Chapter 29: Mom’s Arrival

This room was strangely cold.

A chilling coolness assaulted from all directions. Xu Turan’s heart stirred, suddenly remembering that outside the little girl’s bedroom seemed to be a room just as cold as this one.

… What did that diary say again? It seemed to be “It’s too cold outside, I can’t get out”?

A flash of inspiration lit up Xu Turan’s mind, illuminating countless thoughts. However, she also knew that now was not the time for random musings. She immediately composed herself and shrank into the thin film Weiwei had covered them with.

Almost as soon as she had hidden herself, the door they had come through was opened.

Remembering Weiwei’s previous instructions, despite her urge to court death, Xu Turan immediately closed her eyes—with her vision cut off, her other senses instantly became more apparent.

… Apparent, yet seemingly with a hint of distortion.

That strong sense of pressure appeared again, closer than before. In an instant, she felt her back become damp. Strange sounds rang in her ears, like the buzzing of a swarm of flies, or as if countless people were whispering. Beneath the murmurs was an extremely loud, gurgling flow, involuntarily making her think of those thick blood vessels connected to the monster.

It seemed someone was talking to her. She couldn’t remember a single word it said, but strangely understood the meaning of the sentence.

It was saying, open your eyes, look at me.

… I can’t.

Look at me. Let me see your gaze.

… No. There are others here… Absolutely not…

Look at me. Let me see you.

Xu Turan’s body began to tremble uncontrollably, full of resistance, yet her eyelids quivered slightly, as if they might open at any moment.

Then—she felt a warmth.

Something covered her eyes. Warm and thick. Heavy darkness covered her, and Xu Turan’s heart suddenly jolted, snapping her back to clarity.

Then she realized… things seemed to have gotten a bit worse.

The illusory sounds receded like a tide, and real sounds came from nearby. The beast-like panting and the smell of blood were clearly just at hand—

That thing was searching for them in this room. And obviously, it was about to find their hiding place.

… Could it sense them? If they were touched, would they be exposed? Which direction was the door again? Why hadn’t those photograph ghosts made any moves yet?

Xu Turan’s mind raced, her leg muscles tightly tensed, ready to spring, hoping that when the worst moment came, she would still have time to deliver a standard front kick to the opponent.

Just then, she suddenly heard a commotion.

She couldn’t hear the sound clearly, it seemed to be coming from the next room. From behind that locked door came a series of eerie cries and screams, the door was being pounded making loud banging noises, the doorknob kept turning, as if someone was urgently trying to get out from inside.

“It” was clearly attracted by this sound—the beast-like panting and smell of blood that had been so close gradually receded, and Xu Turan knew she had bet correctly.

Those photograph ghosts stuffed into the locked room had “hatched”. Facing the attendant directly, they had become utter prey, and in their panic, they would inevitably make some noise. For “it” who had personally locked up the attendant, sudden strange noises from a room that should have been quiet would surely attract some of “its” attention.

Sure enough, “its” gaze was drawn away. Claws scraped across the floor, making a grating sound. Judging from the sound, “it” should have walked to the front of that locked door.

There was a loud “crash”, and a stronger smell of blood spread throughout the room. Then came a “click”.

“It” had opened the locked door.

“It” went inside.

At this point, without Xu Turan’s prompting, the others also knew what to do—she didn’t know who started first, but Xu Turan felt herself almost being yanked up from the ground. By the time she reacted, she had already been dragged running through more than half the room.

The hands covering her eyes had been removed. She blinked desperately, trying to adapt to the sudden return of light and the constantly shaking vision. She didn’t know how many rooms they had run through, with her brain constantly ringing with a sense of crisis, before it finally settled down—

She gasped for breath and struggled to speak, “I think… I think we’re safe.”

No one responded to her words. Xu Turan had no choice but to be dragged along for another while, running through two more rooms before the highest-ranked boss finally stopped.

“Seems we’ve shaken it off,” he said, tilting his head slightly while carrying someone on his shoulder.

Yang Buqi had been applying poison to the doorknobs as they ran. Hearing this, he specially went to the door to sense for a moment, then nodded, “It’s not chasing us anymore.”

Only then did everyone let out a sigh of relief. The boss put down the person he was carrying and looked at Xu Turan approvingly, “Your senses are very sharp.”

Xu Turan was too exhausted to even respond or explain. Hearing this, she just gave a dry laugh, then her gaze immediately fell to the boss’s side—on the ground lay the unconscious Teacher Yu.

He had been carried all the way by the boss. At first, Xu Turan thought it was Xiao Gao who had injured his leg being carried, and was surprised when she realized it was him.

“By the way, is he okay?” She pointed at the person lying on the ground. The boss shook his head.

“He’s fine, I pinched him. I know how to control my strength,” the boss said. Seeing Xu Turan looking at him in surprise, he added, “He has a chaotic tendency. When we were hiding earlier, he was almost lured by that thing. I had no choice.”

In that situation, if just one person looked at that thing, it would attract its gaze, and Weiwei’s “mimicry” would naturally fail. To ensure the safety of others, he could only pinch the back of the other’s neck, knocking him unconscious.

… No wonder.

Xu Turan finally understood what that near out-of-control state she had been in was all about.

She felt she needed to thank Yang Buqi—the only person standing next to her at that time was Yang Buqi, and those hands covering her eyes could only have been his.

It must be said that compared to the boss’s attitude of knocking someone out without a word, Yang Buqi’s response could be said to be much gentler.

Yang Buqi was treating Xiao Gao’s leg injury. Hearing this, he looked up, “Teacher Yu actually has a chaotic tendency? I thought he was orderly.”

The boss shook his head, “It would be better if he was. The master of this domain is also chaotic. If we had someone orderly, we wouldn’t be so passive.”

Yang Buqi responded and walked over to Teacher Yu to try to wake him up. Noticing Xu Turan’s curious gaze, he explained, “‘Chaos’ and ‘Order’ are opposing tendencies that can suppress each other, and both have a certain natural resistance to each other. If there were a high-level ‘Order’ tendency ability user here, our situation would be much better.”

“It’s not bad now either,” Xu Turan muttered, then thought for a moment and asked, “Then what if a person has both ‘Chaos’ and ‘Order’ at the same time…”

“Impossible,” the boss interrupted her, “Opposing ability tendencies cannot appear in the same person.”

Chaos and Order, Long Night and Eternal Day, these two sets of tendencies are currently the only two confirmed opposing tendencies, and they are absolutely impossible to appear in the same person.
