“Director Shang, look, look! I just had my eyelid surgery redone, and the patient slapped me and broke it. Do you know how difficult it is for me? I used to rely on my looks to make a living!” Tu Yi stormed into Shang Zhuoxi’s office, pointing at her drooping eyelid and speaking through gritted teeth.
“None of you nurses ever follow the doctor’s orders. Who can we blame?” Xu Yuer, who was standing nearby, rolled her eyes at Tu Yi, clearly annoyed.
“Oh, you’re here too, hmm? Are you really lecturing me about doctor’s orders? If it weren’t for your prescription mix-up, would I have given the wrong medicine to that patient? Stop standing there and talking without any empathy! If that slap landed on your face, you’d probably cry and run to your parents for help.”
“What are you babbling about, you effeminate fool? Do you think I’m you, crying and running to my parents? Can you blame me for the antibiotic exceeding the limit?”
“You should consider yourself lucky that you weren’t there. Who knows, you might have taken a punch.”
“Zhuoxi, look at this annoying nurse, she’s being mean to me,” Xu Yuer immediately grabbed Shang Zhuoxi’s sleeve, her eyes welling up with tears in distress.
“This is a hospital, don’t speak so loudly,” Shang Zhuoxi sighed in frustration. How could these two adults come running to her like children complaining? “Tu Yi, as a nurse, you should have the ability to make judgments. You should know what should not be reduced and what should not exceed the limit. However, I’m glad to see that you didn’t retaliate against that rude patient. You know, medical staff have to swallow their grievances and digest them slowly. Let someone else take care of that patient. As for your eyelid… come see me after work.”
Tu Yi felt somewhat relieved by Shang Zhuoxi’s understanding. As she left, she shot Xu Yuer a cold glare.
“Yu’er, doctors shouldn’t look down on nurses. Do you understand that?”
“Hmph!” Xu Yuer raised her head to show her disagreement.
“You should be grateful to Tu Yi, shouldn’t you? If it weren’t for him taking those slaps for you, that patient might have taken out their frustration on you one day,” Shang Zhuoxi patiently advised Xu Yuer, hoping that her words would sink in.
“Alright, whatever Zhuoxi says goes. Don’t be angry, okay?” Xu Yuer didn’t want Shang Zhuoxi to be upset, so she walked over and nuzzled her face with her nose.
“No, I’m not. Go and attend to your duties,” Shang Zhuoxi reassured her.
……
It had been a long and exhausting day for Shang Zhuoxi, filled with intense surgeries and chaotic hospital scenes. In her weary state, the only person she could think of was An Chujie.
An Chujie was in the middle of washing dishes when the doorbell interrupted her. She quickly wiped her hands and rushed to the living room, hesitating for a moment before deciding to open the door.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in for a sit?” Shang Zhuoxi leaned against the door, raising an eyebrow, waiting for An Chujie’s invitation. However, the hostess didn’t seem inclined to invite her, and after a while, An Chujie took a step back, signaling that she could come in.
“I’m hungry, An Chujie. Why are you doing the dishes?” Shang Zhuoxi pointed at her own stomach with her finger.
“I’ll repay you for the renovation costs at the end of the year, and I’ll slowly repay the debt you helped me with as well,” An Chujie replied, still facing away from Shang Zhuoxi and continuing with her tasks.
“I didn’t come here to talk about that, really, Chujie. I’m hungry. Can you make me something to eat?” Shang Zhuoxi gazed longingly at An Chujie’s figure. She missed and yearned for the days when An Chujie used to cook for her every day, and she even hoped that they could go back to the way things were.
An Chujie turned off the water, wiped her hands, and reluctantly bypassed Shang Zhuoxi to open the fridge and take out some ingredients. Shang Zhuoxi couldn’t help but feel a sense of joy. She leaned against the doorway, watching An Chujie. The strands of her hair falling down made her beautiful profile even more alluring. In that moment, An Chujie in the kitchen appeared to be a capable and nurturing wife. Shang Zhuoxi walked over and tenderly tucked the stray strands of hair behind her ear.
“You should go outside. I’m afraid the oil might splash onto your clothes,” the words were spoken coldly, and when Shang Zhuoxi’s hand made contact with her face, An Chujie awkwardly turned her head away.
“Alright then, I’ll wait for you outside.”
“Mmm~ It’s delicious,” Shang Zhuoxi expressed her satisfaction with An Chujie’s stir-fry. As she looked into An Chujie’s eyes, a pleasant gleam flickered within her own.
“Well, as long as you’re not hungry,” An Chujie felt a bit embarrassed under Shang Zhuoxi’s intense gaze and hurriedly tidied everything up again.
“What should I do? I didn’t bring any pajamas,” Shang Zhuoxi’s expression was slightly awkward, indicating that she didn’t plan on going back tonight.
“Here, take these. They’re new. I bought a size too big and can’t wear them,” An Chujie handed the pajamas to Shang Zhuoxi, her eyes avoiding direct contact. Shang Zhuoxi took the cotton pajamas and rubbed them against her face, smiling mischievously.
“Can’t wear them? Or did you buy them specifically for me?” An Chujie seemed caught in a lie and felt a bit ashamed.
“Hurry up and go wash. I still have some music to work on,” Shang Zhuoxi said, hastily escaping.
“Wait, you signed with their company?” An Chujie, who was engrossed in studying sheet music on the couch, was startled by the voice from above. She looked cautiously at the person standing next to her. Due to the angle, Shang Zhuoxi, who was only wearing pajamas, appeared excessively tall.
“What? Are you planning to sabotage my job again through some means?” That was Shang Zhuoxi’s expertise.
“Why would you say that? You have an innate artistic talent. Being a server or a teacher doesn’t suit you. Don’t worry, I currently have no intention of interfering with your current job.”
“There’s no such thing as what suits or doesn’t suit. Back then, I needed money more than I do now.” An Chujie’s casual comment about her hair tugged at Shang Zhuoxi’s heart. It was true, she was so desperate for money that she took such a huge risk to sell alcohol.
Shang Zhuoxi sat down next to An Chujie and leaned back, resting her head on An Chujie’s leg.
“Sometimes debts don’t have to be repaid with money, Chujie. My neck hurts, can you give me a massage?” Shang Zhuoxi closed her eyes, inhaling the delightful scent of An Chujie, not the least bit concerned that An Chujie might refuse.
Shang Zhuoxi’s damp golden hair was sticking to An Chujie’s thigh, and the sudden coldness made An Chujie feel a bit uncomfortable. Shang Zhuoxi’s eyelids seemed heavy, and she truly looked exhausted. On one hand, An Chujie rejected her rudeness and disregard for her own feelings. On the other hand, seeing the queen-like figure leaning against her without any defenses, she couldn’t help but feel a tinge of sadness. It was difficult to scold or push her away. So, An Chujie carefully took a towel and gently dried Shang Zhuoxi’s hair. Then, she started to knead her shoulders and neck with just the right amount of pressure. Shang Zhuoxi’s hands instinctively wrapped around An Chujie’s waist, and before they knew it, Shang Zhuoxi fell asleep on An Chujie’s stomach.
An Chujie felt the rhythmic rise and fall of Shang Zhuoxi’s breath and allowed her to hold onto her like that. She gently used her foot to pull a blanket from the edge of the couch and covered both of them. They slept like that on the couch for the entire night.
An Chujie was awakened by the chill of the early morning. Being exposed all night made her upper body a bit uncomfortable. She carefully placed Shang Zhuoxi back on the couch and got up early.
When Shang Zhuoxi woke up, An Chujie had already prepared hot porridge for her.
“The porridge is good, but I prefer the one you make.”
“I’ll make it for you when I have the time.”
Shang Zhuoxi put on her coat and tidied herself up, looking sharp and energetic.
“You…” An Chujie watched the person who was about to leave, but the words stuck in her throat.
“What about me?” Shang Zhuoxi blinked her deep blue eyes, waiting for An Chujie to speak.
“Nothing, just go to work,” An Chujie said, looking at Shang Zhuoxi with a strange expression. After a few seconds, Shang Zhuoxi drove away.
Actually, An Chujie wanted to remind her to take care of her neck and not to always bow down and study those miscellaneous potions. But considering that she wasn’t a doctor after all, maybe that was just the norm for their work. So, An Chujie decided not to say much.
Not long after Shang Zhuoxi left, An Chujie started feeling dizzy.
“Chujie, I’ve arrived at the airport.”
“Oh, you said you were coming next week, right? Yi Heng, wait for me, I’ll come pick you up… cough… cough,” An Chujie couldn’t hold it back and coughed again.
“Forget it, Chujie. Are you feeling sick with a cold? Just give me your address, I’ll come over myself,” Yi Heng said, feeling concerned when he heard An Chujie cough. But when he saw her, his heart felt like it was breaking.
An Chujie had already opened the door in advance, and when Yi Heng pushed it open, he saw her on the couch, looking so uncomfortable. Her body seemed frail and weak, as if she had been drained.
An Chujie struggled to sit up. Her head felt even heavier today than yesterday. Yi Heng immediately walked over and gently touched her flushed face, but as soon as he made contact, he started coughing.
“You’re burning up!”
“I’m sorry, I… I couldn’t go to the airport to pick you up,” An Chujie wanted to say something more, but Yi Heng hugged her tightly.
“Don’t you know you have a fever? Do you have any fever-reducing medicine at home?” he asked, shaking his head against her.
“Wait for me, I’ll go buy some fever medicine.” Yi Heng searched around for a water dispenser, poured a glass of warm water for An Chujie, and then went to buy the medicine. He didn’t even have time to process how An Chujie had ended up like this.
Yi Heng repeatedly caressed An Chujie’s gaunt face, his eyes filled with tenderness.
“Yi Heng, thank you.”
“Silly, don’t say thank you. Chujie, I want to take care of you, always take care of you,” Yi Heng said as An Chujie smiled and remained silent.
“After you’ve recovered, would you like me to take you away from here?”
An Chujie pursed her lips and finally spoke up.
“My job is here, Yi Heng. I really appreciate your concern and the warmth you bring me. Truly, I do. But I can’t leave with you,” An Chujie said weakly, touching the man’s face. Yi Heng was wearing a cozy red hoodie, looking like a big boy.
“What do you mean you can’t? RLM has subsidiary companies over there too,” Yi Heng anxiously furrowed his brows.
“Let’s just forget about it,” An Chujie forced a smile.
“Is it really about work? Or is it just that you want to keep chasing after that heartless doctor, letting her stab you a few more times before you’re satisfied?!” Suddenly, anger surged up from the depths of Yi Heng’s heart. He forcefully shook off An Chujie’s hand, his eyes turning red and heated, his voice raised.
“She’s not a heartless doctor!” An Chujie immediately retorted. She didn’t want to hear anyone speak ill of Shang Zhuoxi like that.
“A normal doctor wouldn’t casually experiment on any random cat or dog, let alone a living human being! Especially not someone who loves her so much! In her eyes, you’re not even worth as much as a cat or a dog! Either she’s a beast or you’re just blind! Look at how much you’re suffering now, where is she? Does she care about you? She…”
“Enough! Yi Heng, you don’t understand,” An Chujie interrupted Yi Heng’s harsh words.
“I don’t understand? Yeah, I really don’t understand why you’re so obsessed with her. I don’t understand how she can be so heartless. Oh, by the way, Chujie, you just reminded me, maybe I should stab her a couple of times too!” Yi Heng’s words were filled with frustration.
