Her Talent for Courting Death Has Always Been Impressive - Chapter 25 Part 1
Chapter 25: It Is Not Omnipotent
The abomination is not omnipotent. Even within its own domain.
They also have weaknesses, their own likes and dislikes, and blind spots. When there is a stark imbalance of power between ability users and abominations, all they can do is find these gaps for breathing room, and try to survive as much as possible in this “hunting ground” that belongs to someone else.
To ensure the survival of most people, “experience” is needed. People need to test the waters, summarize, preserve, share, pass on, and update — “experience” is a very valuable thing. It can turn a situation where only one person could survive into one where ten can live. It can transform a scenario of ten people stubbornly resisting into one of a hundred people united in purpose. The more people who survive, the more support there is, and the greater the hope. In the early stages of ability users’ struggle against abominations, there were many times when they just barely held on like this, bit by bit.
Using this long and sacrifice-filled clumsy method to resist and even repel invading abominations.
“Later, as high-level ability users gradually increased, people discovered the concept of ‘tendencies’,” Su Sui’er said casually as she led Xu Turan into a new room, searching around while speaking, “The confrontation with abominations became a bit more sophisticated.”
The awakening of ability users mostly comes from contact with abominations. The influence left in their bodies by the abominations, combined with some of their own qualities, forms the initial “attributes” of ability users. Everyone’s attributes are unique, and they will have one or two ability tendencies. By utilizing these “tendencies” well, ability users can level up and gain stronger capital for resistance—
“Chaos, Beast, Long Night, Eternal Day, Precognition, Omniscience, Natural Disaster, Life, War, Order. These are all the ability tendencies developed so far. Among them, ‘Precognition’ and ‘Order’ are unique to humans,” Su Sui’er said.
Su Sui’er handed a roll of gauze to Xu Turan and clapped her hands briskly: “Even abominations that were formed from fallen ability users would lose abilities related to these two tendencies after their fall. Therefore, people once believed that these two tendencies were humanity’s greatest capital in the fight against abominations.”
“Once?” Xu Turan noticed Su Sui’er’s choice of words.
“Precognition is useless. But ‘Order’ is truly useful,” Su Sui’er said, “High-level abilities with the Order tendency can establish regional rules, further constraining the activities of abominations, and win more space for human survival and resistance…”
Using “experience” plus “Order” to construct “rules” that can maximize human combat power is currently the main way for low-level ability users to fight against high-level abominations.
And the one they’re dealing with now clearly understands this point very well.
“Unfortunately this time, there’s no one with the Order tendency among the ability users dragged into this ‘domain’. We can only use the most old-fashioned experience-based approach — and to make matters worse, the abomination this time is extremely cunning, arranging many small monsters disguised as humans, making people distrustful of others. It has also placed more than one piece of misleading information in the rooms from the very beginning…”
Su Sui’er frowned, instantly shooting and killing a monster that was gnawing on a corpse as she opened the door. Her movement was so fast, a red light like a flying needle shot out from her fingertip, and Xu Turan barely saw clearly before the monster fell.
“Anyway, I don’t really dare to trust those so-called hints now,” Su Sui’er shook her hand, concluding, “One of my companions who came in with me was injured not long after entering because he mistakenly believed one of them, and now I don’t know how he’s doing.”
She unconsciously bit her lip and began a new round of searching. Xu Turan followed behind her with a pile of resources, nodding in understanding: “So you’re looking for your companion now?”
“Mm,” Su Sui’er nodded, “We got separated not long after we came in.”
Having lost trust in the information they found, they had to figure out many patterns by themselves. Amidst repeated ordeals, personnel losses were inevitable.
Su Sui’er got separated from the main group during one experiment. At that time, they were trying to figure out the pattern of room changes behind doors. Su Sui’er entered a room alone, and when she opened the door to look back, her companions had all disappeared.
This also led her to discover a hidden rule — when there are two or more people in the same room, the person responsible for opening the door will be briefly bound to the next room. If the door opener doesn’t enter the next room, the outside room won’t refresh, and even if a different door is opened, it will only show the same room; but if the door opener enters the next room and closes the door, when others open the door again, the outside room will be replaced.
So, after joining up with Xu Turan, she always opened the door each time, waited for Xu Turan to enter, and then entered herself.
This shows that she was truly concerned about Xu Turan getting lost.
Xu Turan didn’t care who opened the door, as she got Courting Death Value every time they changed rooms anyway. Moreover, she had no intention of separating from Su Sui’er for now — she still had a lot of questions to ask.
“How do you upgrade the tendency you mentioned?” she asked curiously while helping to search, “What if there are many tendencies at the same time? Can you decide which one to upgrade yourself?”
“All of these require enlightenment, understand? You’re only at the Firefly level, don’t think about these things, it’s too early,” Su Sui’er said, suddenly looking at Xu Turan, “By the way, you said you’re a newcomer, have you had your attributes tested? Have you figured out your ability?”
Test? Figure out? Xu Turan paused slightly, suddenly understanding — it seems that other ability users are different from her, their attributes and abilities are not directly presented in their minds.
She thought for a moment, then responded vaguely: “I haven’t been tested yet. As for abilities, it seems I can make low-level monsters dizzy, but I’m not sure exactly how to use it.”
This wasn’t really a lie, after all, she still hadn’t figured out what exactly “Front Kick” meant.
“Dizzy? Sounds like a Chaos tendency… I’m just guessing, not sure. But if it is, you’d better not upgrade it, staying at Firefly level is good enough. This tendency is very dangerous,” Su Sui’er said, furrowing her brow, “If I’m not mistaken, the master of this domain is likely to have a Chaos tendency as well. You’d better stay away from the monsters in here.”
Xu Turan: …
Understood, she’ll go find a monster to get close to later.
She seriously noted this in her mental notebook, her thoughts turning as she asked another question: “Have you guys figured out how to escape this place?”
“No,” Su Sui’er sighed heavily, “But based on past experience, we either find a loophole to find the exit, or directly repel it. Or find a way to destroy the foundation of this domain. None of these are easy.”
“Foundation?” Xu Turan quickly absorbed the new keyword.
“It’s something like a support point… ugh, let me think about how to explain it to you,” Su Sui’er scratched her head, “The premise for a domain to form is a ritual. And some things related to the ritual become the support points of the domain, such as sacrifices, ritual instruments, the ritualist themselves, or the attendants generated by the ritual, all could be possible — you can understand it as the pegs used to pin down a tent.”
If you remove the pegs, the tent will naturally fly away.
Xu Turan nodded with seeming understanding, suddenly frowning: “But Cha Ruoyu, who performed the ritual, hasn’t been able to come in until now…”
She had already shared her guesses about Cha Ruoyu and the key with Su Sui’er, so Su Sui’er quickly understood what she meant.
“Who knows about him. Maybe he was rejected by it,” Su Sui’er made no attempt to hide her disgust for Cha Ruoyu. Xu Turan’s eyes turned slightly, suddenly thinking of something else.
“‘Our family will surely reunite… under the merciful gaze of the starry sky,'” she recited thoughtfully.
Su Sui’er made a sound of acknowledgment and turned her head: “What?”
“This is from Cha Ruoyu’s suicide note,” Xu Turan said, “He said he sent away his wife and child himself, and also said he would definitely meet them… and he was so determined to enter this domain…”
