On the tree-lined path on the way home, Gu Fei walked in front kicking stones, and Gu Qingqing followed quietly behind.

Gu Fei suddenly turned around and asked, “Gu Qingqing, how much of that conversation between me and Chen Xiaoxian did you hear?”

Gu Qingqing was silent for two seconds, “…when Chen Xiaoxian arrived at your classroom, I just happened to come down from upstairs.”

In other words, she almost heard everything.

“That…Gu Qingqing…” Gu Fei scratched her head uncomfortably, “Don’t take Chen Xiaoxian’s words to heart. She…isn’t in her right mind.”

Gu Qingqing took a step forward and pulled her sleeve, “Yeah, you too, don’t take it to heart.”

Guo Fei turned her head away, gazing toward the distant silhouettes, and said softly, “When we were kids, Chen Xiaoxian and I never got along. Every time we were together, we ended up arguing. But as we grew older, I realized her family didn’t treat her well, she was always the one being ignored, the youngest daughter nobody paid attention to. I thought she was pitiful, so I used to pull her along to play with me…though she still found me annoying back then.”

“And then…” Gu Qingqing blinked.

“Later on, we both went through our differentiation. Didn’t I tell you before about that time I saved an omega classmate who had just differentiated on the street? That person was her.” Guo Fei continued, shaking her head, “Ever since then, she started liking me. But honestly, I don’t, not even a little bit, like her back.”

Rather, it’s annoying as hell.

“Yeah.” Gu Qingqing lowered her head, with an inexplicable glimmer in her eyes. Her fingers groped along the cuffs of Gu Fei and finally clasped her wrist.

Gu Fei continued gazing into the distance. She was almost always the one to take Gu Qingqing’s hand first, so whenever Gu Qingqing took the initiative to get close, she’d feel oddly unaccustomed to it. But now, feeling the soft touch on her wrist, Gu Fei merely pursed her lips slightly, and didn’t pull away.

…

…

After dinner, Gu Fei went back to her room and took a shower.

Gu Fei was soaking in the steaming water when she suddenly felt dizzy and her body became a little weak.

“Hmm…” Gu Fei stretched in the water, took a deep breath, and suddenly felt the bathroom filled with the smell of her own pheromones.

She blinked in a daze, then suddenly came to her senses——she realized that her rut had likely arrived. After differentiation, Alphas typically experience a susceptible period about three to four times a year, each lasting around three days.

During the susceptible period, the underage alpha cannot control the changes in pheromones in the body, and will be abnormally irritable and painful, with pheromones constantly leaking out. During this period, they must be isolated at home. However, after reaching adulthood, as long as the Alpha was not drunk or ill when their rut begins, their mind remains clear and they can control their pheromone release, though their body may still experience mild discomfort.

With the comfort of omega pheromones, the physical discomfort will soon dissipate. Even without an omega…most adult alphas can survive the susceptible period.

This was the first rut Gu Fei had experienced since becoming an adult. She scratched the slightly itchy back of her neck and yawned while leaning back in the bathtub. Aside from her glands itching a little, her body feeling a bit tired, and her head being slightly groggy, there didn’t seem to be much else going on. Compared to her pre-adult ruts, this one felt a lot more bearable.

Gu Fei looked at the time. It was half past seven. She and Gu Qingqing had made an appointment to go to Gu Qingqing’s room to help her with homework at eight o’clock. Gu Fei soaked in the water for a while before dragging her limp body out of the bathtub, changing into pajamas and drying her hair.

Before leaving with the book in her arms, Gu Fei somewhat went back to the closet and took out a short-sleeved jacket to wear over her pajamas. Then Gu Fei stopped in front of the bedside table, hesitated for a few seconds, and took out the barrier patch.

Although Gu Fei could control the release of her pheromones, and even if she couldn’t, Gu Qingqing wouldn’t be able to sense them at all, still Gu Fei subconsciously felt it was better to cover her gland with a barrier patch.

Gu Fei couldn’t see the back of her neck, and because she was groggy during her rut, she pasted it crookedly several times. A few minutes after eight, there was a faint knock on the door, and Gu Fei said casually, “Come in!”

Gu Qingqing pushed the door open and weakly peeked in from outside, “Gu Fei…? Did something happen to you?”

“It’s nothing,” Gu Fei waved her over, “I think my susceptibility period just started. Perfect timing, help me put on a barrier patch.”

“Susceptibility period? Are you sure you’re okay?” Gu Qingqing asked with concern, “Maybe I should just study on my own today, it’s fine if we postpone for a few days.”

“It’s fine, I’m already an adult, it doesn’t feel too bad!” Gu Fei leaned over the desk, brushed her hair aside, and pointed at the barrier patch on the table, “Just stick it on and it’ll be okay.”

Gu Fei shook her head slightly, as if urging her to hurry up.

Gu Qingqing carefully walked over, peeled open the barrier patch according to the instructions, and looked at the back of Gu Fei’s neck. Sure enough, it was different from usual. During an Alpha’s rut, the gland was unusually prominent, a small red bump slightly raised, and the surrounding area was flushed, looking a bit like the marks left by an allergic reaction.

Gu Qingqing moved closer with the barrier patch and could even feel the heat radiating from around the gland.

It was a little hot.

Gu Fei must be feeling very uncomfortable right now, right? Like the “low-grade fever” described in the Physiology book? Only Omega pheromones can soothe her? When Gu Qingqing was about to put the barrier patch on, she suddenly became a little dazed.

“Gu Qingqing?” Gu Fei turned around and urged her, her voice sounding a little aggrieved, as if she was not feeling well.

Gu Qingqing came to her senses and immediately put the barrier patch back on.

“Hiss……”

As soon as the cool barrier patch touched her gland, the itch at the back of Gu Fei’s neck immediately worsened, and the area even stung a little. She had almost forgotten…using a barrier patch during the susceptible period, made the gland feel uncomfortable!

But she was already an adult Alpha, she! can! endure!

Gu Qingqing heard the sound of her cramping in pain and subconsciously tried to take off the barrier patch, but Gu Fei instinctively grabbed her wrist.

Gu Fei gritted her teeth and said word by word, “It. Doesn’t. Matter. I. Can. Bear it.”

Perhaps because of the pheromones, Gu Fei held Gu Qingqing’s wrist with great force, and her fingers were also very hot.

“Is it really okay?” Gu Qingqing bent down with concern, frowning.

Gu Fei bared her teeth in pain and buried her head in the crook of her arm. After a few seconds of enduring it, the sting finally began to fade. The warmth in her grip on Gu Qingqing’s fingers gradually cooled until it returned to normal, and her fingers slowly loosened.

Gu Qingqing breathed a sigh of relief only after making sure that Gu Fei was not really feeling very uncomfortable.

Gu Fei stretched lazily, her eyebrows curved, “Let’s go, let’s go study.”

“Mm.” Gu Qingqing turned around and glanced at her own wrist from an angle Gu Fei couldn’t see. Her skin was delicate, back when she worked odd jobs or did farm work, it often got marked up, though the traces would fade quickly. Just now, Gu Fei had gripped her wrist tightly, leaving a ring of red marks. It didn’t hurt, but it looked a little frightening.

Gu Qingqing lowered her eyes, licked her lips, and hid her wrists in her sleeves without leaving a trace.

…

…

Gu Fei and Gu Qingqing sat side by side at the desk, textbooks and worksheets spread out before them, along with a schedule handwritten by Gu Fei herself. The warm yellow desk lamp was on, casting a cozy and inviting glow over the scene.

Gu Fei sat up straight and spoke with a serious tone: “Today is Friday. According to our plan, the subject we need to review is Biology. Your previous school used Senior High Biology textbooks, but our school follows General Biology (Note 1), and most of the exam questions are selected from competition-style problems in that book. So today, we’ll start with the first and second sections of the General Biology textbook, then you’ll try doing the exercises for those two sections, and then…”

Gu Fei opened the textbook and carefully highlighted and explained key points with a highlighter. Gu Qingqing leaned in closer, occasionally nodding. By the time Gu Fei had finished explaining the first two sections in full concentration, she suddenly realized their heads had unknowingly drawn very close together, so close that their breaths were filled with each other’s soft scent.

Gu Fei’s fingers holding the pen stiffened slightly, and she slowly shifted away a little, “There, I’ve finished explaining. Is there anything you don’t understand?”

“No.” Gu Qingqing shook her head.

“Then take a ten-minute break… I’ll mark some questions in the workbook for you. Once I’m done, you can start working on them. How does that sound?” Gu Fei asked.

“Okay.” Gu Qingqing said softly and meekly, “I’ll listen to you, Gu Fei.”

Gu Fei lifted her chin proudly, floating a little on the inside as she focused on selecting questions for Gu Qingqing. Once she finished marking them all, she finally noticed that Gu Qingqing was sitting beside her, resting her chin on one hand, lips slightly curved in a soft smile as she watched her quietly.

Gu Qingqing’s eyes were focused, and the smile in them was obvious, as if…she had been looking at her like this during the few minutes when Gu Fei was asking questions. Gu Fei pouted uncomfortably and muttered in a low voice, “Why are you peeking at me?”

Gu Qingqing was not at all embarrassed about being caught. Instead, she blinked innocently and said in a very light but matter-of-fact voice, “Because I found that you are very good-looking, Gu Fei.”
