My heart clenched inside my chest, and a fierce thumping began behind my ears. So they really did find out.

I forced myself to maintain a neutral expression, careful not to show any emotion or weakness. I looked up and, pretending to be surprised, asked my mom, “Who told you?”

My mother, who had initially looked like she was trying to test me, suddenly seemed uncertain. “Your Auntie Luo Lan,” she replied.

“Really?” I asked, genuinely surprised. I hadn’t expected Auntie Luo Lan to come out directly to Si Jingnian on my behalf.

But before I could think more about it, my dad interrupted. “Don’t listen to your mom. Your Auntie Luo Lan didn’t say anything outright. We figured it out ourselves. She’s been visiting us a lot over the past few months, always chatting with me and your mom. First, she asked how we felt about homosexuality. Then she asked what we would think if someone close to us was gay. And finally, she asked how we would react if our own child was gay.”

He continued, “Think about it. If she hadn’t discovered that Jingnian is gay, why would she come talk to us about all this? She probably couldn’t accept it at first and was trying to find someone who would understand.”

I was beginning to understand why my parents believed Si Jingnian was gay. “So, what did you say to her?”

It was one thing to have a misunderstanding, but I really wanted to know their answer.

“What else could we say? Since she seemed so worried, we told her it was completely normal. Lots of young people are like that these days. Your dad even went out of his way to look up a news story about two women in their seventies who lived together their whole lives to show your Auntie Luo Lan.”

So the implication was that they might not be entirely accepting, but they still tried to comfort Auntie Luo Lan by finding positive examples.

“But how do you both really feel about it?” I asked, unable to stop myself.

My mom suddenly looked at me suspiciously, as if she had realized something. “Why are you asking that, too? Let me tell you, you had better not be involved in something like this!”

A wave of helplessness washed over me. It was just as I had feared. My parents could not accept the idea that their daughter might be gay. “Why can’t a girl love another girl?”

“That’s not normal! It’s always been about men and women. Two women being together just doesn’t make sense. It’s unnatural.”

“Mom, haven’t you ever heard the saying that what exists is reasonable? You can’t control who you fall in love with. It’s like when you fell in love with Dad. You didn’t expect it to happen, did you? And didn’t Grandma disapprove at first? Didn’t she say Dad was too poor and had no future? But aren’t you and Dad happy now?”

“That is different,” my mom interrupted firmly. My dad looked at me with a hint of realization in his eyes.

Even though my heart was pounding, I was determined to speak up and earn some understanding and respect. Not only for myself, but also for Si Jingnian, and for everyone else who shares our experience. “Why is it different?”

My mom grew angry. “It just is! An Xiaoyu, what’s gotten into you? Why won’t you drop this topic?”

“You’re not gay too, are you?!”

“I am.” I gave up on persuasion and struggle. I looked directly at my father’s disappointed face and my mother’s shocked expression.

“How can that be?! You dated two boys! You were even engaged to Zhengyu!”

But even as my mother exploded in fury, I remained calm. After confessing, I felt an unexpected sense of peace. Even hearing Qi Zhengyu’s name did not stir any emotion in me.

“Mom, I was never truly in love with Qi Zhengyu. I only thought he was a good match. His family background, his appearance, and his personality all appeared to be a good match. But he cheated on me, and that showed me I had misjudged him.”

“Now I know I love a girl. Or rather, I should say, I love her, and she just happens to be a girl.”

“That’s not right. How could you like a girl…” My mother looked crushed. She leaned back into the sofa, her voice trembling. “No… you can’t…”

My dad gestured for me to stand up and led me into the study. He opened a window, leaned against the sill, and lit a cigarette. He took a long drag, then exhaled slowly. At that moment, he looked as if he had aged ten years. “You love Jingnian, don’t you?”

“Yes.” I admitted it. A heavy weight lifted from my chest. I began to feel calm again.

“No wonder… no wonder your aunt said all those things. We thought she was looking for guidance, but really, she was trying to help us understand.”

“Are you two together now?”

“Yes, we are.”

“Are you serious about this?”

“We both are. She already proposed to me, and I said yes.”

“You do know that same-s*x marriage isn’t legal here.”

“I know. That’s why we plan to get married abroad.”

“You were once engaged to Zhengyu. Are you sure you won’t back out this time?”

“Dad… this time is different. I truly love Jingnian. I even dream about marrying her. In my dreams, I am so happy. And every morning when I wake up and realize she’s really beside me, I still feel like I’m dreaming.”

“I just have one question for you. Even if society refuses to accept your relationship, even if your mother and I struggle to support you, and even if people talk behind your backs, will you still find happiness in being with her?”

“Dad…” Tears began to fall. I had considered all those things before, but his tone carried a note of reluctant understanding.

I looked him in the eyes and answered sincerely, “Dad, I really am happy. I don’t care what society or others say. I only care if you and Mom can support us. In this kind of environment, finding someone who truly loves you, understands you, and chooses to stay with you is already an incredibly rare and precious thing. I hope you and Mom can give us the strength to keep going.”

“You both know what a good person Jingnian is. What did I ever do to deserve her? All these years, she’s taken care of me, supported me, comforted me when I was sad, and helped me grow when I was trying to improve myself. Being with her is the greatest luck I’ve ever had.”

“Dad…”

The cigarette in his hand was almost completely burned. A long trail of ash fell onto his favorite Persian carpet, and he did not even notice. He sighed and said with resignation, “If she can make my daughter this happy, then what reason do I have to stop you?”

“Dad!” I threw my arms around him, wiping my tears on his shoulder. I was filled with gratitude. “Dad, you’re the best!”

My dad pushed me away. The wrinkles on his handsome face twisted into an expression of annoyance. He picked up a handkerchief from the table and began wiping his shoulder. “Do you think I didn’t notice you wiped your snot on me?”

“Hehehehehe.” I grinned at him, heart brimming with peace. Half of the thing I feared most had now been resolved.

“Sigh. Jingnian being willing to be with you really is the greatest stroke of luck in your life. If I were her dad, I wouldn’t even want you as a daughter-in-law,” he muttered, looking at me like I was a child.

“Says who? Jingnian’s dad likes me a lot! It’s her good fortune to be with me too. She’s liked me for thirteen years!” I said, feeling proud.

“Is that so?” he asked. I was just beginning to tell him the story of our love, my voice soft with shyness and excitement. However, before I could say more, he interjected with a wry smile, “Hard to believe someone as amazing as Jingnian has such terrible taste.”

I was speechless.

I puffed up with frustration again. Am I really your biological daughter?

…

After the teasing, I grew serious again. “What about Mom? What are we going to do about her? Dad, you have to help me. My future happiness depends on you.”

“A wise man always has a plan,” he said, pretending to stroke an imaginary long beard like an ancient sage.

Now that I had passed this important task to my dad, I felt much more at ease. After all, they had been together for over thirty years. He must know how to handle her.

After taking a shower, I called Si Jingnian and told her what had happened. I left out a few details, especially the emotional speech I gave my dad.

I told her, happily, that my dad would support us. She was overjoyed.

She hadn’t expected me to come out to my family on the very first night I came home. She said, “I really wish I could have stood by your side just now.”

“I’m sorry, Xiaoyu, for making you face this all alone.”

I told her it was okay. If she had been there, it might have been even harder to explain everything.

She said she would come visit on the third day of the New Year. I replied that we would see, depending on how my mom was doing.

She agreed.
