Lately, I have been full of energy at work. My spirits have been unusually high. Many people have already asked me if something good had happened.

Each time, I would just laugh foolishly. Maybe it was too obvious, because everyone started guessing that I must be in love.

Both students and coworkers teased me, saying I reeked of love from head to toe.

I did not care what they said. Every day felt like I was floating on clouds.

Of course, anyone who had a girlfriend like Si Jingnian would probably laugh in their sleep too.

It felt just like winning the lottery jackpot.

Whenever I thought about seeing Si Jingnian after work, I wished time would speed up a little.

I sometimes remembered how much I used to look down on couples who could not bear to be apart. But now I thought that perhaps I had matured. I had just seen too little of the world before.

I was instantly confronted by reality, as if the universe itself had decided to humble me.

When work finally ended, I headed to the supermarket to buy groceries. I was brimming with excitement. Lately, Si Jingnian had also been trying not to work overtime. On the nights she got home early, we would even cook dinner together.

Tonight she seemed a bit busy. She texted me, telling me not to wait for her for dinner.

She said she had to work overtime.

I told her I would bring food to her.

She refused at first. “No need. It’s too much trouble for you.”

I sent a voice message with a touch of playful complaint. “Too much trouble for who? Who am I to you? Say it clearly!”

After two seconds, she sent back a voice message. There was laughter in her voice, light and warm. She sounded like she was in a good mood. “You are my girlfriend.”

“That’s right. A girlfriend should bring you food and check on you. Shouldn’t you be happy?”

“Or do you have something to hide that you don’t want me to discover?”

“Did you fall for the new assistant or one of the new employees? Or maybe it’s a female CEO from the client side!” I meant it as a playful joke, but the more I imagined all those young girls and brilliant female executives she might encounter, the more flustered I felt.

Even I started to believe it.

“What strange things are you imagining in that little head of yours? Fine, come over,” she said, probably helpless in the face of my wild imagination. “But don’t disturb me while I’m working.”

“Hee hee hee, my head is filled with nothing but you.” I added a rainbow fart to seal it.
“Alright then, I promise not to disturb you.”

I really did not plan to disturb her. While she worked, I would quietly play on my phone or read a book beside her.

After buying the groceries and getting home, I made a thick omelet, seaweed mackerel rice balls, and beef curry.

While cooking, I sent her a message on WeChat to let her know she could have a bite in advance.

After all, it would still take me a while to get there.

I plated the dishes into a lunchbox and added cherry tomatoes and boiled broccoli for garnish.

After packing it into a thermal bag, I called a taxi.

The distance was quite far. I felt so rich taking a cab like that.

At 8:10 PM, I arrived at Si Jingnian’s company.

I was already familiar with the place. There were quite a few people working overtime tonight.

The receptionist was still there. She greeted me kindly and asked who I was here to see.

I held up the lunch bag and said I was bringing food to Si Jingnian.

The receptionist blinked in surprise, then murmured, “Director Si hasn’t eaten yet?”

“Yes.”

I smiled at her and was about to leave, but she called out to me again.

I turned around, puzzled, and looked at her. She hesitated for a moment before asking, “Um, miss, are you a close friend of Director Si?”

“Mhm. That’s right.” My heart swelled with joy at the thought of Si Jingnian. We were much more than just good friends.

“Then… do you know if Director Si is single?” The receptionist looked at me with hopeful curiosity.

“Uh…” Her question came so suddenly that my brain stalled. I instinctively avoided answering. “Why do you want to know that?”

The receptionist folded her hands together with a shy smile. “Oh, I’m just curious. Director Si is such an impressive person. I was wondering what kind of man her boyfriend might be.”

Sorry, not a boyfriend, a girlfriend. I felt a little flutter of pride in my heart and lifted my chin proudly.

Especially since I was standing right in front of her.

As for whether I was impressive or not, thinking about it made me a bit self-conscious.

I glanced down at my red dress. The bow at the chest was a little crooked from my hurried steps earlier. My wavy hair, resting on my collarbone, looked slightly frizzy.

Afraid the food might get cold, I had not stopped to fix myself before heading out.

I probably did not look very impressive.

I stepped back slightly, trying to straighten my posture.

“That’s not something I can disclose,” I said, straightening the bow at my chest and mimicking the tone of celebrities being interviewed on TV.

“But,” I added with a mischievous smile, “I could risk my life and ask Si Jingnian for you.”

“Ah—no, no, that’s alright!” The receptionist frantically waved her hands to refuse.

“Don’t worry. I won’t say it’s from you,” I assured her.

“Really?” The receptionist relaxed a little. Her big almond eyes sparkled. “You have to tell me what she says, okay?”

She cupped a hand by her mouth and whispered, “There’s a company betting pool. The odds for her being single are one to thirteen.”

“What did you bet on?” I asked, intrigued.

“Single, of course. Even President Li from Rongtian International failed to win her over,” she said with certainty, revealing a piece of gossip I had not heard from Si Jingnian.

“Is this President Li very impressive?” I asked casually.

“Yes. He’s one of the most eligible bachelors in Jingshi. Handsome, successful, and incredibly devoted. He has been pursuing Director Si for over six months. He sends flowers every morning and comes to pick her up after work.

“But Director Si always sends the flowers back and drives home herself.”

“Still, I think if President Li keeps at it, she’ll agree eventually…”

I did not continue chatting with the receptionist. When I reached the assistant area outside Si Jingnian’s office, I nodded politely to the staff there. Then I wiped the smile off my face, put on a neutral expression, and stormed into her office with the lunchbox.

Si Jingnian was sitting at her desk, writing and sketching.

When she heard me come in, she looked up and gave me a gentle smile. There was a trace of fatigue in her eyes.

That trace of tiredness softened my jealousy just a bit.

I set the food down on the coffee table and said, “Time to eat.”

She stood up and moved to the sofa to start eating. I turned my head and stared at the glass wall in her office.

“It’s delicious,” she said after finishing, praising my cooking.

“Hmph.” I snorted through my nose and silently began tidying up the table.

Si Jingnian did not leave. She stood nearby, watching me clean up.

“Go back to work. I’m going to your break room to lie down for a bit.” There was a small rest area in her office with a single bed.

I was not actually sleepy. I just needed a moment alone to work through my jealousy.

After I finished speaking, I stood up and walked toward the break room. Just as I was about to close the door, her hand stopped it. I quickly opened it again, afraid I might hurt her.

She slipped inside through the gap and closed the door behind her.

The rest area was cramped. There was only a narrow space between the bed and the wall to open the door. With two adult women inside, the small room felt even more crowded.

I tried to create some distance and pretended nothing was wrong. I changed into slippers and sat on the bed.

Si Jingnian looked down at me from above.

She did not ask me what was wrong.

She just stared straight at me, and the intensity of her gaze made me squirm.

Why wasn’t she asking? How was I supposed to confront her if she didn’t ask? How was I supposed to pour out all my jealousy onto her?

I was like an ant on a hot pan, sweating from my forehead. Though that might have been due to the weak air conditioning.

I finally opened my mouth hesitantly. “I heard that President Li from Rongtian International has been pursuing you…”

“Sending you flowers every day… coming to see you after work every day…”

I pouted, thinking of all the rivals I might have. I felt a little wronged.

I looked up and met Si Jingnian’s eyes. With my lips trembling, I mumbled, “I… I’m jealous…”

I opened my arms and leaned toward her, whining softly, “Hold me…”

A shadow passed through Si Jingnian’s gaze. Her eyes dimmed slightly. She knelt on the edge of the bed and pulled me into her arms.

Her embrace was warm and filled with her familiar scent.

I buried myself contentedly in her neck and took a deep breath. It was like catnip to a cat. I was addicted to the smell of Si Jingnian.

Her embrace was just as intoxicating.

She stroked my hair, slowly moving her hand from the top of my head to the back of my skull.

That spot had always been one of my most sensitive. As her fingers slid through my hair, a tingling sensation rushed over my scalp. A current seemed to run through my nerves. I shivered slightly in her embrace, and a soft sound slipped from my lips.

“Mmm…”

The moment that sound came out, it felt like the air in the break room froze.
