…

…

…

I had a strange dream. It was like one of those mobile games where you start by pulling a gacha. As the giant cards appeared and emitted a brilliant light, eight of them transformed into people. The rest were a book, a model of a building, and a toy soldier on horseback.

The countdown began, and one by one, the gacha items disappeared. When the countdown hit zero, everything went dark for a moment, only to immediately brighten again.

“Are you awake? How are you feeling?”

“…Not bad, I think.”

I wasn’t feeling bad, but I was definitely confused. The person speaking to me was one of the characters from the gacha in my dream. She had long, platinum-blonde hair that fell to her waist, tied together in one strand, and she wore a maid’s uniform. Her beauty caught my attention as she leaned over to look at me. It seemed I was lying in a bed.

If I recall correctly, her name was…

“Alice.”

“Yes, Count?”

She called me “Count.” I didn’t really understand, but it had a nice ring to it. Still smiling softly, she began to open the curtains.

“It’s a beautiful day today. After breakfast, perhaps you would enjoy a hunt in the forest?”

“A hunt?”

“Yes. While I wouldn’t want you to push yourself too hard, I’m sure Mary and Yumika would be thrilled if you brought back some delicious meat.”

Hunting in the forest? That didn’t quite register with me. Mary and Yumika… they were characters from the gacha, right? The feel of the bed and the sunlight pouring through the window were a little too real for a dream…

“Once you’re ready, please come to the dining hall. It seems Sir Odolski bagged a large catch yesterday, and Mahdavikia is excitedly butchering to prepare it for stew.”

“I see, I’ll be there.”

Alice bowed and left the room. Beside the bed stood a massive wardrobe, filled with clothes that seemed tailor-made for me. The only issue was that they were all way too flashy. After some searching, I found a simple dark gray tunic and pants and put them on.

For the record, I had been completely naked when I woke up, and let’s just say, the size of my manhood was a strong indication that this wasn’t reality, or at least not my old self.

“What the…”

It was a little sad to admit, but I had no memory of being so… well-endowed. Not to mention, my body felt taller, more toned.

“Did I die?”

I tried to recall, but my memory was fuzzy on that point. Still, if this really was a “reincarnation” gacha, then yeah, I must’ve died in my previous life and crossed over to this world. Since I wasn’t a baby, it was probably more of a “transmigration” than a reincarnation, but I guess that’s just splitting hairs.

“My lord? Is everything alright?”

Since I was taking my time, Alice had come to fetch me. I called out that I was coming and stepped out of the room. Aside from Alice, another young maid was waiting. While Alice had a mature beauty, this girl radiated youthful energy.

“Good morning, my lord.”

“Ah, good morning, Irina.”

She bowed deeply, every movement graceful and polished. If I remember correctly, the description said she was the third daughter of a lower-ranking noble family. Her hair, cut to shoulder length, was a pale silver—a color rarely seen in Japan.

“Oh my, once again you’ve chosen such a plain outfit… You would look much better in red or orange.”

I wasn’t interested in wearing such flashy colors for everyday clothes, so I declined. Both Irina and Alice seemed a bit disappointed by my choice.

“Plain clothes are fine. There’s no need to stand out, after all.”

“That’s not true! While there may not be many guests around, you are still a high-ranking noble, my lord. You should always be dressed accordingly!”

High-ranking noble?

There’s so much I don’t understand.

[The noble ranks in this world are Duke, Marquis, Count, Viscount, Baron, and Knight. High-ranking nobles refer to Dukes, Marquises, and Counts. Of course, there are many powerful families even among the lower ranks.]

What’s that?

[Greetings. I am Command, here to assist you in your second life. I look forward to serving you.]

Thanks. First off, where am I? Who am I?

[This is Lepmia, one of the nations in Arsmark, a world whose existence is uncertain yet undeniably real. To put it in terms you’re familiar with, it’s what’s commonly known as a different world.]

Yeah, I figured as much. Go on.

[You are a high-ranking noble of Lepmia, holding one of the ten seats of the Great Noble Houses. Specifically, you are the current head of the Hesselink family, Count Rex Hesselink, occupying the ninth seat.]

Rex Hesselink—that’s my new name, huh? Got it. So, out of ten powerful nobles, I’m second to last.

[Your father, the former head, passed away in an unexpected accident. As his eldest son and a renowned summoner, Your Excellency, you’ve inherited House Hesselink. You are currently 28 years old.]

Thanks for the backstory. So my father’s dead. What about my mother or siblings?

[Your mother resides in the capital with your younger sister.]

Not many siblings for a noble family, huh? I always thought they had large families, but I only have a sister. I should make sure we get along. I wonder when I’ll meet her… Well, first I need to get used to all this.

“If I ever have to make a public appearance, I’ll let Alice and Irina choose my outfit. But for now, please allow me to wear something simple.”

“If you’ll promise that, I suppose I can let it slide.”

Crisis averted—for now. I’d just kicked the problem down the road, but there was no way I could handle wearing flashy, extravagant clothes every single day.

“Alice, how about that fabric the merchant brought the other day?”

“Yes, that one. I’ll call the tailor later.”

The problem I’d delayed was definitely waiting for me in the future. As I watched the two maids whispering to each other while leading me, I silently apologized to my future self.

Sorry, future me. You’ll probably end up wearing some outrageously flashy outfit. Just take one for the team.

“Hey, young master! You’re late! My masterpiece’s already gone cold. Alice, Irina, let’s get things ready. Chop chop!”

As I stepped into the dining hall, a scruffy, bearded man in a chef’s coat hurried over and threw an arm around my shoulder like we were old pals. This must be Mahdavikia, the chef. He looked like he was in his late thirties to early forties, with short, cropped black hair. Grinning from ear to ear—no, it was more of a smirk—he pointed to a pot simmering over the fire.

“Odolski bagged a real prize, so I cooked it up into a stew. I bet you’ll love it!”

He sure was casual. I didn’t mind, but the maids were glaring at him like they wanted to burn a hole through him.

“Huh? Hey, hey, you two! Don’t wrinkle those pretty faces with a frown. Right, young master?”

Don’t drag me into this. You’re the one getting on their nerves.

“Mahdavikia is a highly skilled chef who once served in a foreign royal court. After being falsely accused of poisoning the king’s meal, he fled the country. He eventually found his way here and was hired by House Hesselink. His one condition was that his blunt behavior not be reprimanded.”

Now that is an impressive backstory. If I scold him, it’ll technically be a breach of contract.

“Mahdavikia’s always been like this. No point in getting worked up about it. What matters is how good the food is, right?”

“If that’s what you say, my lord. But Mahdavikia, please, I beg you—when it’s an official event, do behave yourself. Please.”

“Roger that! When the time comes, I’ll be the picture of refinement. After all, I used to rub shoulders with royalty, you know?”

The way he winked with a dramatic flair almost seemed to make an audible snap. Despite the cold stares from Alice and Irina, he didn’t seem fazed at all. I could learn a thing or two from his nerves of steel.

I sat alone at a ridiculously large table draped with a spotless white cloth, while Alice and Irina stood behind me. Right on cue, Mahdavikia appeared and placed a steaming bowl of stew before me. It was filled to the brim, a creamy white stew with chunks of vegetables and large pieces of meat floating inside.

“Go on, dig in. If you like it, make sure to give Odolski some credit!”

I speared a sizable piece of meat with my fork and took a bite. Delicious! It practically melted in my mouth; I barely needed to chew. It reminded me of pork, but with far more depth in flavor. The seasoning of the stew was perfect, just sweet and salty enough to bring out the richness of the meat. The ingredients were obviously top-notch, but it was Mahdavikia’s skill that truly shone through.

“This is incredible.”

My mind was buzzing with all sorts of praises, but that’s all I managed to say out loud. Then again, when you eat something this good, sometimes simple is best.

“Hah! Now that’s what I like to hear! No need for fancy talk when one word says it all. You’ve got a real talent for giving compliments, young master! That’s why I can’t stop cooking for you.”

Well, as long as he’s happy. I guess I did a good job after all.

Odolski, the one who hunted this meat—he was the knight, wasn’t he?

“Alice, where’s Odolski? I need to thank him for bringing in such a great catch.”

“Sir Odolski is likely somewhere in the forest, hunting beasts. He should return by evening.”

“No need to wait. I’ll take a stroll and explore myself.”

“A stroll, huh? Only someone like you, an advanced summoner, would call that forest a place for a casual walk. Honestly, the likes of Odolski and you… ‘inhuman’ fits the bill perfectly.”

“Mahdavikia! That’s incredibly disrespectful to the count!”

“Don’t worry about it, Alice. He means it as a compliment.”

“As expected of you, young master. There are just some things only men understand.”

“I hate that kind of talk about ‘men’ and ‘women!'”

“Haha! Sorry, sorry. Let me make it up to you, Irina, with an extra serving of stew.”

It seems the staff here get along really well. Despite their different positions, they seem comfortable enough to speak their minds. That’s good—if this household were a den of constant power struggles, I’d be a nervous wreck by now.

“Take care of things while I’m out, Alice, Irina.”

“Of course. You’ll be back by evening, won’t you?”

That reminds me—what are my actual responsibilities as Rex Hesselink? I’m a noble, and supposedly an important one, so there’s no way I’m just supposed to be lounging around all day, right? What am I supposed to do, exactly?

[For most nobles, their main duties involve managing their estates. That includes hearing petitions from the people and addressing any issues. There are also meetings with neighboring lords and regular visits to the royal castle.]

Petitions from the people, huh? I wonder how many there are. How do taxes work? I do have a butler, don’t I? Maybe I can leave it all to him.

[However, House Hesselink is an exception. The family’s only land is this Magical Beast’s Garden, and as such, you have no subjects. The only people living here are the few who serve your house and the guards.]

Seriously? I’m part of some grand council called the Ten Great Nobles, yet I don’t even have any land or people to govern? Well, I suppose that means less responsibility. Still, what about taxes? Do we get an exemption because of some past glory?

[House Hesselink has traditionally paid its taxes by slaying the magical beasts that roam the Garden and offering their materials to the crown. This has been accepted as a form of tax payment.]

So, we’re a family of warriors, then?

[Your predecessor was known as the greatest spear wielder of his time, and your forebear before him was a fire mage unrivaled in his power. Many believe this lineage of strength is a divine blessing.]

And now I’m an advanced summoner. I guess I can summon things like a Dragon Zombie or a Great Demon Ape… Sounds pretty intense. Maybe I’ll give that a try when I search for Odolski.

[Other than yourself, the current members of House Hesselink who can fight magical beasts are Odolski, the fallen holy knight; Mary, the assassin; and your butler, Jean-Jacques.]

“I’ll head into the forest. If nothing comes up, I’ll be back by evening.”

“Safe travels, my lord.”

“If a beast appears that even the count and Odolski can’t handle, then it’s truly the end of the world.”

“Indeed.”
