- Chapter 314 - The Questions of Jacob, the Great Merchant
Dear Readers,
Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.
In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.
Thank you for your patience and support!
Jacob is one of the top ten merchants in the Earldom.
Several generations ago, his ancestors expanded their business from buying and selling wheat to selling alcohol, greatly increasing the family fortune. Since then, they maintain their wealth by running a stable and successful business.
These qualities are passed down to Jacob, and in addition, his skill at dealing with people and his accurate calculations earn him the respect of wealthy merchants and nobles in the first-class district.
Jacob, a stable and reliable merchant, is now constantly scratching his head.
“Father, is something wrong?”
Seeing his father in such a state, Jacob’s eldest son, Nazar, calls out to him.
From Nazar’s perspective, his father is not the type to make snap decisions. That being said, his father’s decisions and actions are always backed by reasoning and logic, and this is something Nazar, who assists his father and aims to become the next business leader, understands well.
Yet today, his father has been troubled for quite some time.
This is unusual for him.
“Well, this letter,” Jacob says, showing his son the parchment spread out on the desk.
Jacob appreciates his son’s youth and imagination, hoping that Nazar might be able to understand something that he himself cannot.
Nazar looks at the parchment with some tension, but when he sees a familiar name, he feels a sense of relief.
“Oh, it’s from my brother-in-law, Swiberry. He’s asking if we have any equipment for pressing grapes into wine.”
Last year, his younger sister, who is four years younger than him, marries Swiberry, the vice-captain of the Sword Fangs Legion, a group that has been gaining attention in the city.
When Nazar first hears the news from his father, he is furious at the thought of his sweet little sister marrying an adventurer. But after seeing the grand ceremony that takes place in the square each time the group completes a mission, he quickly changes his mind.
In the twilight, lit by bonfires, the Sword Fangs Legion lines up in front of the terrifying monster’s head, overwhelming everyone around them with their high level of discipline and their equipment, which is on a different level than that of the Knights. Nazar realizes that this is not just a simple mercenary company.
Especially the leader of the group, the man’s charisma is extraordinary. That man will become a hero. Nazar feels that way, and Jacob shares the same opinion.
Thus, Jacob, the great merchant, now has familial ties with the Sword Fangs Legion.
It’s not strange, then, for Swiberry to send a letter requesting help from Jacob. Requests for financial aid or personnel dispatches have come before.
Nazar relaxes, but Jacob does not.
“That’s true, but why does he need a winepress?”
“Well, that’s…” Nazar tries to answer but is momentarily at a loss for words.
“He also asks if we can introduce him to a merchant who sells oil press machines, if we don’t have one on hand.”
An oil merchant? An oil press machine? Why? Nazar becomes even more confused.
“Does the letter not say why he needs it?”
“It seems that he doesn’t know the reason himself. I’ll arrange it because it’s a request from my precious son-in-law, but what on earth is he intending to use it for?”
Jacob tilts his head again, but in the end, he can’t find an answer to this question.
