Helping with Adventurer Party Management - Chapter 336
Dear Readers,
Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.
In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.
Thank you for your patience and support!
Wheat without husks doesn’t last long. And if it gets wet, it quickly rots.
That’s why, when carrying it as preserved food, it’s either not fully threshed and carried in waterproof leather cloth, or wrapped in oiled paper.
Before eating, you gently remove the husks and make porridge.
When making porridge, you need to adjust the heat carefully to avoid burning it, and adding salt, herbs, or garlic completely changes the flavor.
If carrying wheat is too much trouble, you end up eating bread that’s been baked hard, but it’s as tough as a brick.
So tough that it’s joked that a person could be killed with it, or that your life was saved when a bread crust crusehd a goblin.
“…I get that, but why do we have to do all this?!”
“We’re adventurers, after all!”
The boys grumbled.
The three boys were being made to thresh wheat under Sara’s supervision, hopping between inns to do so. They had to do it carefully, as if preparing the wheat for customers.
They were also being taught the correct amount of salt and types of herbs for making wheat porridge.
“Got a problem with that?” Sara glared at them, and the boys fell silent.
In fact, the conditions weren’t bad.
At the inns, they threshed wheat and helped with meal preparations.
In exchange, they got a discount on their lodging and were provided meals.
Since they were doing this at three different inns in a single day, they made a little extra money as a result of the labor.
But to the boys who had come from the rural village with dreams of becoming adventurers, this modest lifestyle seemed unbearable.
“Even if you didn’t tell us, this kind of work wouldn’t last long. Threshing wheat in an inn kitchen isn’t something you do every day. Tomorrow, we’re going shopping.”
With that, the sulking boys lifted their heads.
◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇
The next morning, Sara took the three boys to the market.
They passed the food market, the blacksmith, the weapon store, and the armor shop, and at that point, the boys, feeling suspicious, began walking more slowly.
“…Where are we going?”
“I’m not going to sell you off. Just follow me.”
And so, they arrived at a hardware store.
The store was dimly lit, with all sorts of metal products for daily life crammed onto shelves and walls.
“We want weapons, like axes, spears, or swords.”
Honestly, boys are just like that.
“You guys even know what you’re capable of? Spears and axes are incredibly difficult to handle and require a lot of strength! They’re called versatile weapons because you can thrust, sweep, and strike with them, but to use them, you need to be able to wield a spear, an axe, and a mace! You guys probably haven’t even swung a sword before, have you?”
The boys, who had just come from a rural village, had no response.
Swords are purely combat tools, with a lot of metal, and they’re useless in everyday life for farmers.
The most common cutting tools they would have seen are kitchen knives, hatchets, and axes.
Long-handled farming tools could also be used as weapons, but they’re inconvenient to carry and difficult to maneuver in the city, and they’re embarrassing for adventurers to use.
Sara left the boys to themselves and went to the back of the store to negotiate with the shopkeeper.
After a bit of haggling, they settled on a reasonably satisfactory price, and when the boys saw what Sara had brought out, they voiced their discontent.
“That’s all?! What good is that?! We want to be adventurers!”
What Sara brought out from the hardware store was a large round-bottomed pot, hooks for hanging it, a tripod, a hatchet, a kitchen knife, and an iron skewer.
