Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

“Next, we should gather information about that double-chinned man and the nobles around the Adventurers’ Guild,” I suggest.

Sara questions my plan. “Is that so? But can we really gather information on nobles?”

“It’s about who we need information on and for what purpose. As long as we focus on the right aspects, we can manage with our connections,” I say, remaining relatively optimistic about the task.

We need to collect personal details about the management of the Adventurers’ Guild and the nobles who oversee it. Unlike the count who lives far above us in the castle, the guild’s management staff are bureaucrats working in the Adventurers’ Guild located in the third district. Even if they are related to the nobility, it’s likely to be only a tenuous connection.

Moreover, information about which noble oversees the Adventurers’ Guild is probably public knowledge. The guild itself doesn’t seem to be a highly profitable enterprise, so it likely isn’t managed by the most influential nobles. However, further investigation is needed to confirm this.

“For now, let’s list some connections that might help us gather information: Firstly, there’s Anne, who handles our public relations and advertising. She’s been looking for noble patrons, so she probably knows quite a bit about internal matters. She might only provide information about who the wealthy nobles are, though. Next, there’s Jilboa from the Sword Fangs Legion. He seems to attend a lot of noble parties and is likely well-versed in political matters. Also, there’s the father-in-law of our deputy commander, Swiberry, who is a major merchant. He was quite helpful with the Roro situation before, so we could get useful information from him as well.”

I pause for a moment.

“What’s wrong? Is that all?” Sara asks with curiosity. She seems to sense my hesitation about naming someone.

“Well, yes, there is one more. He’s a sales agent from Kwan Workshop. But getting information out of him can be quite difficult; you have to negotiate carefully.”

Sara agrees. “Yes, he seems refined but has a somewhat condescending attitude. It was a bit unpleasant.”

I hesitate before adding, “And then there’s Roro.”

“Roro! Roro, as in the Roro who tried to ruin the shoe business and whom Kenji threatened to strip of all his gold! No way, he must be holding a grudge against Kenji for that!” Sara exclaims.

That’s a harsh way to put it. I only sold shoes to Roro because he wanted them.

“Don’t misunderstand. I’m not saying we should threaten Roro to get information. What I mean is, if we use Roro’s own tactics against the nobles, we might uncover something valuable,” I explain.

Sara looks at me intently, clearly skeptical. “Kenji, you’re not thinking of doing something bad, are you?”

It’s painful how much Sara trusts me.

“Don’t be foolish. If commoners like us tried to threaten nobles, we’d be eliminated instantly. Roro’s case is an exception.”

Roro is already disliked in noble society. On top of that, I have documentation of his weaknesses and have stripped him of the resources he needed for retaliation, which is why he hasn’t counterattacked so far. Also, Roro, having lost his influence and power, is probably too busy dealing with retaliation from those he has previously wronged.

“Well, for now, let’s focus on gathering information. Sara, I need your help too.”

With that, we get to work.

To solve problems correctly, we need to formulate hypotheses, gather information, and take effective actions. It’s troublesome but unavoidable. For ordinary people like me, it’s the only way to move forward.
