Xu Turan looked scrutinizingly at Fang Xing, but the latter had already fallen into uncontrollable depression. She had been trapped in this ghostly place for so long, besides trying to save herself, she had also been secretly hoping, expecting that people outside would notice her disappearance, realize something was wrong, and contact rescue; now learning that as long as the mastermind behind was willing, they could completely conceal the fact of her disappearance, she instantly became quite dejected.

“…Alright. Don’t be depressed. Your hope hasn’t been in vain. Didn’t Qu Mian bring us here?” Xu Turan patted her reassuringly, “Although now it’s like Calabash Brothers saving grandpa, all of us coming in, but at least it’s a hope…”

Fang Xing: “…”

Even so, can you not use the Calabash Brothers saving grandpa comparison? It makes people even more uneasy.

“…Mm, I believe in you all,” after a moment of silence, Fang Xing nodded lightly. “As I said before, I’ll do my best to cooperate with you.”

“That’s the spirit we need,” Xu Turan patted her shoulder, lowering her head to flip through the booklet she had just found on the table—this was a school rules booklet, filled with dense small print, covering everything from behavior norms to dormitory regulations, extremely detailed.

She quickly scanned the first few pages, jumping directly to the dormitory section, just about to start reading when Fang Xing’s phone alarm suddenly went off.

“Only five minutes left,” Fang Xing jumped up at once. “Quick, pack up and get to bed first. The lights will be out soon, and there might be a room check after that…”

“Room check?” Xu Turan raised an eyebrow, “This late?”

“I’m not sure, but based on past experience, it’s highly likely,” Fang Xing said seriously, turning to climb onto her own bed, then thought for a moment and added: “Oh right, there’s one thing you must remember.”

“If someone knocks on the door later calling your name. You must count carefully. If it’s four knocks, it means it’s the dormitory auntie outside, you can open the door; if it’s five knocks, don’t open no matter what.”

“Why?” Xu Turan asked, puzzled.

“It’s written in the school rules. I can’t explain the reason very clearly,” Fang Xing pressed her lips together. “But my previous roommate, she accidentally responded to the wrong door once, was taken away by the person outside… and never came back.”

Xu Turan: ……

She now understood why Fang Xing took a while to open the door when the dorm supervisor called earlier.

Besides the rule for answering the door, there were many other bizarre rules in the dormitory.

Xu Turan didn’t have time to look closely before Fang Xing hurriedly told her the important ones—including but not limited to: no talking while lying in bed; when someone knocks on the door, only the person whose name is called can open it, others can’t get out of bed; if it’s after lights out, you can’t turn on the lights when opening the door; each dorm room must have at least 2 empty beds, and you can’t pile things on them…

“If you wake up in the middle of the night and hear unfamiliar breathing or sleep-talking, don’t pay attention to it. Just pretend you didn’t hear anything.”

After saying this, Fang Xing felt a bit creeped out herself and quickly changed the subject: “Oh right, I haven’t asked your name yet, you…”

Her gaze swept across Xu Turan’s name tag, and she immediately fell silent.

“Uh, my surname is Xu,” Xu Turan scratched her face, “You can just call me Xiao Xu.”

“…Alright, Xiao Xu.” Fang Xing responded, but her eyes were still glued to the name tag.

Although it’s not good to say this… but actually, earlier, while she said she believed, she was still doubtful in her heart. She was willing to believe simply because in this situation, she had nothing else to believe in.

Until this moment, when she saw the name on Xu Turan’s name tag.

Suddenly, confidence surged within her.

“Oh, right,” Xu Turan suddenly spoke up, “Let me ask you two more things.”

“If I’m asleep when the dorm supervisor knocks and I don’t open the door, what happens?”

“You must respond to the dorm supervisor’s knocking within 5 knocks. If you’re late or don’t open the door, it will be recorded. You’ll be punished the next day,” Fang Xing said seriously.

“Oh…” Xu Turan nodded, “Then if I’m punished, or if I accidentally open the wrong door, will it affect you?”

“…No,” Fang Xing said curiously, “Why are you asking this?”

Xu Turan just smiled and said she was curious, without further explanation.

Twenty minutes later, Fang Xing finally understood the answer to this question.

In the dark corridor, slow footsteps could be heard. Even through the door and distance, they were so clear.

Fang Xing didn’t dare to fall asleep at all, she could only stare wide-eyed, listening to those footsteps getting closer and closer. Listening to the knocking sounds on other doors.

Those sounds, some were 4 knocks, some were 5—this was truly the frightening part. Although there seemed to be only one set of footsteps in the corridor, there were two types of knocking sounds. And before those footsteps stopped at your door, you could never be sure which type it would be for you.

…Or whether it would be your turn at all.

Not every room was checked during these inspections. Fang Xing tightly gripped the corner of her blanket, until she heard those footsteps pass by her door, and the heavy stone in her heart finally dropped.

Right after, she heard those footsteps seemingly stop across from her.

Knocking sounds rang out, 5 in a row, followed by a voice so flat it was rigid:

“Lin Lailai Ling Liu Nainai Qu Ling Niunai He Liu Nai. Open the door.”

…?

Fang Xing was stunned, then bit her lower lip hard.

What kind of ridiculous name is that… She tried her best to control herself from making any sound, burying her head in the pillow.

“Lin Lailai Ling Liu Nainai Qu Ling Niunai He Liu Nai… Open the door.”

“Lin Nainai… Lin Lailai… Open the door.”

“Lin Lailai Ling Liulai…”

The voice outside repeated a few times, as if the person calling the name got annoyed themselves, stumbled over the words a few times, then silently gave up and started calling another person’s name:

“Zhu Yan Qiaocui…”

This time they didn’t even finish it once, stopping halfway through. Fang Xing had reason to suspect they were embarrassed by themselves.

Fang Xing had already wrapped herself entirely in her blanket, her shoulders shaking.

However, soon she couldn’t laugh anymore.

—Those footsteps moved away from across the hall and came directly to their room.

The next second, there was a knock on the door.

Knock knock knock knock knock—”Daddy, open the door.”

Knock knock knock knock knock—”Daddy, open the door.”

…Even though it was an equally absurd scene, Fang Xing started to break out in a cold sweat.

She heard movement from Xu Turan’s bed across from her as she got up.

…Don’t open it.

Fang Xing was startled and immediately started knocking on the bed frame. But Xu Turan acted as if she hadn’t heard, got out of bed, walked to the door, turned the handle, and pulled it open—

“Your daddy is here,” she heard Xu Turan’s slightly sleepy voice from below. “What’s your business?”

Fang Xing: ……

It was strange, she wasn’t even that familiar with this person yet.

But at this moment, she inexplicably had a feeling—this round, we’ve got this.
