I was able to stay focused while lecturing.

But when my students began their writing assignments, I swore I tried my best not to glance outside. Still, I could not stop myself from peeking out the right-side window.

My eyes darted toward the opposite building’s windows, where I found Si Jingnian.

The two buildings were not close. I could only make out a general sense of what was happening on the other side. It was Saturday, and the café was packed with people.

But by the window that faced my classroom, there was only one person sitting alone at a booth made for four.

From such a distance, there was no way I could see her face clearly. But her distinctive aura made her stand out.

I was certain it was her.

Another reason I felt sure was because she kept turning her head to look straight at my building.

My expression remained neutral, but inside I was giggling. Silly girl.

She really was not worried about straining her neck?

During break, I turned my swivel chair toward the window and stared at her. Then I pulled out my phone and sent her a message.

Peaceful New Year: Doesn’t your neck hurt from twisting it like that?

I saw Si Jingnian glance down at her phone.

Si Jingnian: No. You’re the one sneaking peeks at me.

Peaceful New Year: Excuse me, you’re the pot calling the kettle black. I wasn’t looking at you. My students said there was a weird lady staring at us from across the street.

Si Jingnian: Oh really?

Her skeptical reply made me nervous. I was best at covering up nerves with mock arrogance.

Peaceful New Year: Hmph. I told you, I wasn’t looking at you.

Si Jingnian: Okay, sure.

Peaceful New Year: Okay your head. I order you not to look at me either. You’re ruining my teaching mood.

I set down my phone, feeling defeated. Why did I say that? That wasn’t how I felt at all.

Sure enough, during the next class, Si Jingnian no longer looked over. She kept her head down and continued working.

I silently fumed.

So she really stopped looking?

What was her deal?

She never listens when she’s supposed to. But the moment I tell her not to do something, she obeys immediately.

Like that time I told her not to kiss me… She didn’t listen at all.

Just thinking about it made me blush.

But now she was being so obedient. Hmph.

At 5:30 p.m., my supervisor informed me that the next class was canceled.

I felt instantly liberated. I glanced toward the café and saw Si Jingnian still working. A thought crossed my mind.

I asked a colleague from the classroom next door to take over.

I grabbed my bag and laptop and slipped out.

I had never been to this café before. The greeter told me it was full. I replied that a friend was waiting for me.

She gave me a knowing smile and led me to a booth on the left row.

I saw Si Jingnian at the fourth booth.

She was sitting with her back to me. Oddly, across from her was a rather handsome man. He looked young, dressed in a custom suit that practically screamed its expensive price tag.

He was smiling warmly at her. I stopped near the third booth and gestured for the hostess to wait. I thanked her quietly.

I pulled out my phone and pretended to message someone.

From this spot, I could just hear the man’s polished voice.

“Waiting for someone? I saw you sitting here all afternoon.”

“Got stood up? Or is this just an excuse to get rid of me?”

I frowned. This guy was seriously annoying.

What kind of awful pickup lines were these?

I couldn’t see Si Jingnian’s expression, but her voice carried a trace of irritation. “Sir, please step aside. My girlfriend is on her way.”

“Girlfriend?” The man paused. A flash of surprise crossed his face, followed by arrogant disbelief. “Pretending to be gay to get rid of me? That trick’s old, sweetheart.”

I had heard enough. I walked over and knocked my knuckle against the marble table. “Even if a girl was pretending to be gay, it would still be to avoid you. Don’t you think about why that might be? Maybe because you’re that awful.”

The man’s face flickered with embarrassment.

Si Jingnian’s voice came from my left. “You’re here?”

The man looked flustered. “So you’re the one she’s been waiting for. My apologies.”

He stood up and gave up the seat. Then he pulled a business card from his pocket and placed it on the table.

“Zhao Yu, from Maohua International. Use my name when you shop, and you’ll both get a 30% discount.”

He took a step away, then turned back like he just remembered something. He winked at Si Jingnian. “WeChat and phone number are the same.”

Then he finally left.

Fuming, I plopped down beside Si Jingnian. No way I was sitting where that guy had been.

I puffed out my cheeks, picked up the shiny gold business card, and stretched out my right hand to Si Jingnian.

She instinctively took my hand.

I pulled away with a scowl. “Who wants to hold your hand? Give me your phone.”

She placed her hand back on the table and passed me her phone.

I tried to unlock it but got blocked by the password screen.

I angrily tried her birthday. Then mine. Both wrong.

What the heck? It wasn’t my birthday?

Si Jingnian sighed and quietly said, “060905. The day we first met.”

My anger softened.

I unlocked her phone, opened WeChat, and went to add a new contact using Zhao Yu’s phone number.

Si Jingnian reached out and snatched the card from me.

“What are you doing?”

I looked at her seriously. “Adding that handsome guy to your contacts.”

“Xiaoyu…” She tore the card into pieces and threw it into the ashtray. “I won’t add him.”

“Trust me.”

I clutched her phone, but deep down, I hated myself.

I looked so ugly when I was jealous. Of course I believed she would never add that guy. But I still minded it. Si Jingnian was too amazing. I truly felt I wasn’t good enough for her.

So many people liked her. I was scared. I felt insecure. That’s why I got jealous so easily.

And I couldn’t even be honest about it. Why was I like this?

I lifted my butt and leaned forward to hug her. I didn’t want us to be like other couples who doubted and misunderstood each other.

I wanted to talk honestly and face our problems together.

Lying on her shoulder, I said softly, “Jingnian, you’re too amazing. I always feel like I don’t deserve you. I…”

“No—”

She tried to speak, but I cut her off.

“Let me finish.”

“You’re too amazing. I have so many rivals. Each one looks better than me, has a better figure, is more talented. I feel insecure. I’ll try to relax and not overthink things. I’ll work on becoming better. But you have to stay away from others too.”

My face was pressed to her shoulder. My voice came out like a murmur.

“Okay?”

“Okay.” Her hands gently stroked my back.

She pulled me upright and looked me in the eye.

“No matter who else is out there, you need to know that I only like you. I’ve liked you for thirteen years. For the next thirteen and the thirteen after that, I’ll keep liking you.”

I bit my lip as tears filled my eyes.

How could someone say something so moving?

In comparison, my doubts felt childish. My suspicion was an insult to her deep love.

An insult to her feelings for me.

Si Jingnian quickly pulled out a handkerchief to wipe my tears.

I stayed frozen in place. My body burned as if it were in hell. The seat beneath me felt like it would melt from my heat.

How could I ever close the gap between us?

How could I make up for those thirteen years she loved me?

I wanted her so badly.

I wanted to kiss her all over. I wanted to kiss her until her eyes grew hazy, until she reached her peak, until she and I became one.

I felt a fiery desire erupt from the depths of my heart. I had become a woman consumed by lust.

I wanted her so badly. But I did not know what to do.
