Chapter 7: I Really Want a Pet

Cao Weidong’s home was filled with corpses.

Not human corpses, but those of various small animals—or rather, specimens.

They were sealed on walls, in cabinets, on tables, and on the floor—everywhere visible to the naked eye were animal remains.

These specimens weren’t entirely the original animals; they were more like several corpses shattered and stitched together into bizarre creatures. At first glance, they appeared recognizable as certain beings, but upon closer inspection, they were completely unnatural.

For instance, lying on the floor near the entrance was a specimen resembling both a cat and a dog, yet stitched with a chicken’s beak and a rat’s tail, looking utterly grotesque.

As Xu Jiu’s gaze shifted upward, the sight on the ceiling shocked him far more than the floor specimens.

He froze, his widened eyes trembling with terror.

Everywhere Xu Jiu could see, surveillance cameras were mounted. No matter where he moved, he felt intensely watched, completely exposed.

The black lenses of the cameras forcibly drew Xu Jiu’s attention.

In that moment, he suddenly realized what Cao Weidong’s eyes resembled—they were exactly like the black camera lenses on the surveillance devices.

Xu Jiu’s steps grew heavy. He wanted to flee but found himself drained of blood and vitality, like the specimens on the floor, sustained only by a skeletal frame struggling to maintain balance.

When his body regained awareness, he stepped backward and collided squarely with Cao Weidong.

That warm wall seemed to absorb all warmth from Xu Jiu, raising goosebumps instantly across his back.

Xu Jiu turned his head slowly, inch by inch.

Cao Weidong blocked the doorway. The trash bag was gone, replaced by a blood-stained hammer in his hand.

Xu Jiu was certain the red liquid on the hammer was blood—he could smell the putrid stench of decay.

Cao Weidong raised his hand, lifting the hammer along with it.

Xu Jiu instinctively shrunk his neck, but then stubbornly thrust himself toward the hammer, glaring fiercely at Cao Weidong as if trying to tear into those deathly eyes with his gaze.

I saw everything. I know it all, Xu Jiu raised his eyebrows, baring his canine teeth in a provocative smile.

Cao Weidong kept one hand behind his back, instinctively wanting to lock the closed door.

His hand lingered on the latch for a long time, but after a struggle, he finally took a deep breath and withdrew it.

Ignoring Xu Jiu, Cao Weidong walked past him, placed the raised hammer on a cabinet, and picked up a fallen specimen animal.

Xu Jiu pursued him, chattering incessantly like a sparrow: Aren’t you afraid I’ll go out and tell everyone? That you’re a pervert who tortures animals? Or do you actually want people to discover this side of you? Did you lure me here just to scare me? Well, I won’t be frightened.

Cao Weidong paused briefly, and Xu Jiu halted too.

Rubbing his earlobe, Cao Weidong suddenly grabbed Xu Jiu’s shoulder, dragged him to the metal door, and shoved him out—as effortlessly as tossing a bag of trash.

Xu Jiu landed sitting outside, his tailbone tingling.

Bang—

Cao Weidong’s metal door slammed shut right before Xu Jiu’s eyes.

Xu Jiu went to knock on the door, but there was no response. The iron door felt cold and unfeeling, much like Cao Weidong himself.

Cao Weidong sat at his workbench, continuing to complete an unfinished specimen. The red on the hammer was paint, and the objects in the black bag were specimens he had smashed after deeming them unsatisfactory. If intact specimens were discarded, they would frighten people.

Cao Weidong wasn’t unaware that Xu Jiu was following him. After all, the person hadn’t even changed his hat or mask, with his tall and slender figure and strands of pink hair escaping from the edges of his cap—it was hard not to notice.

But what Cao Weidong hadn’t expected was that Xu Jiu would dare to barge in.

Even more surprising to Cao Weidong was that Xu Jiu showed no fear and instead followed him deeper inside, chattering incessantly behind him, much like… keeping a pet.

Cao Weidong didn’t pay attention to what Xu Jiu was saying, but it sounded to his ears like barks and meows, as if welcoming him home.

Quite cute, completely harmless.

As Cao Weidong thought about Xu Jiu, his movements became clumsy. His hand paused while fixing the skeleton, and the specimen broke.

Cao Weidong’s patience was thin today. He picked up the hammer and smashed it—another pile of powder, which he swept into the black bag with a brush of his hand.

Picking up a poorly assembled specimen from the floor, Cao Weidong slowly and gently stroked it.

Cao Weidong loved his specimens. They were all dead animals he had collected from outside, revived and reassembled by his hands into versions of themselves that no longer resembled their original forms.

It was as if Cao Weidong had granted these creatures a second life, yet he had also turned them into the monsters he desired.

This gave him an extreme sense of satisfaction—everything firmly under his control.

Whether it was skinning, deboning, and reshaping bodies, or forcibly assembling unrelated parts together, the dead objects in his hands never resisted or opposed.

Everything was entirely at Cao Weidong’s mercy.

He loved this feeling of control.

But as Cao Weidong caressed the dead object in his hand, an image of a person uncontrollably surfaced in his mind.

A terrifying thought arose, and Cao Weidong’s breath caught. His hand on the table clenched tightly into a fist, desperately suppressing that horrifying notion.

Yet that image kept jumping around like a flickering flame, emitting annoying crackling sounds.

It threatened to scorch his desolate black wasteland until nothing remained.

Cao Weidong’s hand slammed violently on the table, like a drowning person struggling to lift their head from water, forcing his eyes wide open.

At the same moment, abrupt, urgent knocking sounded at the door.

Thud—

Thud thud—

Rubbing his temples wearily, Cao Weidong set the specimen aside and went to open the door.

The iron door opened just a crack, preventing the outsider from seeing inside clearly. Through the dim yellow light from the room, only one gloomy eye was visible through the gap.

Xiao Cao, you’re two months behind on rent. When are you going to pay?

It was the landlord.

Cao Weidong frowned. He felt somewhat disappointed but quickly regained his composure.

Uncle, the year-end scholarship will be issued soon.

Having received a response, the landlord didn’t press further and gave him a final deadline: Sigh… I’ll give you one more month then, considering how well you’re doing in your studies.

Cao Weidong said, Thank you, Uncle.

The landlord wasn’t in a hurry to leave. Instead, he pulled out a handsome young man from behind him. Xiao Cao, this is your classmate, right? I heard him say you owe him twenty thousand and have been hiding from him. That’s not very good, is it?

Xu Jiu hid behind the landlord, snickering mischievously. His fluffy pink hair fluttered like dandelion fluff in the wind, and his sharp canine teeth pressed against the tip of his pink tongue that peeked out.

Echoing the landlord’s words, Xu Jiu put his hands on his hips and laughed arrogantly, shouting: Yeah, that’s right! You owe me twenty thousand! You’ve been hiding from me for two months, and now that I’ve finally found you, you’re so guilty you shut me out. Nobody earns twenty thousand easily – what you’re doing isn’t borrowing money, it’s scamming!

A few neighbors who happened to be returning from walks nearby stopped upon hearing Xu Jiu’s clear, loud voice, all turning their gaze toward Cao Weidong’s iron door.

Let me in, Xu Jiu commanded.

Through the narrow door crack, Cao Weidong shot Xu Jiu a dangerous look. Are you sure?

What’s there to be unsure about? Xu Jiu brashly squeezed through the door crack on his own.

As he brushed past Cao Weidong’s side, Xu Jiu faintly heard a vague whisper by his ear.

Don’t regret it.

————————

Baby, you’re a very foolish and wicked baby, but your face gives your wickedness a unique flavor.
