After summer vacation ended, I felt so exhausted it was as if I had shed a layer of skin. I stepped on the scale, expecting to see a drop in weight. To my shock, I had gained two pounds. How did that make any sense?

I felt completely drained, like a worn-out dog. I pinched the flesh on my stomach and felt utterly defeated, almost ready to cry.

In the living room, I curled up in Si Jingnian’s arms on the couch and complained about the weight gain. She playfully pinched the soft flesh on my belly and said she liked it.

I kicked her in protest.

She laughed, caught my foot, and then slid her hand down to squeeze my toes. “It feels really nice.”

It tickled too much. I tried to kick free, but she held on tightly.

Annoyed, I threw myself forward, covered her upper body, and bit down on her tempting collarbone. I didn’t hold back. She let out a muffled groan, and I quickly licked the spot twice, trying to soothe the pain.

Embarrassed, I pulled away and rested my head in the crook of her arm, turning my face as if nothing had happened.

Si Jingnian chuckled, leaned down, and cupped my face. She gently turned it back toward her.

Her familiar scent washed over me, making my whole body soften.

Her face was incredibly close. Her straight nose lightly brushed against mine, and her soft pink lips hovered just millimeters away. Her eyes sparkled like starlight, dazzling and bright. The fire in her gaze made my head spin. I lifted my head instinctively and closed the gap between us.

The kiss was slow and tender.

We held each other close, our lips and breath mingling.

It was strange. That simple kiss felt even more entrancing than anything more passionate.

I had no idea how long we stayed like that before we finally pulled apart.

I sat up and gently rested her head on my lap to let her relax. I had been leaning on her for a while.

Si Jingnian lay obediently across my legs, her hair cascading softly. She shifted her head slightly, finding the most comfortable spot, and sighed. “It’s so nice to lie on something soft and warm.”

I puffed up in indignation like an angry pufferfish and nudged her head off my lap.

I stood up, planning to head to the bedroom, but she reached out and pulled me back. “Xiaoyu, don’t go.”

Unwillingly, I nestled back into her arms on the couch.

We started discussing our upcoming trip to Australia. I mentioned that I wanted to switch to a different position at work. I couldn’t keep doing front-line teaching forever. The holidays and weekends were just too tiring. Si Jingnian immediately supported the idea and suggested I start with a training post. She even looked excited.

The training position would definitely be less demanding. I wouldn’t have to teach intensive classes, and during the holiday rush, I would have more downtime. Thinking about the higher salary and more free time made me excited too.

But then I noticed something strange. Why did Si Jingnian seem even happier than I was? I asked her.

Her cheeks flushed with excitement, and she nervously bit her lower lip. “Because we’ll have more time together,” she said.

So that’s what had her glowing.

It felt like a beam of sunlight warming me in the middle of winter. I leaned over and gave her a happy kiss on the cheek.

After submitting my transfer request, I started the two-month training program.

But barely two weeks into it, the day of our Australia trip arrived.

Our first destination was Sydney. Just like our last trip, we stayed in a vacation rental. It was a three-story villa built in a style that reflected classic Australian architecture. It was on the outskirts of the city, which meant our chances of seeing wild animals weren’t very high.

Our guide said we still might see kangaroos. After all, there were so many in Australia that people had even started selling kangaroo meat.

Oh, and this time, the guide wasn’t one of Si Jingnian’s old admirers.

I joked about it to her, and she gave me a look that was both amused and helpless.

I turned away from her and made a point of whining a few times. I complained that no girls ever pursued me, and said it just wasn’t fair.

Si Jingnian wrapped her arms around my waist from behind. Her breath was warm against my ear.

The sensation made me shiver.

She spoke with a tone that blended jealousy and contentment. “Honestly, I’m glad no one’s chasing after you. That way, I never have to worry about someone stealing you away.”

“What kind of logic is that?” I was touched by her thinking, but it bruised my pride. It was such a ridiculous conclusion.

So I pushed back.

I twisted out of her arms, turned around to face her, and gave her a serious look. I clung to her and challenged her directly. “Why do you think no one’s interested in me? Are you saying I’m not attractive?”

“You’re incredibly attractive.” Si Jingnian answered like someone with a strong sense of survival.

I snickered inwardly but rolled my eyes outwardly. “Even if no one’s chasing me, I can still go chase someone else.”

“You’d better not!” Si Jingnian snapped. Her anger boiled to the surface.

“Why not?” I raised an eyebrow and looked at her with mischief.

“You just can’t.” Her cool face was now colored with frustration, which only made me more eager to tease her.

“Too bad. If I say I can, then I can.” I grinned like a smug villain.

But then Si Jingnian suddenly relaxed. “Fine,” she said.

What did that mean? Was she really letting me go? Was she trying to break up with me?

My mind went blank. I couldn’t even hold my fake smile.

Leaning back against the kitchen counter, Si Jingnian studied my reaction. Then she burst out laughing, her face filled with amusement.

“I said you could chase someone else.”

“What?!” I was so stunned, I couldn’t even keep my arms crossed.

“But with how slow you run, I doubt you could catch anyone other than me.”

“I’d let you catch me any day.”

Only then did I realize what she meant, and my face turned bright red.

Where had that sweet line come from? It was completely unexpected and incredibly embarrassing.

“Si Jingnian, you evil woman.” I covered my flushed cheeks and scolded her.

She approached me with a gentle smile, taking slow, deliberate steps. Her arms were open, clearly inviting me into a warm embrace.

I walked into her embrace.

Si Jingnian gently ran her fingers through my hair and whispered, “Xiaoyu, no matter how many people are chasing after me, I know in my heart that you’re the only one I’ll ever love.”

“But I can’t always tell what you’re thinking. I can’t be sure if you feel the same.”

So it turned out that in our relationship, Si Jingnian was actually the one who felt more insecure.

I placed both hands on her arms and looked into her eyes, which were brimming with affection. I made a vow. “Jingnian, I’ve never been so certain of anything. No one else could ever make me happier than you.”

“And I want to bring you that same happiness.”

“But sometimes, I get scared too. What if one day, you stop loving me?”

“That will never happen.”

The air between us grew warm and charged. Si Jingnian held me close and gently lifted me onto the wooden kitchen counter.

Amid the quiet gasps and tangled breaths, we lost ourselves in each other.

Later, she cradled me in the bathtub, playing with my messy hair and gently nibbling my ear. In a husky voice, she whispered, “Don’t think I didn’t catch that line from Friends.”

I was speechless, completely defenseless as she launched another round of playful attacks.
