Chapter 5: Going to Die
Xu Jiu was dragged deeper into the darkness by those hands. Only then did he realize that in his haste to follow, he hadn’t noticed the narrow branching path in this alley – barely wide enough for two people to stand.
With his back to the person in the shadows, Xu Jiu felt somewhat uneasy.
He hoped this person was Cao Weidong, not someone else.
Following me.
It was Cao Weidong’s voice, emotionlessly calm, a statement rather than a question.
Xu Jiu breathed a sigh of relief, feeling secretly pleased that he hadn’t lost his target during his first nighttime pursuit.
That Cao Weidong would initiate conversation surprised Xu Jiu somewhat.
Cao Weidong pulled off his hat, releasing a puff of recently dyed pink hair from beneath it.
Xu Jiu wanted to turn around and introduce himself, but Cao Weidong pressed down on his shoulders, keeping him immobile. He could only remain with his back to Cao Weidong, trying to gauge his current mood through the pressure of the hands on his shoulders.
Someone whose eyes revealed no emotion was unexpectedly easy to read through physical strength.
For instance, Xu Jiu could now confidently determine that Cao Weidong was restraining some impulse – his fingers were trembling intensely, yet his palms remained perfectly steady.
Clearly holding back.
What impulse could it be? The impulse to hit him, Xu Jiu thought, pleased that his efforts to provoke hostility were finally paying off.
Xu Jiu asked him: Do you still remember me?
Cao Weidong didn’t answer his question.
You’ve forgotten me already?
Xu Jiu grew somewhat irritated, thinking to himself that despite bothering him daily, he could still be forgotten.
The hands on his shoulders loosened their grip, pushing him outward toward where the alley mouth’s light could reach.
Go home. Cao Weidong said coldly before turning to leave.
Xu Jiu stumbled forward, quickly turning around and hurriedly following Cao Weidong’s footsteps.
He hadn’t finished what he wanted to say.
Xu Jiu suddenly surged forward, pushing Cao Weidong and grabbing his collar to slam him against the wall.
Finally, after two months, Xu Jiu saw those eyes again.
Cao Weidong had followed his advice and shaved his head, making those sinister eyes strike Xu Jiu’s vision even more starkly.
Xu Jiu had never imagined that someone’s eyes could be described as deathly still – so dark they resembled a fogbank, devoid of emotion, devoid of focus.
Only when Xu Jiu forcibly made eye contact did those cold eyes finally show some vitality, though it merely added a strange pink hue.
My name is Xu Jiu – Jiu as in entanglement.
Cao Weidong looked at him, eyelids twitching, his hanging hands mirroring the movement.
Cao Weidong’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed.
Xu Jiu didn’t understand what this gesture meant.
But the next second, Cao Weidong helped Xu Jiu put on his hat and mask, then placed both broad hands on either side of Xu Jiu’s head. Gripping Xu Jiu before him, he leaned close to his ear through the hat and said:
No one lives in this area, no surveillance cameras. With yourself completely covered like this, no one has seen you.
Cao Weidong’s voice remained completely flat.
Xu Jiu didn’t sense the danger, instead finding it remarkable that Cao Weidong would speak so many words to him.
What do you mean?
A low chuckle sounded muffled near Xu Jiu’s ear: It means if I kill you now, no one would know.
The phrase no one would know carried multiple meanings.
No one would know someone died here, no one would know it was Xu Jiu who died, no one would know it was Cao Weidong who did it.
After speaking, Cao Weidong gave Xu Jiu no time to react.
The two large hands covering his head slid down swiftly, settling around Xu Jiu’s neck. The pressure tightened abruptly, gripping with deadly force.
The exposed section of Cao Weidong’s arm was covered in scars, veins bulging alongside the marks as his muscles tensed and swelled.
There was no emotion left in Cao Weidong’s eyes, his expression indifferent as if casually swatting a mosquito.
But when Xu Jiu threw his head back in agony, gasping desperately for air, Cao Weidong saw that beautiful face now distorted and crumbling under his control, suffocating in his grasp. He lost himself.
He fell completely into a momentary trance of loss of control. In that blink of an eye, Cao Weidong’s gaze held utter madness.
Xu Jiu couldn’t grasp the loss of control in Cao Weidong’s eyes, but Cao Weidong had completely imprisoned Xu Jiu’s dazed state within the dark cage—his own eyes.
Xu Jiu didn’t cry for help. He was already losing himself in the wild waves of pleasure.
Fortunately, Cao Weidong’s gaze was cold enough to finally drag Xu Jiu back from his delusion.
Instead of being frightened, Xu Jiu gripped Cao Weidong’s hands, his eyes reddening as he glared back, as if silently roaring: Just like this! Just like this! Just like this!
Xu Jiu’s mind had become a chaotic mess of colorful paste, boiling over a fire where scalding temperatures burned out countless brilliant hues.
Like an irregular nebula, massive celestial bodies were crushed and stuffed into Xu Jiu’s fragile consciousness. The expanding brilliance combined with the scorching heat nearly burst him apart.
His eyelids felt heavy, but his mind was wildly excited. Every cell in his body was impulsively screaming.
Suddenly, Cao Weidong’s hands loosened, giving Xu Jiu a chance to breathe.
Xu Jiu hung limp like a torn, hollowed ragdoll, dangling weakly from the hands around his neck.
His pink tongue swept across his lips, unconsciously making sounds of lingering desire.
But soon, Xu Jiu’s legs suddenly stiffened.
He had realized something utterly terrifying.
He had reacted to it.
Carefully, he struggled to lift his eyelids, his gaze tilting upward.
In his heart, he repeated countless times: Don’t notice… Don’t notice… Don’t notice…
