The atmosphere in the living room was a bit strange, something Nan Deng failed to notice.

The ghost in the ceramic jar had been devoured before it could show itself, the subtle trace of its presence fading instantaneously as if nothing happened.

Once the rabbit head was sure Lian Yi wouldn’t do anything to it, it retracted its gaze. It smelled around Nan Deng’s feet and noticed that the earth spirits had just been here.

Then, it casually hopped away to chew on some potted plant leaves on the other side of the room.

“Don’t wander off next time,” Lian Yi was still comforting Nan Deng, “It’s unsafe outside.”

Nan Deng felt a bit terrified in retrospect. His phasing ability suddenly stopped working, and all doors and windows were closed, what if there happened to be a Celestial Master passing outside…

He clung to Lian Yi, only managing to mumble a response before looking up again.

“I…” Nan Deng spoke shyly, “I think I’m hungry.”

He had only announced that he wasn’t hungry earlier in the evening, but now he was retracting his declaration.

He wanted to try and restrain himself, but the scent of Lian Yi right next to him, emitting a sweet aroma, was too tempting.

Lian Yi didn’t agree immediately: “Hungry yet you still wander off?”

Nan Deng muttered a refutation, “It’s because you didn’t let me stay in the bathroom…”

The meaning behind these words suggests that it was Lian Yi’s dismissal that led him to leave.

Unable to muster up any anger, Lian Yi softly said, “In the future, you can’t just go into the bathroom as you wish.”

Nan Deng enjoyed being close to him and didn’t know the boundaries.

Despite letting it slide before, if he wished to keep him around for long, even if he was a ghost, he would need to be taught some manners.

Nan Deng obeyed, “Oh…” He didn’t ask why. After watching so much television, he had a rough idea of what was the reason.

“Alright,” Lian Yi gestured for Nan Deng to let him go, “Wait for me in the bedroom.”

This mostly meant that he was agreeing to allow Nan Deng to feed, whose eyes were now gleaming, obediently bobbing his head in understanding.

Once Nan Deng left, only Lian Yi and the rabbit head remained in the living room.

Lian Yi secured the doors and windows, setting up an array outside the house with his spiritual arts.

The appearance of the array was noiseless, invisible to the naked eye.

He moved to the couch where the rabbit head was gnawing on a plant in the corner, the majority of the greenery having already been ravaged by it.

Lian Yi raised his hand, his spiritual arts reaching out to grab the rabbit head’s ears, bringing it close to him.

The rabbit head hung in the air, a leaf still lingering by its mouth.

In a hushed voice, Lian Yi asked, “What in the world are you?”

The aura around the rabbit head was even lighter than Nan Deng’s. It was the weakest type of spiritual entity, similar yet unlike a ghost, fond of eating paper humans amongst other odd things.

He hadn’t paid much attention to the rabbit head before, nor did he care to. The paper humans he deliberately prepared was actually intended for Nan Deng.

However, such a peculiar and weak creature had somehow managed to devour all the level three vengeful spirits.

Although uncommon, it’s not unheard of for ghosts to eat other ghosts. The true anomaly was that the rabbit head could bite open a ceramic jar sealed with an amulet without being hurt.

Nan Deng once mentioned that the rabbit head had always been with him in the tower.

In fact, there were many oddities about Nan Deng too. He was completely different from the typical specter.

The sudden collapse of the Ye Zhang Tower, and these two very unique spiritual entities.

Or perhaps he was overthinking things. The ceramic jar incident could have been an accident, and maybe the rabbit head eats just about anything.

As more time passed with the rabbit head being held up, it started to grow annoyed, its pitch-black pupils beginning to turn red.

At this point, Lian Yi released the spiritual arts restraining it.

The rabbit head did a mid-air flip before landing steadily on the armrest of the couch.

Lian Yi looked down at it from his higher position. After a moment, he turned and headed back to his bedroom.

He guessed that Nan Deng probably didn’t know anything, merely guessing that the rabbit head was just a gluttonous pet.

If it had been any other Celestial Master, they would have certainly captured both the rabbit head and Nan Deng to thoroughly examine their origins.

But Lian Yi didn’t care to do so. They were just a few resentful spirits; it didn’t matter if they were eaten.

In some time, he might no longer be in the position of a Celestial Master.

As Lian Yi returned to his room, Nan Deng, hearing his footsteps, opened the door before him.

He looked weaker than he did in the daytime, his face somewhat pale, his eyes filled with eager anticipation making him appear extra pitiful.

Lian Yi reached out his hand, and Nan Deng immediately leaped into his embrace.

“Could you let me take a bite?” Nan Deng asked, his hair brushing Lian Yi’s chin, bringing a slight chill, “Just one.”

Lian Yi closed the bedroom door and dimmed the lights to their lowest setting. “Alright.”

He sat at the edge of the bed, and almost immediately, Nan Deng bit into him.

The familiar sweet taste spread through Nan Deng’s body, finally satisfying his hunger.

It was supposed to be only one bite, but he couldn’t help but savor the taste, licking his lips and a small patch of Lian Yi’s skin on his neck, cleaning up whatever he might have accidentally spilled.

It was as if Lian Yi felt something, the ear on that side gradually turning red.

By now, Nan Deng’s spirit had recovered significantly, his semi-transparent soul seemingly becoming more solid, and his silky hair even blacker.

Not wanting to part from the warm embrace, Nan Deng hugged Lian Yi tighter, whispering, “Thank you…”

Recalling lines he had heard from television, he said earnestly, “If you have anything you need help with in the future, I’m here.”

“You don’t need to help,” Lian Yi replied, his eyes half-closed, “Just stay with me.”

His voice was faint, as if it was just a casual remark.

Nan Deng paused for a moment, his beautiful eyes gazing at Lian Yi quietly.

Lian Yi tilted his head to meet Nan Deng’s gaze, asking, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing much,” came Nan Deng’s response as he hugged Lian Yi even tighter.

He suddenly realized that Lian Yi lived all by himself in this remote countryside, with no family or friends ever visiting.

Even with the severe injury on his hand, he could only apply medicine and bandage it up by himself.

At least during Nan Deng’s time locked in the tower, he had the rabbit head keeping him company.

Feeling a sense of heartache, Nan Deng leaned his head against Lian Yi’s shoulder, “Are you sleepy? Shall I keep you company as you sleep?”

Lian Yi hesitated for a moment before agreeing, “Alright.”

Unbeknownst to them, the bedroom door had been locked at some point. As the rabbit head approached it, muffled sounds of adjusting blankets could be heard from within.

It rammed the door, but there was no response. So, it turned away and left.

The dim, yellow light cast a faint glow inside the room as Lian Yi lay down to sleep.

Nan Deng sprawled out beside him on the bed, resting his head on his arms, and watched Lian Yi’s peaceful sleeping face.

His spirit form had no weight, so it didn’t press down on or disturb the blankets, allowing Lian Yi to see him as soon as he opened his eyes.

In this regard, Nan Deng was indeed the perfect companion.

Once Lian Yi’s breathing had stabilized, Nan Deng quietly slipped into the living room to check on things. He reminded the rabbit head to stay put and not cause any mischief before heading back to the bedroom and turning out the light.

He climbed into bed in the darkness, lying down next to Lian Yi.

At dawn, when Lian Yi woke up, Nan Deng was still fast asleep.

Tilting his body towards him, Nan Deng hugged Lian Yi in a rather intimate gesture.

Lian Yi didn’t try to wake him up. Instead, he used his spiritual arts to brush away the loose hair from Nan Deng’s cheek.

Overnight, the living soul that Nan Deng had consumed was absorbed again, making his clothes look newer than before, and his previously unruly collar was neat and smooth.

His skin was fair and his slightly parted lips were red and vibrant, his long eyelashes clearly noticeable.

The curtains blocked the sunlight, and in the dim light, Lian Yi could almost believe that Nan Deng was no longer a ghost-like spirit, but rather a living, breathing person.

Lian Yi stared at him for a while before reaching out, tentatively touching the side of Nan Deng’s face.

Nan Deng seemed to feel his warmth, stirring slightly before waking up.

With a rub of his eyes, Nan Deng sat up, “You’re awake?”

Nan Deng didn’t intend to sleep the previous night. He had bitten into Lian Yi and as late night fell, he became increasingly drowsy. Eventually, he didn’t even remember falling asleep.

Lian Yi responded with a hum, pushing back the covers, and getting up from the bed.

Yawning widely, Nan Deng followed him closely, not accompanying him only when he went into the bathroom to freshen up and change his clothes, squatting outside the door to wait.

“Ding——”

A sound came from the study. Nan Deng tilted his head to listen carefully; it seemed to be a cell phone notification sound.

The bathroom door opened immediately. Lian Yi looked at Nan Deng squatting by the door, “Go back to sleep for a while.”

Nan Deng was indeed still sleepy. He went to the living room and found the rabbit head sleeping on the couch, bringing it back to the bedroom with him.

Lian Yi entered the study by himself, opening a sealed drawer.

The communicator used between Celestial Masters was inside, it had just received a message.

“Chief Lian, Elder Gu Xu has just arrived.”

It was sent by Lin Jiu. Lian Yi did not reply, he was about to put the communicator back when another message came in.

“Chief Lian, Elder Gu Xu inquired about your recent situation.”

Lin Jiu, whose rank was lower than Lian Yi, was a bit hesitant to speak out directly. His message was very roundabout.

His inquiry about Lian Yi’s well-being was clearly an excuse to call him over.

Lian Yi showed no expression, but a touch of impatience was visible in his eyes.

He opened the reply interface and sent back a brief message.

“Busy at the moment, will check in later.”

Lian Yi’s reply was swift, catching Lin Jiu off guard. Upon reading the message, Lin Jiu’s face turned stiff.

Gu Xu, who was standing beside Lin Jiu, noticed his awkwardness, and without asking, he guessed the reason.

He didn’t seem the least bit surprised. Sneering, he said, “I wonder how long his arrogance will last. We’ll see if he doesn’t come begging to us when the time comes…”

Gu Xu didn’t continue his sentence, shifting the topic instead, “I heard there were sightings of the Mountain God in this area?”

Lin Jiu replied, “The newly born earth spirit has a high probability of coming into contact with the Mountain God. But… we haven’t been able to establish successful communication with it yet…”

“That’s equivalent to not having any solid evidence,” Gu Xu interrupted him, “What about the Ghost King?”

Ong Ping Ran hadn’t arrived yet, and Gu Xu might not have known about the situation Lin Jiu had reported earlier.

The elders had different temperaments and styles; Lin Jiu respectfully relayed the instances of the Ghost King’s sightings and escapes.

Gu Xu frowned deeply, “Why can’t anything be done right?”

Communication with the earth’s spirit hadn’t advanced, and there were no traces of the Ghost King and the Mountain God.

Lin Jiu bowed his head without answering, and Gu Xu waved his hand to dismiss him, “Never mind, go about your business.”

After Lin Jiu left his shop, Gu Xu pulled out a compass from his pocket.

The compass was entirely black with a special material, the needle moving slowly before finally settling in one direction.

Holding the compass tightly, Gu Xu wore a serious expression, “Zhuo Qing’s soul is indeed here.”

He had been mentally prepared. If Zhuo Qing had been missing for such a long time, there was no possibility of him still being alive.

A Celestial Master approached from behind, speaking in a low voice, “Elder, should we make a move against Lian Yi?”

“We can’t act rashly,” Gu Xu pondered, “This direction… is it where Lian Yi lives?”

The Celestial Master behind him replied, “Yes.”

“He must either have Zhuo Qing’s soul on him or it’s hidden at his residence.”

Gu Xu put away the compass, his eyes revealing a ruthless look, “Let’s find an excuse to lure him out first.”

Even if they couldn’t find one, they would use the opportunity to plant something in his residence and frame him.

Translator Footnotes:

I really wanna know what Xiao Tu is, I don’t think it is the Ghost King after he bites the paper the ghosts can get hurt if in contact. And, I need to say… Those Celestial Masters are a bunch of hypocrites. Is it okay for the old man to try to kill Lian Yi, but it’s not okay for Lian Yi to kill the old man? Hypocrites!
