How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 244
Yun Tao isn’t about to warn Lei Jiang. After all, Yun Tao is already over 40 years old, and he understands exactly what Lei Jiang wants — to recruit him as a subordinate. That makes Lei Jiang no better than the rest. There’s no reason for Yun Tao to say anything.
After some empty pleasantries, Lei Jiang drives away. Yun Tao stands by the door, watching him leave. Without turning back, he asks Anran, who’s coming downstairs with Doll, “What do you think of him?”
“It’s hard to say.”
Anran walks over to the table and sits down in the chair where Lei Jiang had just been. The two don’t bother lighting a candle; they simply start discussing Lei Jiang in the moonlight.
“He wants us to join the survivor camp in the park,” Yun Tao says, clasping his hands together on the table. Looking at Anran holding Doll across from him, he adds, “What do you think? Just be honest.”
“I don’t dare to have any expectations for people anymore,” Anran says, shaking her head. Her expression darkens with unease.
She thinks back to why she left the hospital two months ago. Aside from needing more food, she’d hoped to find other survivors — people she could stick with and rely on.
But after everything that’s happened, she knows better. If she still believes in people now, she might as well dig her own grave. People have to learn from their mistakes.
For Anran, zombies and rats aren’t the biggest threats anymore — it’s human survivors. You never know when joining a group will mean ending up imprisoned, mistreated, or worse.
Yun Tao pulls his hands back from the table, straightens his back, and leans against his chair. He gives Anran a faint smile, his eyes showing a trace of admiration.
“You’re finally thinking clearly,” he says.
Before Anran can reply, Yun Tao continues, “I’m guessing Lei Jiang’s going to have his hands full when he gets back to the park. He won’t have time to worry about us for now.”
“Yeah… then there’s no need for us to run.”
“He’s probably counting on that.” Yun Tao chuckles. “He must think I’m the only fighter here, so he figured he could come in, say a few words, and then leave us to stew.”
Of course, Yun Tao has no idea why Lei Jiang — who already controls a sizable group of survivors — would go out of his way to stop by the motel just to meet him. Is he really interested in recruiting just one more ability user?
In this world, ability users aren’t rare anymore. There’s nothing special about that.
But one thing is certain — jumping blindly into a survivor group without understanding their situation is dangerous. It’s far too easy to end up walking straight into a wolf’s den.
Yun Tao, as a grown man, isn’t too worried. If things go south, he can simply leave. But Anran is a woman, burdened with a baby, trying to survive in this apocalyptic world. She can’t afford to take risks so lightly.
What they don’t know yet is that Lei Jiang’s true target isn’t Yun Tao — it’s Anran.
Meanwhile, Lei Jiang returns to his camp only to find chaos. The ability users who had been guarding the trenches are gone — all of them strung up in the trees with chains.
The zombies haven’t been killed. In fact, they’re now filling the trenches, pushing dangerously close to breaking into the park.
