Chapter 45: Abnormal Rationality

In a sense, Yang Buqi was a person with somewhat slow reactions.

For example, even after going through one and a half domains with Xu Turan, he still maintained an unrealistically optimistic attitude towards Xu Turan’s spirit of daring to court death, until his bottom line was refreshed time and time again. Another example is that it wasn’t until after this incident that he realized that for some people, one shouldn’t try to guess their mental state from their external behavior.

There are always some peculiar individuals in this world. They may seem to walk in a straight line and speak logically, but in reality, their brains are on the verge of shutting down, with a large circle of little people already dancing before their eyes.

Just like Xu Turan at this moment.

Actually, Pu Han’s assessment of her was still a bit optimistic. When he heard Xu Turan say she “only saw the eyelids” at that time, and saw that her actions and speech were all normal, he thought everything could still be salvaged. As long as it was dealt with in time, she could still avoid the gaze of Haunted House No. 71.

But in reality, Xu Turan knew clearly. At this point, let alone losing consciousness, even jumping from upstairs to end it all might not be of any use.

This was not a guess, nor was it reasoning, but purely a premonition. A prey’s premonition—she could feel that the real Haunted House No. 71 had begun to lock onto her. Its half-asleep, half-awake gaze was patrolling and searching inside the house, like a hunter determined to catch its prey, or a tiger or leopard patrolling its territory. This was no longer something she could actively avoid.

Xu Turan walked alone in the long corridor. Following her previous experience, she walked straight ahead with her head down. Piles of black silk threads kept appearing in her field of vision—they were like mushrooms proliferating crazily after rain, sometimes multiplying in large patches in just the blink of an eye. Some would even actively reach out towards her, tentatively trying to coil around her hands and feet. Or they would dangle directly from above, like upside-down female ghosts, attempting to give her a face-on attack.

Xu Turan kept her eyes straight ahead, only quickening her pace, until finally she was almost running—she held her breath and suddenly rushed out of the door right in front of her, her feet landing on the solid floor with a thud.

She looked around and let out a soft sigh.

The good news was that she had successfully escaped from the time-space fragment and was back in reality. She was now in the game room where she had initially met Yang Buqi. The bad news was that, perhaps because she had left the influence range of other No. 71, the “reality” before her eyes had become less “real”.

Black silk threads, tangled and intertwined with each other, piled up everywhere, like thick cocoons spread out. Looking around, she could hardly see any complete floor or wall surface.

What was worse, the eyes within those silk threads had opened.

Yellow eyeballs the size of car headlights were embedded there, randomly moving up, down, left, and right, with unfocused gazes, as if searching for something.

Xu Turan didn’t dare to delay, immediately walking quickly towards the basement exit and up the stairs. With almost every step she took, she could hear a notification sound of increasing Courting Death Value in her mind.

What “Snow White”—she thought expressionlessly, with this kind of experience and configuration, she should at least be a little mermaid.

The crisis premonition ringing crazily in her brain made her head ache. This further confirmed her approach—

For her, being “seen” was only a matter of time. The only thing she could do was to stay away from others as much as possible before being “seen” by the other party.

As for what to do after drawing it away…

As her feet stepped onto the last flight of stairs, Xu Turan suddenly stopped.

She raised her head as if sensing something. She met countless cold, arrogant, and malicious gazes.

Those cold gazes all fell on her, like a big bucket of ice water mixed with ice shards pouring down—without a doubt, she had been “seen”.

…On the bright side, at least she had left the basement in time.

Next, just try to survive.

Xu Turan closed her eyes briefly, comforting herself in her heart, and then heard a familiar notification sound in her mind.

【Congratulations, you have gained 1,000 Courting Death Value points!】

【Congratulations, your current total Courting Death Value has exceeded 5,988 points, unlocking the reward function [Cemetery of Disaster] Entry Ticket X1】

…Somehow, it feels like I’ve been shortchanged.

This was Xu Turan’s first reaction after hearing the notification.

She clearly remembered that the entry ticket she got last time was a dual-use ticket for both the Chaos and Beast servers, why had it become a single-use ticket this time?

She didn’t understand, but she instinctively felt that she had been shortchanged. Or maybe this Courting Death Value system was too stingy, giving less generous rewards as one progressed.

Her second reaction was—this name was too ominous.

Cemetery… Xu Turan mulled over this title, biting her lips hard.

The pain shot up along her nerves, instantly clearing her dazed eyes. She instinctively licked her lips, and a bit of blood moistened her dry mouth.

“To be honest, I think I can still make a last-ditch effort,” she muttered, suddenly raising her hand. The flashlight that had been prepared earlier opened with a swoosh, and a roaring flame rose in front of Xu Turan, forming a false wall of fire.

A cluster of black threads that was about to pounce retreated slightly, startled by this fake fire. Xu Turan seized the opportunity and launched another control attack. All the yellow eyeballs froze simultaneously, blanking out for 1.5 seconds before starting to move again—

But in this fleeting moment, Xu Turan had already taken a few quick steps, nimbly avoiding all the positions occupied by black threads, and ran straight upstairs.

Her goal was very clear—her own room.

Xu Turan thought it through clearly. Now in this house, apart from the basement, there were only two safest rooms. One was her adopted brother’s bedroom, and the other was her own bedroom—only these two rooms had been heavily fortified with runes by Yang Buqi, which could provide considerable defense.

And in her own room, there were still some supernatural items that hadn’t been thrown out… Previously, she was afraid they would be directly eaten, reducing the quantity. Now she couldn’t care about that anymore.

Those things were at least Lamp level at the bottom, they should be more attractive than a small fry like her, right?

Xu Turan thought silently, bringing her rabbit-like speed into full play. In two or three bounds, she darted up the stairs, about to step onto the second-floor corridor—

A long warning of crisis premonition rang in her mind, and Xu Turan’s heart moved. She suddenly stopped in her tracks.

Her eyes shifted slightly, as if she had realized something. She crouched down and tentatively reached out to touch the floor.

Her fingers passed straight through the floor, as if passing through a mass of air.

…Fake.

That thing was up to its old tricks again.

Xu Turan closed her eyes briefly, and like Feifei did to Pu Han, she raised her hand and gave herself a slap.

She didn’t hold back, but the pain came slowly and gently, as if through a layer. Xu Turan cursed inwardly and helplessly gave herself another slap with the back of her hand. This time the force was greater, and as she turned her head, her teeth grazed the wound she had bitten earlier, and a faint taste of blood spread in her mouth again.

The good news was that under the effect of the double pain, the scene before her eyes finally showed some changes—

The original stairs and corridor began to shake slightly, gradually becoming transparent, revealing the real scene hidden underneath.

Xu Turan only then discovered that she was actually standing on the balcony of the third floor.

…To be precise, outside the balcony.
