The orange kitten was named Roly-Poly, while the American Shorthair was dubbed Scrappy-Legs. Roly-Poly reflected our hopes for the orange kitten’s future, while Scrappy-Legs earned her name from being a downright menace. While normal kittens spend most of their day napping like Roly-Poly, Scrappy-Legs spent her days leaping around. When I returned from work one day, the sofa cover was mysteriously at the front door, and leaves from the windowsill plants were scattered across the floor.

This little rascal kept scratching at my door at night too, and only mine. She completely ignored Si Jingnian’s door. When I groggily opened the door, she would strut in like a general inspecting her territory.

After being woken up several nights in a row by something heavy landing on me, I realized it was always Roly-Poly.

After several sleepless nights, I told Si Jingnian I was going to try something new. If it didn’t work, I would move into her room and let Scrappy-Legs do whatever she wanted with mine.

Si Jingnian agreed. I observed her expression closely but didn’t detect the slightest hint of joy. I felt indignant.

I decided to tire the kittens out each evening. After work, I would take them for walks with little harnesses.

At first, the two were scared, especially by stray cats and dogs on the road. But over time, they adjusted to this new routine and even began to love it. They would try to pick fights with huskies when I wasn’t watching. Thankfully, both owners used leashes.

Our kittens became local celebrities, known as the well-known walking cat duo.

And the plan worked. Scrappy-Legs stopped clawing at my door at night. I told Si Jingnian my bed-sharing plan was canceled. She remained indifferent, which frustrated me deeply.

To be honest, it had been almost half a month since the kittens arrived, and we hadn’t done it since.

I wasn’t trying to deceive myself by saying I wanted to move into Si Jingnian’s room for any other reason. I just felt she could at least extend the invitation so I could have an excuse.

Then the roles reversed. She took the initiative.

But just as I was starting to enjoy the moment, the kittens leaped onto the bed, meowing loudly.

Si Jingnian and I froze. I remembered I hadn’t shut her door. How could I forget we had two feline kids at home? We couldn’t continue, not in front of them.

They seemed to think I was being attacked or something. Their meows were shrill and ghostly.

Si Jingnian kissed me hard, clearly venting her frustration. I bit her lip twice in return. I considered it a form of punishment.

After a quick rinse, she changed into her running gear and went out for a morning jog. I took a relaxing shower to calm down.

At 7:30 AM, she knocked on my door. I asked if she forgot her key. She said yes.

That was odd. She never forgot her key.

When I opened the door, she stood there in her athletic wear, no makeup, beaming with energy. In her arms was a giant bouquet of red roses. In the winter morning light, both her rosy face and the vibrant flowers looked like a dreamy painting.

I instantly remembered it was my birthday. My heart warmed, and I reached for the bouquet.

But Si Jingnian shut the door behind her, knelt on one knee at the entrance, and pulled out a deep blue velvet box like a magician.

My eyes widened in shock.

She parted her lips as if to speak, then paused, clearly nervous. Her lips trembled slightly. Finally, she asked, “Xiaoyu, will you marry me?”

Tears burst from my eyes, but I still pressed for more. “Aren’t you going to give a heartfelt speech?”

“I…” She tried to speak, but I cut her off.

I dropped to one knee too, facing her. “Yes, yes, of course I will.”

I tossed aside the bouquet and the box and threw my arms around her.

I could feel our hearts pounding together.

She hugged me tighter and whispered, her voice choked with tears, “This is amazing, Xiaoyu. I’ve never been this happy in my life.”

I held her even tighter. “Me too.”

Then I gently pulled away. Our foreheads touched, noses brushed, and I kissed her eyes, brushing away her tears. I kissed her nose, her philtrum, and finally, her lips.

We kissed deeply until my alarm broke the spell. It was already 8:10 AM. I had a morning meeting, and I had set a reminder to leave early.

I pulled away reluctantly, wiped my saliva off her lips, then couldn’t resist kissing her again.

Si Jingnian picked up the bouquet and the box and opened them to reveal a dazzling diamond ring. At first glance, it looked blinding, but on closer inspection, the design was quite refined. I couldn’t tell if it was a princess cut or some other style, but it was beautiful.

She slid the ring onto my middle finger. It fit perfectly.

I started giggling like a fool, unable to believe I was really getting married. Even when she nudged me to get dressed, I was still in a daze.

She helped me with my wool hat and gloves and walked me to the door.

I asked, “Aren’t you going to be late for work?”

She ruffled my white wool hat. “Silly.”

She held my hand and walked me to the company building. I felt like I was walking on cotton candy, floating in bliss.

As we walked, I took off my glove so I could hold her hand properly.

She asked, “Aren’t your hands cold?”

“Not at all. My heart is warm.”

“Don’t you have to work today? How do you have time to walk me?”

She said she took the morning off. I asked if it was just to give me the ring.

“Not only that. I wanted to walk you to work too.”

“It’s only a fifteen-minute walk. No need for all this.”

She gripped my hand tighter. “I want to walk my fiancée to work.”

Oh. My. God.

That line shot straight into my heart. I shook our joined hands in joy.

“But what if I said no? Wouldn’t your day off be wasted?”

“Or are you that confident I’d say yes?”

She kept a calm face, but her grip tightened a little too much. “No, not confident. But who else would you marry if you won’t marry me?”

“Hmph! That’s totally possible, okay?”

“Tell me, what would you have done if I said no?” I asked while waiting in line for scallion noodles, nudging her arm.

She gave in to my pestering. “I would cry and beg you not to go to work. Would you believe me?”

“Ew! I don’t believe you.”

“Then what do you think I’d do?”

“Let me think… You’d pretend it was nothing, but inside you’d be devastated. Right? Then you’d hide the ring and propose again later. Right?”

“Wrong.”

“Huh?”

She accepted the noodles from the server and calmly added vinegar and chili.

I tugged at her anxiously. “Tell me!”

She smiled at my impatience. “Honestly, I never thought you’d say no.”

Her smile and words were just too much.

I couldn’t stop grinning even at work. When Feng Yiyun saw me, she looked at me with disdain. “Why so happy, Xiaoyu?”

“Heehee, not telling you. I’ll tell you at dinner tonight.”

I hadn’t even told her I was dating Si Jingnian.

Might as well tell her everything tonight!

It was a slow day at work. I just had to upload some lesson records and chat with two new hires. The heating was on, so I took off my gloves. The engagement ring sparkled brilliantly.

One of the new teachers didn’t notice, but Guo Xiaoting, who had been here a while, did.

“Ooh, Miss An, are you getting married soon?”

“If you’re so nosy, use that energy to prep your lessons. Winter break is coming.”

“This doesn’t interfere with anything. Come on, tell me!”

“Not yet. Don’t spread rumors or I’ll come audit your classes.”

“No!” Guo Xiaoting shrank in fear.

At lunch, Feng Yiyun noticed my ring and dragged me into a small classroom for interrogation.

She wouldn’t even let me eat my eel rice. That stuff is rare and precious!

“Spill it! Everything!” She cornered me and grabbed my ringed hand like an East Factory enforcer.

“That’s it. We’re getting married,” I said, pulling my hand back and pushing her away with zero mercy.

“What? With who? The person you wouldn’t tell me about?”

“Yes.” I calmly flexed my sore hand and picked up my chopsticks.

“Is he coming tonight? What does he do? How tall is he? Family? Handsome? Photos? When did he propose?”

“Too many questions. You’ll meet her tonight. Ask her yourself. Help me vet her.”

“You already said yes! What’s the point of vetting?”

“People cancel engagements all the time. I’m confident you’ll like her.”

“Argh! Can’t you at least give me a little hint?”

“Spoilers ruin the fun. Just look forward to it.”

She pouted but perked up when I mentioned the dinner party. Then she handed me my birthday gift, which was a holiday lipstick set in very bold colors. Most needed layering to look wearable.

After work, we headed to a riverside restaurant near Cao Youyou’s place. Shockingly, she had booked out the entire 98th floor.

Si Jingnian and I had been there before, but I never thought Youyou was rich enough to book the whole place.

At the 98th floor, a server led us to the dressing room for evening gowns. The outfits were prepared by Si Jingnian in advance. Yiyun had no clue and was left stunned.

The restaurant looked completely different. Instead of tables, there was a circular dance floor in the middle, with a six-person band tucked behind. From our angle, only the pianist’s back and a violinist’s profile were visible. A waltz serenade played gently.

To the left was a buffet table with desserts. There were macarons, cupcakes, soufflés, mini scones, and tea sandwiches.

To the right stood a round table set for six guests. Cao Youyou and Jiang Yiyi were already seated and chatting quietly, but Si Jingnian had not yet appeared.

As we sat down, I asked, “Where’s Jingnian?”

The moment I put down my clutch, three servers rolled out a birthday cake. The music changed to the birthday song, and the dance floor began to descend, revealing the full band. The pianist stood up, continuing to play. That elegant figure was too familiar.

She turned around in a flowing white dress that shimmered like moonlight.

Yiyun let out a sharp gasp, her breath catching in surprise. Meanwhile, Jiang Yiyi and Youyou began to sing in soft, harmonious voices.

My love walked slowly toward me.

She dismissed the servers, and the restaurant lights dimmed. Only the sparklers on the cake lit the room, casting little starlight around like Lunar New Year toys.

She reached me, her voice warm. “Happy birthday, Xiaoyu.”

“Close your eyes and make a wish.”

I did, wishing for forever with Si Jingnian.

I blew out the candles. The lights came back.

She sat beside me. Dishes were served.

When I picked up my knife, Jiang Yiyi pointed at my left hand and shrieked, “What the hell? You two are getting married?”

She shook Youyou’s invisible shoulder strap. Youyou looked mad at first but was soon distracted.

She glanced between me and Si Jingnian.

“Isn’t this too fast? It’s only been half a year.”

Yiyun, acting smug for knowing first, said, “Right? I noticed the ring this morning but she wouldn’t say who it was. Said I had to wait till tonight.”

“Wait, where’s your fiancée?” Yiyun looked confused.

Yiyi and Youyou stared at her like she was clueless.

I sipped my cream of mushroom soup and squeezed Si Jingnian’s hand. “Yiyun, my fiancée is Jingnian.”

Yiyun was stunned. Her fork fell. She stared, mouth agape.

“You serious?”

“Of course.” I raised our interlocked hands.

“Oh my god. Oh my god!”

A flood of questions tumbled out, starting with when I had realized I was attracted to women. When did we fall for each other? Who confessed? Was our s*x life good? And, blushing, what do girls even do?

Yiyi answered most of those. At the last one, she smirked wickedly and offered her collection of comics, anime, and tasteful films, immediately sharing them via cloud drive.

After dinner, Si Jingnian led me to the dance floor for a swing-style dance. She led as the male role.

The others joined, dancing with the servers.

A waiter asked Yiyun for her number before she left.

Perfect evening.

Later that night, Si Jingnian gave me an extra birthday gift.

She let me top.

I scratched her by accident, and a trace of blood appeared. She didn’t say it hurt, but guilt still welled up in my chest.

Maybe I should just stay a bottom from now on.
