- Chapter 6 - Si Jingnian, the Fool with Too Much Money
As I prepared to head to the high-speed train station, I received a WeChat message from Jiang Yiyi.
Yiyi Not Yiyi: My gosh! I was too busy last night and only saw it today!
Peaceful New Year: Saw what?
Yiyi Not Yiyi: Si Jingnian gave a huge red envelope!
Peaceful New Year: Bigger than mine?
I added a rich lady tossing cash emoji.
Yiyi Not Yiyi: More than yours!
Yiyi Not Yiyi: By one yuan!
Peaceful New Year: Huh?
For good luck, I had given Jiang Yiyi a red envelope with 9,999 yuan, wishing her and her husband a long, happy marriage.
The custom of giving wedding red envelopes is universal; it depends on how close you are. Jiang Yiyi and I have been friends for nearly 20 years, so that amount felt right. For casual colleagues or acquaintances, people usually give around a thousand yuan.
Jiang Yiyi and Si Jingnian aren’t close like best friends, yet she gave 10,000 yuan. Is she a fool with too much money, or just a fool with too much money?
Yiyi Not Yiyi: I was shocked!
Yiyi Not Yiyi: Why so much?
Yiyi Not Yiyi: Does the goddess secretly love me?
Yiyi Not Yiyi: I feel like I hit the jackpot!
I rolled my eyes inwardly, thought for a moment, and replied:
Peaceful New Year: Don’t be shameless. No matter how much she gave, you’re not getting a deal. When she gets married, you’ll have to give it back.
Peaceful New Year: She’s not losing out.
Of course, when I said that, I didn’t expect Si Jingnian would actually lose out later. Since we ended up together, stingy Jiang Yiyi only gave us one red envelope, claiming, “One family doesn’t give two envelopes.”
After chatting with Jiang Yiyi, I turned to scold Si Jingnian.
“Miss Si, are you a fool with too much money, or have you never been to a wedding?” I frowned, using my teacher tone. “Why’d you give Yiyi such a big red envelope?”
“No. I’ve been to weddings. Because she’s your good friend,” Si Jingnian replied. She wasn’t reading today; instead, she leaned back in her chair with her eyes closed, resting. She didn’t even open them.
So, she gave that much just because Jiang Yiyi is my close friend?
“No need for that. My big envelope was enough,” I said. Though I was touched, my teacher instinct kicked in. “I have other close friends too. Are you going to give them all that much?”
“Yes,” she replied softly.
I got a bit heated. “I have six or seven close friends and colleagues. Are you seriously giving each of them 10,000 yuan?”
“Yes. I have money,” she said.
“Damn, Si Jingnian, are you a rich lady? If you’re throwing money around, spend it on me instead.”
“Fine,” she said, opening her eyes but keeping her relaxed pose. She looked at me, all ruffled up.
From that angle, her almond-shaped eyes looked sharper, giving off a superior aura—like ordinary people didn’t matter to her.
And I was the ordinary person she was looking at.
“Fine, my foot! Don’t give it to me, and don’t give it to them!” I leaned close to her ear, gritting my teeth. “Next time we go to a friend’s wedding together, you give what I tell you to give, got it?”
“Yes, fine,” Si Jingnian said, a faint smile on her lips.
Of course, this talk didn’t mean much. Most of my other close friends barely know her and probably wouldn’t invite her to their weddings.
One friend from junior high did meet her during a college visit, but she’s already married and expecting a baby.
Speaking of which, I should probably buy her something.
With that in mind, I opened Taobao, picked out two sets of baby clothes, five packs of diapers, pacifiers, bottles, and other baby essentials, and had them delivered to her house.
Baby stuff is surprisingly expensive. After placing the order, I felt my wallet ache.
As we neared Jingshi, Qi Zhengyu called.
He asked when I’d arrive. I told him the time. He said he could pick me up and asked if we needed to drop Si Jingnian off first.
Si Jingnian said no, she’d take a taxi to her company to finish some work.
We planned to eat at a Thai restaurant, then catch a 9:10 PM comedy movie.
After hanging up, I sighed. “Time to show off my acting skills. I’ll pretend I know nothing.”
“You could skip it. We can investigate his personal life instead,” Si Jingnian said seriously, her eyes urging me to reconsider.
“That’d tip him off. If everything seems normal, he’ll keep cheating as usual,” I said.
Si Jingnian let out a small sigh. “Since you know he’s cheating, don’t get too close to him.”
“Too close?” I echoed. “You mean like kissing?”
Her ears turned red. Seriously? We’re adults. That word makes her blush?
“Yes,” she said, her eyes lowered and cheeks flushed.
I bent down quickly, shoving my face close to hers.
As expected, she flinched.
Panic flashed across her face.
I burst out laughing, keeping it quiet so I wouldn’t disturb others on the train.
From her angle, my laughing face probably looked twisted. Not my best look.
Trying to recover my image, I sat up straight, wiped off my smile, and said seriously, “No way. I won’t get close to him.”
Si Jingnian softly said, “Yes,” approving.
Getting close was out of the question.
Even before I knew about the cheating, we weren’t that physical. Early on, he’d been more forward, but my lukewarm responses made him back off. Kissing became rare.
Maybe that’s why he felt unsatisfied and found someone else?
Who cares! Women always overthink and blame themselves. Men just point fingers.
Stop overthinking, An Xiaoyu!
Cheaters can rot. Wait, cursing his family might be unfair—they didn’t cheat.
Damn, An Xiaoyu, what nonsense is in your head? I knocked my own skull.
At the station, I got into Qi Zhengyu’s passenger seat and gave Si Jingnian, who was waiting for her taxi, a reassuring smile.
I hoped she’d catch my signal.
I rambled on, “Text me the taxi plate, keep your location on, and call me when you reach the company. Eat dinner downstairs before working. Let me know what time you’re heading home. I’ll see if Zhengyu and I can pick you up, or I’ll come get you.”
If someone said that to me, I’d be annoyed.
But I couldn’t help it. It was late, and Si Jingnian is so pretty. I was genuinely worried.
She didn’t seem bothered. Her face stayed cool, but I sensed a hint of happiness.
By 7:00 PM, night had fallen. Looking at her beautiful face and figure in the dark, I still wasn’t at ease.
“I’ll wait till you’re in the taxi and snap the plate number.”
I turned to Qi Zhengyu. “Is that okay?”
He smiled. “Of course. Jingnian’s so pretty, you gotta be careful.”
Normally, I’d tease, “What, I’m not pretty?” But knowing the real him, I couldn’t be bothered.
Si Jingnian got into the taxi. I noted the plate, waved goodbye, and returned to the car.
Qi Zhengyu, sitting close, started driving.
Honestly, when he leaned in, I got goosebumps. It took all my strength not to jump away.
“Xiaoyu, the way you fussed over Si Jingnian earlier, I’m jealous,” he said, voice dripping with fake flirty jealousy.
Once you dislike someone, everything they say sounds gross.
I used to want someone mature and reliable who’d get jealous and flirty.
Now, Qi Zhengyu’s flirting just made me gag.
“Really?” I turned on the car light to reapply lipstick.
“Yeah. The way you were so thorough,” he said, smiling warmly. “You’ll definitely be a great mom. I’m so lucky.”
Lucky? You?
To be fair, Qi Zhengyu is better looking than average. A good mix of manly and boyish, with refined features. Tall, lean, and charming.
But inside, I was gagging.
Good thing I’m used to acting. I kept a straight face.
“I’ll definitely be a great mom,” I said. But it has nothing to do with you.
“We’ll have a daughter and spoil her together,” he said.
Then we reached the Thai restaurant. During dinner, I acted normal.
Luckily, we were never that close.
I watched for any changes in him, thinking of online advice for spotting cheaters—trash bins, tissue folding, and emoji use.
But I didn’t notice any red flags.
Maybe I just didn’t know him that well.
I noticed his cologne smelled different, but I wasn’t sure.
After dinner, Si Jingnian messaged me that she’d be home around 9:30 PM.
Since I’d be at the movie then, I told her to send the taxi plate and location and let me know when she got home.
During the movie, I kept thinking about how to catch this guy red-handed.
It was supposed to be funny, but I barely laughed.
On the drive home after, Qi Zhengyu was quiet.
I didn’t start a conversation either.
