There are still plenty of supplies. After all, with fewer mouths to feed, their stockpile lasts longer. If they need more food, raiding a supermarket is always an option.
The following morning, the flow of zombies in the outskirts of Xiangcheng shifts slightly. A few straggler zombies wander into the park, and many others are passing by the street where the motel is located.
Most of the zombies appear to be migrating northward.
It seems that the majority of southern survivors are moving north as well.
