After returning to the country, I resumed work.

For the first few days, I could not quite shake off the holiday mood, and I was sluggish at work.

Fortunately, neither Si Jingnian nor I were too busy in the beginning. About a week later, she received a new assignment, and my tasks settled into a steady rhythm too.

Lately, images from our trip kept surfacing in my mind. For example, my daydreams while showering, the moment when Si Jingnian called me her girlfriend, my lips brushing her lipstick mark, me entering her room without clothes, and that feeling under my hand in the hot spring…

These thoughts appeared over and over again in my dreams.

Too often…

I almost wondered if something was wrong with me.

Every time I woke up, I would feel ashamed, then pretend nothing happened and carry on like normal.

That weekend, I went home, and Si Jingnian accompanied me.

It worked out well since she could also visit her family.

Si Jingnian drove me to my building and carried the supplements we had bought up to my place.

My parents were both retired and stayed home. My mom’s main job now was dancing in the square and matchmaking. My dad mostly read, traveled, or played chess. Otherwise, he surfed the internet and read the news.

I unlocked the door. Inside, my mom was lying on the sofa in her pajamas, watching a drama about mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. She even had a face mask on.

It was still early in the morning…

I stepped inside, changed into slippers, and greeted her. “Hi, Mom.”

My mom glanced at me through the gap in her face mask and answered flatly, “You’re back.”

That was definitely my real mom. Not even a trace of excitement?

I stepped aside to reveal Si Jingnian behind me. “Mom, Jingnian came too.”

My mom immediately sat up in excitement, and her face mask fell off.

She tossed it into the trash and stood up to put on slippers. Rubbing her face to absorb the essence from the mask, she looked at Si Jingnian with a warm and glowing gaze.

“Jingnian, you came.”

“Old An, Old An, come here. Jingnian and Xiaoyu are back together.”

Who is really your daughter here?

My dad heard this and dropped his thermos, rushing over from the balcony.

When he saw Si Jingnian, his face lit up with a gentle smile. He did not even spare me a glance.

I pouted, feeling left out.

“Hello, Uncle and Auntie.” Si Jingnian stepped forward and handed over the gifts and supplements.

“Oh, you didn’t have to bring anything to our home.”

“It’s only proper.”

“You came and Xiaoyu did not even give us a heads-up!” My mom glared at me. “Now I haven’t prepared anything special. Old An, hurry to the market and buy some ribs and bass. I will cook something nice for Jingnian today.”

“Mom, if Jingnian had not come, what would you have prepared for me?” I could not believe she had nothing ready for me.

“Yesterday’s leftovers.”

Seriously?? Is this really my mom?

“Auntie, it’s fine. I will be heading back home later anyway,” Si Jingnian said.

“Oh, don’t be in a rush. Just stay and have a meal here. Are your parents home? Maybe they can come too.”

“Mom, forget it. Jingnian’s parents live a bit far away, so it’s inconvenient.” I was telling the truth. Her family lived in the outskirts of Liushi, while we were downtown. It was a bit of a trip.

“Maybe next time, we can invite them over.”

“Jingnian, stay here for lunch today. In the afternoon, I will go with you to your place, and we can have dinner there.” I suddenly remembered I had not seen her parents in a long time, so I suggested it.

My mom gave me another glare. “You are not worried about bothering others?”

I stuck out my tongue.

Si Jingnian smiled and explained to my mom, “Not at all. My parents really like Xiaoyu. Every time I go home, they ask why she has not come over.”

My mom looked a bit proud, but still found a way to insult me. “Xiaoyu only has her looks going for her. That’s what adults like.”

My dear mom, can you not give a proper compliment?

Si Jingnian called Auntie Luo Lan to say she would not be home for lunch and that she would bring me for dinner.

During lunch, my mom began complimenting Si Jingnian for her appearance, her job, and her calm personality. At the same time, she made comparisons that clearly put me down.

I rolled my eyes the entire time.

Si Jingnian and I had only met in high school, but I had heard about her greatness from my mom since I was young. Her mom, Auntie Luo Lan, was my mom’s senior in high school.

Back in those days, Auntie Luo Lan was probably like Si Jingnian, a school beauty who was gentle, elegant, and graceful.

Even though they had not interacted much over the years, my mom always heard about how amazing Si Jingnian was. She inherited great genes and was even more outstanding than her mother.

Si Jingnian had always been that perfect child my mom liked to compare me to.

When we ended up in the same high school class, my mom got even more excited.

When we became friends, my mom wanted to shout it from the rooftops.

In college, we became best friends. When Si Jingnian was about to study abroad, my mom actually blamed me for not treating her well enough and claimed that was why she was leaving.

I was completely confused at the time.

After we became roommates, my mom told me to take good care of her. But honestly, it was more like she was taking care of me.

While chatting, my mom eventually asked about Si Jingnian and Yu’an’s relationship.

Si Jingnian said it was going well, and they were taking it slowly.

My mom nodded, then added, “Taking it slow is good. That way you can really get to know each other. Avoid ending up like Xiaoyu and Zhengyu.”

My hand froze mid-air while reaching for a sweet and sour rib.

It had been a long time since I heard that name. Hearing it again felt like something from a past life, even though it had only been two months.

Sensing the awkward silence, my mom stopped talking.

My dad stepped in to smooth things over.

“No need to bring up unhappy things. We just want Xiaoyu and Jingnian to be happy.”

After lunch, Si Jingnian took a nap at our place.

The guest room had not been tidied up, so we ended up sharing my bed.

It was a narrow single bed, only 1.2 meters wide. Though we kept a distance, my heart was racing. I lay there with my eyes closed, pretending to sleep.

I woke up sharply at 2 p.m. when the alarm rang, completely alert.

Back then, I did not know that Si Jingnian had been awake the whole time too.

At 2:30 p.m., we set off for her house.

As I said, her place was about an hour away by car if there was no traffic.

On the way, we stopped to buy some gifts for her parents and grabbed a famous street snack from Liushi.

I had eaten it since I was a child. It still tasted nostalgic.

We arrived at her home around 4 p.m.

Her father was not at home because he was still working at the company. As the person in charge of a business, he often worked on weekends.

Auntie Luo Lan was sitting under a patio umbrella in the garden, having afternoon tea.

She saw us and waved us over without getting up.

We sat down beside her.

She poured us each a cup of black tea from a porcelain teapot.

I thanked her.

She smiled at me with her eyes squinting from joy. Her skin was fair, her eyes deep-set, and fine lines framed her eyes, enhancing her elegance.

Upon closer look, she and Si Jingnian shared similar facial features. However, their contrasting temperaments made this resemblance less noticeable at first. Both of them were beautiful in their own distinct ways.

She did not ask about romantic matters. Instead, she asked how our trip to Japan went, where we visited, and if there were any places we particularly recommended so she could go herself one day.

So I started recounting our itinerary.

When I mentioned our first night at the bar, I hesitated. She asked what was wrong.

I looked at Si Jingnian. She nodded.

I took a deep breath and blurted out, “It was a lesbian bar.”

Auntie Luo Lan looked surprised, but not disgusted. Her gaze turned curious, excited, maybe even a bit pleased?

I must have imagined that.

“Oh? Jingnian actually went to a lesbian bar? So, how was it?” She stared at her daughter. The two of them exchanged a look I could not interpret.

Hearing her ask that made me relax. She really was a progressive woman.

“It was fine, just a bit noisy.”

“Were the girls good-looking?”

“Yes, very fashionable.”

“Xiaoyu, did anyone try to hit on you?”

“No, but several girls tried to hit on Jingnian. One of them had an amazing body!”

“Really?” She raised her eyebrows at Jingnian, who looked away toward the flowers in the garden.

“Was her figure better than yours, Xiaoyu?” She smiled at me in a way that really resembled Si Jingnian.

“Definitely better than mine, Auntie. I do not have a great figure. But no matter how good hers was, it was nothing compared to yours.” I smiled sweetly, delivering a rainbow-level compliment.

She laughed heartily and said to her daughter, “Xiaoyu is so lovable. Jingnian, I really wish she were my daughter-in-law.”

“Xiaoyu, would you like to be Auntie’s daughter-in-law?”

She was clearly joking, so I smiled and was about to answer.

But Si Jingnian interrupted, “No.”

Her interruption was abrupt. If someone unfamiliar had been there, it would have been awkward but we both knew her well.

We let it pass and moved on.

“Xiaoyu, you can take your time with relationships. I hope you find someone who truly loves you.” Auntie Luo Lan took my hand, then pulled Si Jingnian’s hand over and placed them together.

“I hope you and Jingnian can cherish each other and be happy for the rest of your lives.”

Her sincerity and warmth almost brought me to tears.

Si Jingnian also softly replied, “Mm.”

The topic ended there.

During dinner, her father came home. He was a kind man and seemed very serious about work.

Dinner was pleasant. Auntie Luo Lan invited me to stay the night.

I said I would only be back for two days and would get scolded by my mom if I did not stay with her.

She let me go and asked Si Jingnian to drive me home.

I said I could just take a cab, but she said it was not safe. She added that Si Jingnian could drive back or stay at my place if it was too late.

No way. If she stayed over, I probably would not sleep well that night.
