The Beirong army was dressed in blue-grey military uniforms, while the Chen Army was dressed in black. The soldiers of the two armies fought together, and they were almost indistinguishable from the observation deck.
Peering out, Yan Cai couldn’t discern who was who among the crowd, but he could spot the figure belonging to Jiang Manyue among the sea of heads, each no bigger than a sesame seed.
Behind Yan Cai were several bodyguards. Although he had intended to have all the imperial bodyguards assigned to his son, Jiang Manyue insisted on having a few of them stay by his side.
“Be careful in all things,” Jiang Manyue advised. Compared to their son, who could now fend for himself, Yan Cai was more vulnerable.
Moreover, there was always a thorn in his heart—although the King of Beirong had been relentlessly hunting down Xierli, he still hadn’t found him yet.
Xierli was a desperate fugitive who would rather cut off his own path than not exact revenge, as evidenced by his willingness to kill the envoy. As long as Xierli remained at large, he couldn’t rest easy.
However, most people didn’t know what the enemy commander looked like, making it difficult to identify him at a glance. Even though Jiang Manyue had posted Xierli’s portrait in the most conspicuous place in the camp where every soldier coming and going could see it.
Xierli moved quickly towards the observation deck in a group of people. He passed by the portrait of him hanging on the wooden stake. Xierli didn’t even move his eyebrows and turned a blind eye.
Now that he has put on a little makeup, he looks different from the portrait. The group of people also said: “I heard that whoever can catch Xierli will be rewarded with a thousand taels of silver.”
“Stop talking, let’s go quickly. We still have missions, and it has nothing to do with us. How can we meet him here, and we can’t catch him. I heard that he is very good at kung fu. It’s better to complete the task honestly and get rewarded faster.”
No one noticed Xierli who was among their team. He doesn’t look like a Beirong person at all, he looks like a complete Chen Dynasty person.
On the observation deck, Yan Cai clenched his fists excitedly. He saw with his own eyes that Jiang Manyue chopped off the opponent’s horse and captured Qi Zhen alive. When he turned back, Jiang Manyue seemed to feel something. He raised his head and seemed to see Yan Cai on the high platform from a long distance.
Yan Cai couldn’t help but get off the observation tower.
Even the generals of Beirong were captured, enemy morale has taken a huge blow. Some of the more timid ones have already dropped their weapons and surrendered, even their flags have fallen to the side…
Those remaining fought back in desperation, yet the Chen army, despite the obvious momentum of victory, remained composed and continued to fight fiercely.
Jiang Manyue returned to the watchtower with the unconscious Qi Zhen. He had already spotted Yan Cai descending from the high platform.
Along the way, his subordinates congratulated him.
“Congratulations, Tanghua, for capturing the enemy general! Victory for our army is imminent.”
However, there was no smile on Jiang Manyue’s face. He remained cold and indifferent, not feeling proud or joyful about the significant achievement he had just made. Compared to the joy of capturing an enemy general, the anticipation of seeing Yan Cai’s joy was much stronger.
Yan Cai took a few steps down from the city wall and saw Jiang Manyue dismounting from his horse. As for the unconscious Qi Zhen, Jiang Manyue casually threw him to the adjutant. The adjutant nervously ordered someone to tie Qi Zhen up securely. After all, this was an enemy general, and they couldn’t afford to let him escape.
Jiang Manyue himself then strode briskly toward Yan Cai.
Just then, an unexpected incident occurred. Among the group of soldiers guarding the watchtower behind Yan Cai, one suddenly made a move, shooting a crossbow from his sleeve.
The crossbow could shoot out dozens of small arrows, as thin as fingers but incredibly sharp, with a chilling gleam. The arrowheads were shaped like lotus flowers and coated with poison.
The bodyguards immediately rushed to intercept the arrows, but due to their small size and number, one or two still slipped through and flew toward Yan Cai.
Yan Cai hadn’t realized the arrows were aimed at him at first, but even when he did, he remained calm.
As long as Jiang Manyue was here, he wouldn’t panic. He believed he wouldn’t be harmed, no matter what.
Sure enough, Jiang Manyue swiftly deflected all the remaining arrows flying toward Yan Cai from a distance, using three sleeve arrows and one throwing dart, all of which deeply embedded themselves into the ground.
Jiang Manyue suddenly embraced Yan Cai.
“How are you? Are you alright? Are you injured? Let me see…”
Yan Cai was unable to dodge it, and with so many people watching, it was rather embarrassing. Meanwhile, Xierli was taken down by a dozen or so guards working together. If a dozen guards can’t defeat one Xierli, then all these guards might as well retire and return home, no longer needing to stay by the Emperor’s side as guards.
“I didn’t expect you to come knocking on the door yourself,” Jiang Manyue said coldly, looking at Xierli as if looking at a dead person.
Xierli lowered his head. He knew he was outmatched, and there was nothing to say now that he had fallen into their hands. He clenched his lips, but Jiang Manyue suddenly slapped him across the face.
Blood trickled from Xierli’s mouth; his face full of hatred towards Jiang Manyue. Knowing what awaited him after being captured by the Chen army, he would rather choose death. Yet, even death was denied to him.
“Hold him back. He might try to take poison. Don’t let him die; we need him alive. Send him back to the capital for the Emperor’s judgment!”
Xierli’s mouth was pried open to check for poison, and finally, a cloth was stuffed into his mouth to prevent him from using any means to commit suicide.
With both successive generals of Beirong captured, morale soared, and the crowd cheered.
“Our army will win! Our army will win! Long live the Prince! Long live the Tanghua! Long live the Emperor!”
It seemed like the crisis had passed, but Yan Cai’s worries from yesterday lingered, becoming even more obvious.
But where was the danger? The enemy was no match, the enemy general had been captured, and they could return to the capital today.
Swish, swish, arrows whistled through the air, with a swooshing sound. The arrows seemed directionless, coming from nowhere, yet also aimed directly at Yan Cai.
Instinctively, Jiang Manyue pushed Yan Cai away and dodged the arrow, but he didn’t know there was another arrow—one from a direction unknown and an assailant unseen.
It was a stray arrow. Perhaps the owner of the arrow hadn’t noticed where it went.
The arrowhead bore the symbol of the Chen dynasty, seemingly shot by an archer from the Chen army.
That arrow could have been dodged, at least for someone with Jiang Man Yue’s martial skills. However, for some reason, at that moment, it was as if he were cursed, unable to dodge.
It was as if he were destined to be hit by that arrow—a single arrow piercing his heart from behind.
Jiang Manyue suddenly remembered that in his past life, it seemed to have been the same. Inevitably, he would encounter this arrow that he couldn’t dodge.
